Can never have too many sharpening videos! I sucked back a gallon of Kool-Ade and bought CBN wheels right off the bat thinking it was the answer to my sharpening woes! I love the things, but I’ve learned it’s practice, not the wheels that make the tool sharp!

Thanks for the comment. When I started turning, I eventually purchased what was considered the best at the time. Now we have CBN, the next "best" thing. In a couple of years, I expect that there will be a new "best" for all of us to go to. Oh well, you can't take your money with you. Thanks for following.

If you're doing it right then you don't need any practice. It may take a bit to figure out how to do it right though. Sharpening is all about the proper technique. Which if you're doing it right is foolproof. If it's hard then you're doing something wrong. There's a lot of controversy surrounding sharpening. Because a lot haven't figured it out for themselves yet.

CBN makes sharpening easier. Which for beginners is a plus. For anyone really.

Yes, you are right on that account. I learned to sharpen in the "old days" and initially did not see them as necessary. I have used it quite a bit since the video and am quite enjoying the CBN. There will definitely be more content about CBN wheels. Thanks for the comment.

@@RLDRCustomCreations-zd4zj I use a friable tool room wheel. It works well. It cuts fast and cool. My main grinder is a 10" model with a 3/4" shaft. She's thicc. I have a lifetime supply of wheels for it too. At the rate I'm using them a few lifetimes.

@@1pcfred Thanks for the comment. Your equipment is a bit more serious than what I am using. It obviously works for you so happy sharpening.

@@RLDRCustomCreations-zd4zj what I have isn't more serious. I made it out of scrap and junk I collected from here and there. All of the randomness added up to good results though. I got lucky. Which is a good thing. Sometimes the fates smile on you. At the same time I did try to steer myself in the best direction I could though. But having done it I can't take total credit for how things turned out. A lot of things had to go right. Things I didn't plan. Like the final orientation of the tool rest. I didn't do that on purpose. The way it is the tool is plumb when it's on the rest. That's brilliant. You'll never know how great that it. Not unless you try it for yourself. Getting the gravity assist. It ending up that way was total chance though.

Apologies if I missed this but what grit cbn wheel did you get?

Thanks for the comment. I purchased my CBN wheel from Lee Valley. The item number is 77j8148. I purchased the 180 grit option. It seems like a nice wheel, but if they would sell a one inch wide wheel, I would have purchased that for my 3/4 hp grinder. This 1.5 inch wheel has a lot of mass and I think a lighter wheel would be better for my grinder. My view is that if you buy only one wheel, get the 180 grit option. Thanks.

@@RLDRCustomCreations-zd4zjThanks for answering so quickly! Really appreciate the info. Very useful. I think one inch wide is sufficient. Bit cheaper also!

@@RLDRCustomCreations-zd4zj that does look like a nice grinder to me. It runs that CBN wheel good too. None of that is a given.
