It absolutely confounds me that there are practices that do not sedate you when doing wisdom teeth. I just can't imagine not being sedated doing that.

I had two of my wisdom teeth removed without being sedated and had just a specific anestetic spammed in my mouth. Nothing else so I was fully awake and very much rational about stuff happening. It hurts but you can manage, once you're done you're extremeley tired for all the pain you endured that you can't even stand and when you can you need to walk very slowly. I didn't know people take valium for that, If they offered me that I would've gladly taken it. Maybe it's because I live in Italy (I don't know). Sometimes I have doubts about how good my dentist is because she feels very much like a torturer to me and in my family we're all scared by her. The thing is we are in debt with her so leaving is not an option really.

for real i was under GENERAL IV ANESTHESIA when i had my wisdom teeth out and it was the best dental experience of my life. i wish every dental procedure had the option to be totally knocked out (yes including cleanings). if i won the lottery the first thing i would do is find a place that would put me under for like 12 hours and just rip all my teeth out and replace them with stainless steel composite implants.

And assuming you will be properly sedated they also tell you not to eat or drink anything during the last 8-9 hours before the procedure because you can vomit when sedated, but you also lose your gag reflex, meaning that you can choke on your own vomit

Just got my wisdom teeth removed today. I can confirm, Jaiden had a horrible dentist. You are supposed to be unconscious. For me the worst part of the dentist trip itself was the IV stuff. I hate needles. But other than that, what really sucks is the recovery. I cannot stop bleeding, blood is just drooling out of my mouth and going down my throat. It's awful. Plus the jaw pain is horrendous.

you don't need to be unconscious at all, you should always stick with local anesthesia unless the patient has some severe issue that prevents them from remaining calm. Using general sedation is a very rare practice for dentistry worldwide these days.

And everyone else I know was either knocked out or put on laughing gas so I’m not sure where you’re coming from. Edit: looked into it and results are unclear. Some say IV is the best and most common son say it’s rare so I’d like to apologize. Have a good night.

I always wondered if dentists are actually extremeley evil and sadistic people since unlike other kinds of doctor they freaking yank teeths, drill in sensitive spots, press where it hurts and so on and ultimateley activeley create much more suffering (for many clients, or at least it was so for me all my life up to now) than what was experienced before. To the point whenever I notice something off in my mouth I shake in fear never for what I would suffer if I do nothing but for I what pain I would suffer if I will go to see *her* . What I'm trying to say is that I would emotionally be devasted if all day I need to hurt my patients to do my job correctley, I could never stand it.

@@edwardsuou I'm really sorry for your past bad experiences with dentist but i can assure you that we are not trying to hurt you on purpose and i really get why we are the most not popular doctors between others😂 you see all the tools the we use to treat you and i know it looks like a torturing device and the huge needle we have may look scary and really scare you but they are really not harmful .and as the thing we pressed on the sensitive areas that called intraoral examination so we know you don't have any other problems that may ceases serious problems.and lets be real being a dentist is a really hard things to do from college to clinic and always have to be positive so you can comfort your patient and at the end of the day all we want the you all in good health and happy that's all the things that matter to us🤍.

honestly what stresses me out the most about going to the dentist is the judgment. i can handle the needle sticks and the drilling sounds but i can't handle "wow you have NOT been taking very good care of your teeth, your gums are bleeding, why aren't you flossing..." i genuinely wish i could chew food without teeth because i would just have them all ripped out so i never had to deal with them again.

@@edwardsuou i think you might also have a bad dentist. if they're doing their job correctly, they AREN'T hurting you. yes they're pulling teeth but if you're in pain, they've missed something. i've had dentists ask if i could still feel anything after they gave me novocaine (twice) and when i said yes they said "okay then we need to stop, i can't work on you while you're in pain." they referred me to an oral surgeon who doped me up so good my whole head felt like it was made of wood and i was giggling while he pried my tooth out of my mouth. second best dental experience of my life (first was when i was fully unconscious for my wisdom teeth).

As a fellow "awake for oral surgery" person, you have my condolences. I had impacted canines (the adult teeth never descended through the jaw and the holes they were meant to travel through closed up and they drifted away with time) and they had to do an absurd amount of ripping, cutting, and drilling to finally access them. I also had a very bad orthodontist who misaligned my teeth and then shaved them down to try and compensate. I've had muscular problems in my jaw, neck, and shoulders ever since. I share all your feelings and more. I was awake for my oral surgery too, I got a root canal, three cavities, and cavities in my wisdom teeth this year alone. I was really scared, and the dentist I was in was a bit haunting to me. But they were kind enough to let me listen to my iPhone while doing it and while they were doing the surgeries on me all I could think about was the intense pain I was feeling and all the support and memories from my friends that made it more comforting to me. I hate going to the dentist as well, but my wisdom teeth removal was different and much better experience. I was in my senior year of high school, they wanted to take out all 4 wisdom teeth out. I laughed so hard seeing you saw that 80’s video as well because they legit showed me the same thing. I also had a part time job after school so I was basically allowed to not work or school for 2 days so that was nice. When the day came, they gave me a IV and I swear when the nurse told me they inserted the drugs I remember telling myself I needed to stay awake and that’s when the ceiling started to move like a train track. After that I woke up and they told me it was over. I had gaws in my mouth and had to replace them once I got home due to them being soaked with blood. Your experience sounds much more terrifying, I wish you could’ve had a IV as well. Also, I was also that kid that cried when the dentist did the slightest thing.

For me, the worst thing about the wisdom teeth removal was the fact there was a needle inserted into my hard palate. Because that was triggering both my gag reflex as well as just plain hurt. Fun fact: taking your wisdoms teeths out without sedation is really common outside the US. In my country it's really normal to get them out while conscious, actually I think it's illegal to sedate you during this procedure bc it's more dangerous to be sedated than it is to be awake

As an epileptic, I know what it's like to bite chunks out of your tongue and not realise until much later. The healing process is not fun, and I've gotten tongue wound infected plenty of times and had to wash said wounds out with antibacterial mouth wash, which is even more painful than just trying to eat, drink, and talk with an open wound in your tongue. I can relate: One year ago, I had an orthodontist appointment and they put some kind of metal thing in my mouth. The result was me not being able to eat OR drink for 24 hours straight! I couldn't even swallow without starting to choke! "Why didn't I take it off?" you may ask? TRY TAKING SOMETHING OFF WHILE IT'S SUPERGLUED TO YOUR TEETH!!! We don't live in an Eddsworld episode; You can't just tear out your upper jaw just like that, and if you do, it won't be like "Oh don't worry, it'll grow back soon...", no, in real life it won't. When my mom tried to get me an emergency appointment, she was told that that service was no longer available! (Frick you NHS...) The next day I got it taken off, and trust me, I was in heaven!!! I finally got to eat again!!! What did I learn from this experience? That you CAN breathe and swallow at the same time!

I was actually also wide awake for my wisdom teeth appointment. Here in Germany, dentist actually don't really use these relaxing procedures, or at least the ones that make your mind all fuzzy. I had the choice between the normal, half-as-strong painkiller or a more stronger variant during the surgery, so I paid 14€ to get the more stronger variant they would put into my veins and the roof of my mouth. It took a while to work, but eventually have gone full power after 15 minutes. It was kind of relaxing :D They put a little blanket thingy over my face, with a hole for the mouth, and I almost fell asleep. I'm lucky that, despite having some negative experiences at dentists, that I had no fear whatsoever

I was the opposite as a kid. I loved the dentist so much that one time when I went, my brother had a appointment but I didn’t, so I started to cry cause I loved the dentist so much. The dentist saw me and asked me why I was crying and I said “cause I want to get my teeth checked” he ended up checking my teeth cause I’m guessing he felt bad for me. And while doing that he said “I’ve never had a kid cry cause they didn’t have an appointment” That dentist probably still remembers that. Like he was completely caught off guard by why I was crying.

Here in the UK, as far as I'm aware, being knocked unconscious is never an option, and after having two teeth removed, my entire experience was me accidentally almost biting the dentist's fingers off on multiple occasions because my mouth was numb and the onus was on me to keep my mouth open as wide as possible without any guard to hold my mouth open. I wasn't even given sunglasses, I was just given normal goggles so the drill dust from my own tooth didn't go into my eyes.

I remember I went to a dentist (There was a loose tooth I didn't know was loose, and I bit a caramel and it came out, the corners apparently broke off during the caramel tear and were stuck in like tiny spikes in my gum. No, it didn't hurt because I was just in pure shock at the fact a sweet ripped my tooth out) and there was also a dead tooth that needed to be removed. While he did take the corners and the dead tooth out like he's the protagonist of far cry 2, the anaesthetic worked so well it was actually satisfying.

If there any young people out there that still have baby teeth, listen up! If you’re ever scared of pulling out your tooth just know that it doesn’t hurt. The nerve is completely gone so it’s just a shell. Yes it might hurt for a second because it is still attached to your gum but it’s just a little pinch so don’t be afraid.

I identify with this SO much! I have bad anxiety at the dentist. I've had two wisdom teeth (b/c that's all I had) & 4 permanent teeth removed. I had to get the works. Valium, the gas stuff, & Halcyon--the medicine that makes you forget. Even now with doing simple things like fillings, I still have get the gas & Valium. So I totally understand this level of fear. Even though I know I'm going to be fine, my body says I'm going to die. That's not fun at all, but I'm slowly trying to conquer that fear.

I also was scared of the dentist as a kid(who isn't?), and thank god I wasn't conscious when I had my wisdom teeth out. I have a small mouth so those things had no choice but to go, and I was terrified given all the horror stories I'd heard from relatives, friends, and online. Thankfully, they put me completely out. The only problem was that they used IV meds to do it, and I am very afraid of needles. The nurses understood and let me put a blanket over my head so I couldn't see and one held my hand while they put them in. Next thing I knew, I was lying in my parents' bed with wads of gauze in my face. I tried eating one bite of pudding, but almost immediately threw it back up. I basically camped out on the couch for the next few days, my diet consisting mainly of pudding, jell-o, pumpkin pie, soup, and other soft foods. They gave me this band that went around my head that had pockets for two ice packs which was nice. I didn't have to constantly hold them, just swap them out when they got warm. I recovered after a week or two.

I didn't even get medicine for anxiety because I have a weirdly high tolerance for dentist procedutes. Mouth was numbed and I only felt slight pain as they sawed my wisdom teeth and pulled them out. Worst part of it was just having my mouth numb the rest of the day and bleeding sporadically over the next few. And while I couldnt feel my tongue, I came up with a system to place it in a known position so I could keep track of it while I ate.

I had overcrowding, so a few months ago, I had to remove not just my 4 wisdom teeth, but a few more, too. I had to go once to remove 4 on the left and 4 on the right. Both times I got general anaesthesia instead of complete sedation. In reality, it’s not as scary as it looks. Just make sure your dentist is genuinely a professional who’s really good with the needle. If they are, the prick will feel far less intimidating. Then when you’re in the office, do not EVER let yourself see the needle. Out of sight, out of mind. In my experience, they gave me two doses for both sides: One weak dose to cause mild numbing, such that when the second much stronger one comes, it’s more manageable. And then I felt absolutely nothing for the entire operation despite them dragging my face around while yanking my teeth out. And no problems whatsoever.

This is really helpful to know that im not the only one who get overwhelmed when going to the dentist I actually have to get a tooth filled in today even though I know that they’re gonna give me laughing gas so that I won’t feel anything and I’ll just be loopy the whole time it’s still quite nerve racking so I’m watching this video before I go. I have to get a tooth filled in because ever since I was little. I think my teeth have been like not properly formed because of the way I was born and there’s a two at the back of my mouth that isn’t filled in properly, and there’s a hole in it, so they need to put filling in it.
