Jess. Last fall my husband tossed a bottleneck gourd in the edge of the woods after it started to decay. We were thrilled when it volunteered this spring as my husband passed away in late January. It was like a gift from him to our family. Thank you for sharing with us. We live in the mountains of northeast Georgia. Retired here ten years ago.

You'll be an old hat at dairy cows, soon! One piece of advice: TALK to the cow when you're getting ready to milk. Don't just suddenly put the cleaning rag/towel on her teats as that will make them jumpy. Run your hand down her leg while you talk to her, letting her know you're back there. She'll get in the habit of knowing you're going to touch her udder/teats if you do this every time and it will help keep her much calmer! Especially, for a new momma! (I used to milk on a 400 cow dairy) I guess a second piece: It takes 3-4 minutes for the milk to "let down"(the oxytocin hormone to kick in) completely. Get in a strict routine with her from the beginning, that lasts 3-5 minutes before you begin milking. The cleaning procedure should take at least 2 minutes. Pre-wipe of debris, cleaning with disinfectant/dip, leave it on the recommended amount of time to thoroughly clean, wipe, wipe again, always using clean section of towel. The teats need to be spotless before you milk, as bacteria can easily migrate up the teat canal during milking. After milking is a crucial time to keep those teats clean, not allowing them to lay down for a while! (many use a post-dip that temp seals the end of the teat for this reason) The canal remains open for some time, allowing bacteria up the teat into the udder, causing mastitis.

It was funny as she was talking about the "volunteers" in those wood chips, they were actually planted there but didn't grow well. So she thought they were not planned. :D It is great that they are living just two hours apart :) That must mean they are not too far away from the hollar's and Art and Bri etc too. I see a lot of collaborations in the future.

Actually, there were volunteers in that sacrifice area pointed out by Justin a few days ago. And no, it’s not “funny” that you thought it appropriate to comment like that. The point was volunteers. Probably over a million of us viewers of R&R and Justin Rhodes understood that Jess has been full on trying to move a farm and family for the past 8 months, and hasn’t had time to focus on other YTERS like you have. So no. It’s not funny at all. Have a fun week.

I thought it was neat to see someone thought "Ha! Those were planted, just in poor compacted soil, but look at them try! Bless their hearts!" like I did when I was watching too. I'm sure they love a good volunteer plant just as much as Jess does ♥

@@amandar7719 In no way did I mean to disrespect Jess? I'm sorry that you thought so and felt the need to defend her. She has a wealth of knowledge in gardening that I will never have. And she is far braver than I am moving a family/farm/business across a country to follow her dreams. But she would be the best person to understand trying something and it not working right in the first season (in this case because of compacted soil).

I got a Jersey heifer at 3 months. She was very tame and loved attention so I groomed her and made sure to touch and desensitize all the areas that would be touched while milking which paid off big time. She never kicked and as long as grain was in front of her, stood like a rock. I left her calf on her because I didn’t need all the milk and didn’t want to have to milk 2x a day. Good times ahead…I love cows!!

You will find your confidence with dairy cows in no time. 99% of the dairy cows I've know have been gentle, loving beasts. You are wise to respect their power and like Miah said be mindful of them, especially the bull. Thank you for sharing yourself and family. Loving watching your gratitude for your blessings.

Know exactly what volunteer plants are, I get flowers, lettuce and tomato 🍅 volunteers. Love it, and last year had a volunteer cherry tomato 🍅 and lettuce in the same container, and I have never planted cherry tomatoes, so.... guess the world is good to me, and I am grateful 🙏

The videos of you at the "Holler" are my absolute favorites! I have learned so much from you and to see you with your mentor just settles right into the best place with me. I love both of ya'lls channels. I have been learning a lot from him now as well. But you will always be my favorite. I got myself a new home Church. Now I can get back to where I need to be. My relationship with God has suffered and its all my fault. I already feel so much better and much more clear headed. Bless you all!

Jess, Biltmore is amazing and one of my daughters favorite places to head to. The conservatory and gardens will capture your attention I am sure. Biltmore makes so many things on the property that you can enjoy. Check out the square in Asheville, there are always some sort of thing going on there and loads of street musicians. The Asheville Nature center is really awesome and has a great pool. So many things to do in that area.

So nice to see you at Justin’s! Laughing, totally laughing at the “volunteers”. That’s his squash/melons bed he just called a fail the other day. They are struggling because there was too much fill dirt, I think left over from the pig yard build. Great volunteer discussion though. 💚💚💚

I wish I could give more than one thumbs up. I have been eating cherry tomatoes. I can collect the cherry tomato plants I want in the early COLD spring in my backyard. I wish all my garden plants grew every year as well as the wild cherry tomatoes I transplanted into 5-gallon buckets.

I was having a panic moment last week because I thought 'what if I have to go somewhere & leave my patio garden unattended and watered?' I'm the only gardener I know (our area has become so urban no one gardens anymore) my friends all think a garden is nuts and too much work. 😔 I'm still hopeful someone will come around to our way of thinking. In the meantime they get to enjoy the homegrown veggies. 🍅🥒

@@sandieweatherup isn’t it amazing how “people” think that gardens are a waste of time and why would you plant it when you can go and buy it from the grocery store. My response to them is well what if the grocery store doesn’t have any produce one day? They say oh well we will just have to start planting veggies. They say it like there is nothing to it! Not a thing to learn and you just pop a seed in the ground and add a little water and then the sun and rain takes care of the rest. Not!! With all their negative comments or slights indicating that we are less then because we are growing our own food. But then they sure have their hands open willing to accept our abundance. They don’t see any value in it and just think they are doing us a favour helping us use up our extras. Makes me angry but I just think maybe one day they will understand. They sure aren’t willing to help out when we aren’t home to do it ourselves. Funny thing is we do all of our gardening at the moment indoors hydroponically because we don’t have any outdoor space at all we live on the 34th floor. We went away for a couple of days and we left our grow lights off figured the plants would be fine with just the sun shining in. Well we come back two days later and I swear everything had gone crazy growing! Everything looked soooo happy and soooo full of amazing produce. It felt sooo awesome to get home to my veggies and I’m soooo thrilled I’m growing our own produce. I’m very lucky my family is very supportive and absolutely loves receiving our excess produce. I love sharing it because I know our produce is full of minerals and nutrients and soooo much fresher then anything they could get at the grocery store. Makes me so happy that the produce is nourishing their bodies as well as ours. It took a lot of learning, failures, perseverance and a heart that just knew this was the thing we really needed to learn and understand. 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦
