So I'm going to weigh in here! (get it 😂) Hi everyone it's Sam here! For those that are asking, yes Michael and I are still friends! He has lost but not as much as planned and I have gained... But not as much as planned. I still struggle with food quite alot, but I've made it a priority and I've really had to get in a different mindset towards it. I still haven't got the body that I want, that requires going to the gym and... I can't be bothered! 😂 I'm also a pro with a knife and fork these days! Wishing everyone luck on their own journeys, get your mind in the right place (which is a hell of alot of harder to do than it is to type in here) and everything will fall into place with diet. He says "sorry," when he had nothing to feed his supersize meal buddy, "you're a nice guy, you deserve to eat something" sorta, and I thought he ought to say that to himself. He deserves to eat. He needs a meal. If you think of yourself as someone else, who's lovely and kind and sweet, and you don't feed them or let them sleep, you don't look after them, that's how some people need to learn to look after themselves.

that last sentence... So eye-opening! :o
@w1975b2 жыл бұрын
I understand why people would feel sorry for Michael not having anything to eat, except the excess stored body fat is actually fuel for him. That is a huge purpose of body fat, to provide fuel and prevent starvation during times of famine. Depending on the level of obesity, a person could live off their stored body fat for a year or more (I heard of a man who did that for a year, fasted, consuming zero food and he lost at least 100 lbs iirc). They may not enjoy it, but they would not starve to death. And after a time, they may not feel hunger. The first step would be switching his body from sugar burning (Michael consumed carbs, not just meat) to fat burning.
@joeygirl3142 жыл бұрын
@@w1975b - not just a huge purpose: fuel for the body in the absence of external food is the *ONLY* purpose of stored body fat!!😊 As Dr. Fung (modern EXPERT on fasting) says, “it’s not there for looks!”😂🤣🙏🏼😊 The longest recorded fast in history was by a Scotsman who fasted for 382 days and lost a total of 276 pounds (for you guys so inclined, that’s 125 Kilos…or 19 St, 10 lbs😉). He was monitored the entire way by trained medical personnel. Agreed, RE switching from being a “sugar burner” to a “fat burner”…I believe once Ghrelin, the hunger hormone, subsides - there’s little to no actual hunger; someone Michael’s size would certainly not starve to death! The longest I’ve gone completely without food is 7 contiguous days in one sitting; it takes roughly 2-3 days to adjust (though, each subsequent attempt is MUCH easier after the first extended one, and IMO you get back there much more quickly). As you mentioned, it’s the sugar-burner aspect that makes it difficult for someone in Michael’s situation - being denied food, while his counterpart has a veritable buffet in front of him, that is - to be there. What most people perceive as physical hunger is actually plummeted blood sugar, from having consumed something that raised it (usually excessively), prior. He seems like such a nice guy (they BOTH do!)…I hope they have both continued on their respective journeys started here, and were able to keep things going in the direction they each desired. Would LOVE to see an update, but it looks like this was possibly the last episode produced (phooey!).🤔🤨😝 Ah well…if it was the last, it was a really nice one to end the series. I’m with other reviewers/commenters in that I finished this one with a light and happy/hopeful feeling, rather than frustration and a slight bit of disgust - from the annoying and self-righteous attitudes of some of the participants. If anyone finds a current status on either of these young men, please post back here!!🙏🏼😊😁 Cheers!
@w1975b2 жыл бұрын
@@joeygirl314 that is NOT the only purpose of stored body fat. Body fat also insulates against cold, protects internal organs from damage and can create hormones like estrogen. That's why I worded my first comment the way I did, as "a" instead of "the".

22:26 watching Michael talk about his grandfather dying and remembering how his everyday breakfast is the breakfast his grandpa always made him has me bawling my eyes out - such a rare moment of respect and openness between contestants that I’ve seen on this show so far. Michael reminds me of my uncle, who was my absolute best friend and mentor. I miss him everyday, and when he died at the start of the COVID pandemic (due to health complications) I lost a lot of weight. It has taken me a year of gym going and consistent eating to come to a healthy weight of 118 lbs at 5’5. But I’m so proud of myself for finding love for myself and fitness again by remaining active, cutting out processed sugars, and allowing myself to forgive my slip ups. Everyday, I miss my uncle - I wish I could have helped him, but everyone has their own demons. Remember that people love you, you are valued, and you must keep trying to save yourself no matter what. You deserve it, you owe it to yourself. Take care everyone. This episode touched my heart… sorry for the verbal baggage LOL ❤

I know this is a year old comment but i just wanted to say that i have been in the exact same shoes as yours. I lost my uncle during covid, he was a father figure to me. I lost so much weight after that, lost all my motivation. But with time, I picked myself back to a healthy routine of exercise and eating right. Your comment reminded me of my own struggles. Take Care.

Honestly the part with Debra made me start crying. I grew up poor as well, and everyone in my family has defensive eating disorders. I remember when I was eight, I was hiding a hand-sized bag of chips under my mattress for months, just in case something happened and my family needed an emergency pack of chips. Our pots would fall apart into our food, and to this day I can't eat mac-n cheese. The US healthcare system doesn't exist.

I think the reason Michael and many others are so large and addicted to food is that they are missing the excitement in their life. With every bite it gives them the joy in life they crave and fills that void. I think there pain in their past is part of it..but years of being stuck in the past and never moving on from it, impairs them from experiencing the joy and taste of life. Just my theory. 🤔
@claireopolot56764 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. What baffles me though is that most of us generally overeat. I normally eat till my tummy hurts a little. I've been doing this for years but I've never weighed more that 64kgs. How does one continue eating past a sore tummy to gain that much weight?. I suppose its really about the quality of food. Most of us Africans have grown eating mostly organic wholesome food. Fast food is just a treat.

@@claireopolot5676 Quantity of food doesnt always correlate with high caloric density. A huge chicken salad that takes 20 minutes to eat and fill you up completely can be like 500 calories, whereas a SMALL SIZE combo meal at mcdonalds can exceed 1000 calories. The key to a good diet is eating low calorie high density foods that fill you up. These people are eating tiny portions of food that are over 1000 calories and that's how they are overeating.

@@laurbr9567 sugar is definitely addictive. But not to the point that it keeps you bed ridden. I think a combination of an addictive personality, which I have, plus never overcoming your past wounds keeps you stuck..like literally! Mind and body! 😔 Having an addictive personality is not so bad. There are strengths and weaknesses to it. Which side you choose to nurture is the focus here. With an addictive personality, you have a drive for finding the taste of all aspects of life..not just food. I've learned to channel that through different filters in my life for the better and the will to WANT to live! ❤ Just my OP.
