Natasha Hynes, from Montreal, Canada, bought a Dodge Sprinter van in 2021 with the dream of waking up in the mountains of the West Coast. After downsizing her life to move out of a toxic living situation and into a van with her 3 cats, Natasha crossed the country overcoming many obstacles along the way.
Over the following four months she would cross the country two more times, once on her way to document a historic moment in Canada, and another after being abandoned without a vehicle by her then co-traveler on the wrong side of the county.
While facing many life-threatening scenarios along the way, she made her way back to her van on the west-coast. Her vlog, Quest Out West, chronicles the good and bad of van life, travel, and life struggles without the glamorous bias you see on social media, with the ultimate goal of inspiring you to face your fears, transcend limitations, and go after the life you really want.

Forest fires are a part of summer. We live in a rural area of the Okanagan and every summer we never know if we will once again have a fire threatening our home and property. We've been put on evacuation alert a few times and it ain't fun. Getting all our precious irreplaceable possessions packed and ready to load into our RV at a moments notice. One year, after the alert lifted I found a whole tote full of 35mm taken photos of my kids that had been overlooked! I thank God we have not had to evacuate so far. It's scary. You've probably thought of this option, but I'll suggest it just in case. Instead of an expensive apartment, where your money just disappears into the landlord's pocket, have you looked into buying an older travel trailer and setting up fulltime in an RV park? There are a lot of small towns in BC with RV parks that take fulltimers. It may be a cheaper option to renting an apartment. Just an idea.

Does Canada do what the usa does where a mental health professional can produce a document that your pet is an emotional support animal and non-pet apartments/ houses had to accept the animal?

I have a double decker pet stroller which I put my dog and cat in when I'm traveling and don't want to leave my babies in a hot truck. Maybe you can put 2 in one and the 3rd kitty in the other. It's awesome. Lightweight and my babies love it. Just a thought. ❤

I so feel for you n kitties… Airs clear back in druggies port Nanaimo. I haven’t made it back to Calgary.. gotta stay out of too much heat and have to also have good air for sister and little Prince. May things change for you soon for the better

BC is so terrible when it comes to rentals and pets. We have such a beautiful province but outside of that it's become increasingly hard to live here. The town I live in has a ton of jobs but places to rent with pets is few and far between. As for fires..we've not even begun fire season in BC which is scary. I appreciate the cliffhanger ending in this one, because I know that means you will have another video out soon! But I don’t appreciate that you had to go through Scary stuff either. Over here we have awful smoke days/weeks every season except winter. Our forestry people do a lot of what they call controlled burns which are supposed to be to get rid of the bushfire risk winter growth on the forest floor. But they frequently get out of control. Not to mention that the wind blows the smoke from elsewhere in the state, and it collects in our bowl of a city. Then there are the actual bush fires in summer… I was really worried when you were talking about the air quality and sounding breathless. My eyes were prickling and sore in sympathy. So happy to see furniture in the cliffhanger, because I know what that means 🥰

No, this summer, it depended on which way the wind blew. You can go camping in a place far away from the wildfires. One day it would be sunny and clear, the next it was smoky. Then the next few days would be nice again. The lower mainland saw no smoke until very late summer, weirdly enough.

In California last years it was found that illegal aliens were responsible for many of the big wildfires there. The media and politicians tried to hide this and they've done a good job.

Why don't you go up into the mountain tops? During a heat wave you will find the best cooling, in the tops of the mountains! And there with you in Canada there are many, and high ones. Where I live (Belgium) there are unfortunately no high mountains, but about 10 years ago, I was on holiday in Portugal, below it was quickly 35 ° C hot and to find some cooling we just went to the highest mountain over there driven, about 2000M high, there it was about 16°c at the top so we parked our cars somewhere halfway where it was about 20°c to take the heat of the day (Siesta) with nice and pleasant temperature

Maybe this is a sign to take your van into the forest for awhile to stay cool. The fires are all over the place. The smoke clears but then can obviously return. Just go to the an old growth forest the air will be cleaner and the temp cooler

Did you not check things out before going north? With all the fires going on in Northern BC and Alberta, I am shocked you would take the risk. But, I also don't blame you as the cost of living is skyrocketing here. I plan on leaving as well. Excellent video though showing your experience of the region. And stay safe out there in those conditions. Its scary stuff. My older son is in Northern Alberta, he said its been hell.

Im from the east coast and it was early on when the fires had just started so I didnt think of it, especially after my cousin was like "cool, see you soon." We dont get wild fires like this out east. Not until this year. So when I heard they were in Alberta I didnt think we would get smoke all the way here. It just didnt occur to me.

Hi Natasha, I really feel for you, and the cats, and those wildfires are very scary. At the start of your video I was shocked at the cost of an apartment, and so annoyed at the ones who won't allow pets ugh! Sadly its the same over here in the UK 🇬🇧 Private landlords ads read like "No pets, No smokers, No dhss ( benefit) suit professional person/person's etc etc. And they are so expensive. Hence why I stay on my boat. I really hope your luck changes and you find an affordable apartment for you and the cats. 🐱🐱🐱🙏

It would be nice if you knew someone who has a rental or knows someone that would hook you up. Most don't allow cats probably because a lot of renters are irresponsible but I know you would never leave a rental property in bad condition and are responsible with you pets.

Minimum wage is like $14 I think. Its not enough. Especially in squamish. How can businesses that pay min wage survive if ppl cant live on that and will have to leave town to afford rent? They will hire the indian immigrants who are willing to live 2+ ppl per bedroom. Plus very few places let you have cats. Thats why so many ppl live in vehicles. And so many locals want to complain about it because they dont understand the economy.
