53:55 my guitar technician worked for Washburn as a master builder for a decade. He told me a story about delivering a set of three or four guitars to dime for a tour. Within a few tour stops 2/3 were broke at the jeadstock, so they had to scramble, make him two more extras and then repair the others. The two that dime broke and my tech fixed, where forgotten and never really thought about again until they were found when washburn USA fired everyone and cleaned house. They were both given to my tech and I can proudly say I have played one of dimes road worn guitars!

The people who are "flipping" guitars require you find someone who is a bigger fool than yourself to sell it to latter. Gibson is trying to sell a guitar to you for a price that is higher than it is worth, in this case $2,000...... where it should actually be worth $1,200 based on appointments and finish, but you gladly pay it because you assume you can find someone who is an even a bigger fool than yourself to sell it to latter. This has worked great in the economy we have had for the last 15 years, not so sure it will continue to work in the economy we are now entering into. This new $50,000 Gary Moore - Greenie clone Gibson is offering is the epitome of this nonsense.

Sweetwater just released another Josh Scott video where he identifies 10 pedals blindfolded by feel alone. He got all ten right. It was like watching a super hero do their special ability. He identified a Keely Compressor by the bezel on the LED. He figured out a DiMarzio pedal from the spacing of the knobs. You should go and watch it if you haven't seen it yet. Any guitar that is an artist signature model that _doesn't_ come with truly custom hardware, will have a seriously inflated price. It's actually very rarely ever worth it. Want a Slash sound in a "Slash" guitar? Do yourself a favour and just mod an Epiphone or Chibson with some Seymour Duncan Slash pickups, instead of getting the signature Slash guitars. It's cheaper and better sounding. If you want to avoid scalpers, just don't buy secondhand. Don't reward the scalpers for what they do. They want to own 20 Gibsons they will never unload for double the price? Good on them, they can keep it. Also, because there will usually be a finite amount of guitars made of any particular model, you'll always run into an issue of scarcity. Most of these brands don't really ever bother to make 50,000 of the same guitars. Or if they do, will take like 10 years to do so for it.

regarding flipping- I've been seeing the same kinda thing my whole adult life- and I always liken it to something I experienced back in the very early 1990's, when I was a college student- I wasn't exactly a fashion plate, decent pair of khakis and a flannel shirt, and I'm "dressed up'- so I would buy clothes at thrift stores- the thrift stores, to cycle stuff out would do a weekly sale, everything was 50 cents, or a dollar, or what have you, and as cheap as I was, I wouldn't shop on those days, because there'd be hordes of middle aged women there to fill up shopping carts with stuff. None of it was for personal use- they were getting inventory to sell at the swap meet the next week. I didn't hate them for it, I just didn't want to have to fight someone for a flannel shirt. That's what I see folks doing all the time- everybody wants to find something that is "undervalued" just sos they can sell it. Same with buying a 2k Beato guitar, and selling it for 3.5K- I can see the logic- Beato has what? 3 million subs? More? Less? there's no way that Gibson made enough for the potential demand, so, the thinking is that any price would be undervalued, if enough people want it- and that's the trick- I don't want one even 2k bad. Not when I have guitars already that tick enough boxes for me, but let's say it's a 'gotta have', like clothes on your back type gotta have, is it worth a bidding war? or is it like my 50 cent flannel shirt- still not worth arguing over....

Whether its tasteful or not, it all boils down to supply and demand-its capitalism at work. It can be messy, ugly, and infuriating. Just remember, same process is why we have all the things we take for granted as daily necessities (cell phones, air conditioned homes, indoor plumbing, two car plus families, and so on) here in US-but also same has spilled over into lower income countries all over the earth. When wireless phones first came out in late 1970s-they were sooo expensive to buy and operate only the very wealthy had them. But market forces drove the developers and manufacturers to make them smaller, better, cheaper with self contained batteries, better reception, etc and even loaded with more computing power than the onboard computers on the Apollo space capsule. Now nearly everyone in US has a wireless phone and even people still living in mud and thatch roofed, dirt floor houses in Africa, Asia, and South America also have them. None of that development and affordability or the actual invention of the device tool place in a Marxist/Communist/Socialist nation.
@jktolford8272
@jktolford8272 Жыл бұрын
@@gregoryhall3156 Nonsense & superstition. *Speculative* markets do not drive innovation nor efficiently allocate resources. Scalpers & flippers played no role in the popularization of cell phones. The roaming frequencies technology *shelved* by DOD in WWII was invented by an actress ex-wife of a pro-Nazi munitions seller & an avant guard piano composer. Air conditioned homes rely on refrigeration technology invented by an agrarian communal Christian sect to facilitate separation from the US mainstream. Two car plus families are not necessary & are central in causing global climate change. Most of the world does not live in *either* the US or a Marxist/Communist/Socialist nation.

Tbone says he sold his tube screamer because he's looking for "warm and creamy"- you need the Tone City Sweet Cream drive my friend. If you're familiar with the "Sweety" drive- it was made to simulate that edge of breakup tone- well Tone City took that drive and made it super creamy and smooth and viola- the Sweet Cream was born. If you want a smooth, bluesy overdrive- look no further. And- they're only about 50 bucks- shipped, from Andertons. And no, I'm no affiliated with the company or the vender- just a happy customer. Tone city actually makes a whole line of "budget" pedals that aren't just "good for the money" they're just good- period. The Plexi drive is awesome, and so is the Black tea- best line of "budget" pedals I've ever found. And they're tiny, itty bitty, super small, little cute things- that produce big sound.

@@innocentoctave whether or not something about a guitar is important to you or not has nothing to do with what the guitar costs. Made in the USA guitars cost more because the cost of labor and everything else is exponentially more. Do you think that nothing should be made anywhere except Asia because that's the cheapest way to do it?
@innocentoctave
@innocentoctave Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisEck13 I understand why guitars are more expensive to manufacture in the West. That has no bearing at all on why the Beato model costs more than the standard model - also manufactured in the West. As for the charitable donation: if Gibson wanted to donate to charity, they could have done that directly. These guitars aren't being bought by players: they are being bought by speculators. The profits of any sale after the first won't go to Gibson, or to Rick, or to charity: they will go into the pockets of the speculators.

I will comment on the guitar flipping. In 1987 I knew someone who owned one of the original Shelby 427 Cobras ($500K at the time) who used to regularly drive it at 100 mph on the highway. I asked him if he was worried about damaging it or hurting the value. He looked at me sternly, pointed his finger at me and said "Carroll Shelby did not build this car to sit in a museum. I am not going to insult Carroll Shelby by *not* driving his car." I took that to heart. Unless it is art to be admired like a painting or sculpture, a thing that was designed as a tool should be used as such. Guitars should be purchased with the intent to play, cars should be purchased with the intent to drive. If you aren't going to use it, don't buy it. Let someone who will purchase it.

Exactly- they couldn't exist if ppl didn't buy the stuff- but ppl do. And in reality, when this supply shit gets worked out- if it ever does, this will be curved considerably. Companies would love to make enough to get all those sales and not let these guys make this money off their product but- right now they can't. These guys can buy up the initial run, and the company can't get another one out in time to stop them from being able to sell them all. But you can bet they're working on it- that's potential profit hanging in the wind.

Same thing is happen but when they're flipping it's 15K to 20K over MSPR and it's the dealerships that are doing it. Not all of the dealers but most of them are doing it. I decided not go for Vett and looked at Dodge Charger ScatPack WideBody. Same flippin (pun) thing is happening to them. I reside in Los Angeles. I found a Dodge at a small town dealer in Arizona. They are not over inflating the price. Consider it sold. Point being this buy and flipping or charging over MSRP is affecting everything because of supply chain issues. I believe it is going to slow down as the Fed's continue to raise the prime rate American's will be more judicious when spending.

Phil, us metal guitarists who use tube screamers and other comparable pedals going into high gain amps, isn't about adding any more gain. Generally the gain is all the way down, and the level is all the way up... it's more about a little more push in the mids, and tightening the low end of the amp. It just helps to clear things up and cut through a mix better.

Another possible wide neck option. The much maligned 2015 Gibson Les Paul jr. I’m an acoustic player who owns and plays mostly martins. That Gibson has the same diameter nut. I acquired the guitar cheap enough so I didn’t mind heavily modding it. Besides neck width, I changed or added the headstock logo back dated an addition of a Charlie Christian in the neck. Inspired by Lennon’s Les Paul. Plays wonderfully.

I like Rick Beato, and I've no doubt that the Beato signature Gibson Les Paul Special is a decent instrument - but 2 grand? 2 grand for Gibson to change the colour of the paint slightly and take wood off? Come on. It costs half as much again as the basic model. Why? You can buy a new Les Paul, or an SG, or a Junior for less. The Gibson USA Les Paul Standard '50s P90 Gold Top is barely more. I know which I would buy.
@zoeherriot

It's expensive, but it's not just colour and taking wood off. It also comes in a hard shell case, has neck binding and is a limited artist model. Now is that worth $2000? Probably not .. is it worth half? Hell no, it's definitely a better specced instrument than the base models.

The Kirk Hammett is actually worthy, because of its history: started out with Peter Green (there’s a video of Fleetwood Mac’s original lineup doing “Oh Well”, with Peter Green playing the same guitar), then became Gary Moore’s (a full Thin Lizzy concert from Australia exists on KZbin showing Gary playing said guitar) and now Kirk owns it.

??? Phillip McKnight - I'm building several electric guitars. When I bought the wood over time I forgot I had white ebony and I thought it looked like korina or limba. Do you think they might be the same or related or who cares? I'm going to make a 35" inch bass scale length neck and make the violin body style in white ebony and maple back, simular to the Hofner bass form but 35" inch long scale length. I need advice on pickups for basses? Any recommendations?

Bought the beato les paul yesterday at GC. Returned it this morning. Found issues where binding butts up to neck. It wasnt flush and made for sharp edges. Looked at a same priced SG at GC and it had same issue, just less severe. Apparently Gibson needs to stay away from satin finished necks and stick with the high gloss paint that fills in all their flawed work. Its such a shame, guitar had great sound and fantastic action. Rick needs to find another vendor to use his name that produces something worth the money.

37:21 In this case, it isn't quite that simple as flipping (as in real estate), because Rick's cut goes to charity. So the ick-factor (for me) is more poignant than in the normal free market. It is true that the charity is still getting the cut, but it is unpleasant to think of pure profit on top of that. Perhaps Gibson should have charged more from the outset?

There are lots of fake restoration videos out there. I've seen a few for rusty old "antique" guns and knives/swords. Many of the commenters are pointing out that this "restoration" will probably destroy any actual historic value a real item might have. But the worst fake videos, to me, are the animal rescue ones. I don't know which ones are real and which are fake, so I mostly avoid those videos whenever they come up.

i gotta be wrong here, but wouldn't golden fret's bend and deteriorate extremely quickly? i assume they mean, gold plated.. but for the asking price for the same of these finishing touches i have to believe they are at least 16 carat.

Honestly? I think Reverb is a major contributor with inflated prices. People always ask high on reverb. Because they expect some lower offers. But when you just scan a guitar on reverb, your first instinct is that the asking price is the going price. And that will have the effect of normalizing those prices. I have a couple of old guitars and when I see them on reverb they are over double of what I see them for when they are for sale locally.

I've wanted Rick's Special with the P-90's since I first saw it. But I already really like the LP Special. It's right in there with the PRS Custom 22. And with the P-90 sound a smidge lighter, I think it's worth the $2000. And Rick's portion of the money goes to charity.

Don’t like rolled edges. It means lost real estate for the fret, and in the case of fenders usually the high E is near the edge of the neck. I had a 2017 fender professional Strat with rolled edges. I couldn’t keep the E string on the neck, totally unplayable so I sold it. I make my own necks now with a extra 2mm width at the heel and don’t put a heavy angle on the big stainless frets I use.
