Your videos are the highlight of my day. I live alone and lost the love of my life in 2019. It got to the point that I didn't leave my house and layed in bed all day. You inspired me to get up and start a garden, you and sweet Miah brought joy back to my life through gardening. I only have a few plants and hope to find scraps to build some beds. I just wanted to sincerely say thank you for saving me. You have no idea the joy you inspire and bring to our lives.

My motto is "it will be there tomorrow". How long have you been pushing? The push to get ready to move, the actual move and now unboxing your life out of cardboard boxes. It really can be overwhelming, but it can be as simple as what can I do today (realistically). It is not a race. Savor the possibilities of your new blank canvas. Just dream girl!

Linda G- I am a 71 year old farm wife in New Hampshire. Over all , we "New Hampshirites" are in a good place this summer. Vermont is 85% vaccinated and we are right behind them! Our working farm continues to shelter in place and sadly, we are shut down to the public at this time. Only selling hay to our customers. But you can get gardening! 🌱 Like Jess and her famrily, the world is at you feet, if you choose to pick up what interests you. I bought art supplies and we bought a sweet tear drop camper to get out in the fresh air. I hope Jess inspires you to live a life that follows your passions. We are hard working farmers and ALL of us are over 70! Jess's journey is a tribute to the younger generation and what can be accomplished. ~ Diane

Along with a memory garden that he built for me when my father passed away. Plus I'm growing in a few huge pots and grow bags. It's really hard to grow anything here because the soil is mostly sand and bark-like pieces. I've purchased big bags of garden and potting soil to mix in with my soil. It gets so hot here too of course. We are in the desert after all. I'm growing tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, peppers (a couple different kinds), carrots, zucchini, a lot of herbs and flowers. @@amandaforgie8047 I completely agree :) And there's something comforting about having someone older than you acknowledge your abilities when you're young. Really gives you the confidence to have that learning mindset whenever you hit a wall. I hope to build a sort of mentor ship program, where both young and old can learn together. There's not a lot of spaces where both young and old can talk + socialize freely in my community, but I think gardening is definitely one of them.

For the dogs you might consider training them to recall with a whistle, they are both so clever and will pick it up especially if given a special tasty reward. The whistle I recommend is the acme 211.5 dog whistle (get a lanyard to keep it on when hiking with them or to hang near the door)…teach them to recall with two quick toots followed up by tasty reward. The whistle is high pitched and carries quite a distance, even though the dog can hear your voice and calls well from a distance the unique sound of a whistle associated with treats is more likely to bring to him home quicker.

@@RootsandRefugeFarm I was going to suggest same.... I would concentrate at least 10 minutes (time is valuable) with the dogs when there are no children around and use a dog whistle that you can temper the sound by screwing the top. Decide what the commands should be. I used one short blow as sit and be still and look at me (for hand signals/voice, like come here, lie down/stay), whatever you choose but don’t make it confusing. One long whistle , and I mean long, would mean I can’t find you but I’m coming, please stay where you are but please bark. Dunno, Jess. You’ve moved into a much larger property where your dogs and children are about to experience a more free environment. I taught my dog near and long distant hand and whistle commands because I needed to when riding on horseback. TBH, most well loved and trained dogs want to rely on new secure commands when they find themselves in a new, open environment that requires them to fulfill their natural protective role. When I took my dog (Welsh collie) to london to visit friends, I exercised him in the central london parks. Every dog owner wanted to know where I got the whistle. If it was now, I think the nutters would ask where I got the app from!!!😂😂😃
@amandar7719
@amandar7719 3 жыл бұрын
PS. Don’t ever tell the children what your whistle commands are. Bear is a family dog. Con is too, but not as clever as Bear. I taught my dog to learn commands from those that think they knew better - who, att, I was surrounded by. He obliged to keep them amused as and when he felt like it. The whistle and near/long hand/voice signals that allowed him hours of long distant fun, were mine and his. Oh.... and the horses I rode. They knew the dog came first. It was quite an amazing time, actually. The dog went forward and made safe “horse monsters”, flushed out deer (or lions if horses could cry wolf 😄) and men in white sport shoes... 😳, I’ve always believed dogs are happier “working” when they know they can rely on specific “safety” commands/signals from those they feel they ultimately protect. It’s reciprocally innate, IMHO

Jess, get an invisible fence for the dogs. I think that's the name of it, what it is you bury a same cable in the ground where you want your dogs to only go and they wear something on their collar that gives them a little shock to tell them that they can only stay within the area you want them in. A lot cheaper and quicker then putting up a fence right now.

I’m glad you’ve taken a bit of downtime. Moving is so stressful, and your move has been an act of heroism for both of you! So glad to hear you’re plugged in with a local church. Sending your kids off to school after homeschooling for so long is stressful, too. Even in the best of situations. So, cut yourself some slack, girl. Looking forward to seeing you out your mark on your new digs. Bless you, until next time.

My daughter was homeschooled, we took a job at Six Paca Farm 13 years ago, to run a large alpaca farm… she really loved the idea of living on a farm… it meant that she would have to go to school, my husband would be working days now and I too worked days at a resort as a massage therapist… We decided take the job, we moved to the farm and signed her up for school. I had such mixed emotions… she was excited so I too wanted to be excited however after dropping her off and walking away I sobbed, I wasn’t expecting that reaction. Now she’s 23 and we look back at those days as some of the best times!

Yup, just finished lunch and enjoying J&J time. Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, work well as mulch. The stems make a great syrup for icecream, french toast etc. Gabrielle is loving the space for sure the herder in him is just pleased.

I am glad that you and Maya went to breakfast and had time to chill! Rest is important also!! It is like after a wedding the bride usually poops out and gets sick or very tired! So much planning and pulling together a big event! Then it is all done! You get through the event and then a stasis period to acclimate is necessary!

Two things....my husband always says...'If we do it all today Ma...what will we do tomorrow?' And... sometimes life feels like the rug has been pulled out from under us and everything is up in the air. We get anxious and frustrated just waiting for all the pieces to land so we can put it all back together again. But they ALL WILL LAND...some before others...some much later than expected....but they all will land. They always do. ❤️😊

You are so wise to not drive yourself so hard that you can't find those moments of joy and pleasure in your life. Good luck to the boys in their school journey. It sounds like it's a small-ish school/district, which should make the transition easier. They can establish new friendships and establishing relationships is easier in a smaller setting. Blessings to you all.

Holsteins Bloodred, German wine and KangaRhu are 3 varieties of Rhubarb that will do well in zone 8. I grow the Holsteins Bloodred here in zone 9-10 and it does fine. I used to like Rhubarb stalks raw when I was a kid, but now I like them in either jam or a pie. It is great that all of your kids will be going to school but it also means that your little garden buddy won't be in all of your garden videos. Life goes on.
