Lifting a truck should be openly recognized as a unnecessary act to achieve maximum testosterone levels. I think if more men came to terms with this there would be less external pressure to lift your truck. Sounds silly when you think about it. My stock Tacoma is plenty high enough coming from a carolla, the idea that it should be lifted beyond its 9.4 clearance is completely useless. If you wanted a higher stance on the road, buy a larger truck with that extra money.

Good morning, so my 2017 Tacoma has a 2" front and 1.5" rear Toytec lift with one inch larger Yokohama Geolander AT GO15 tire 265/75/16 (No rubbing). The truck sits level with my 200-pound truck topper and stuff in the back. NOW, Rob is completely correct about a lift costing a lot more because it opens you up to a huge money pit in m modifications. BUT, when you installed or had installed a lift did they tell you about the infamous Needle Bearing issue. Yes, the low roaring noise you will hear when driving at 30-40mph in your Tacoma after a lift is installed. There is a fix for the needle bearing that is stressed at the lifted angle, but it cost another $75 plus labor to install. It just keeps adding up. LOL but I still do it.

The negatives go on with wear and tare on bushings, ball joints and drive train components. Your gas mileage goes down to the point where you might as well have bought a full size truck. Going with a full set of bilstien 5100 shocks , going 2 inches max with stock springs and a 1 inch spacer in the back is perfect. Spacer pucks on the front differential and carrier spacers to mitigate vibration help . Tires should be kept narrow and tall like a 235 75 or 245 85 depending if you keep the stock 7.5 x17 rim . This keeps your speedometer from going nuts and maintains your tire pressure sensors.

Great commentary on lifting a Tacoma. I recently traded in my 2015 Lifted truck for a new 2020 TRD OffRoad and will be keeping it stock. The biggest issue I’ve noticed is the gas mileage. On my 2018 with stock wheels and tires I would get 20-21 MPG on the highway. I traded it in and got a 2021 with a lift and grapplers and now I get 15-16 MPG on the highway. With a full tank of gas I get 268 miles. On my 2018 I was getting well into the 300’s on a tank of gas.

My gen 2 is lifted, got it 2nd handed for a steal. But the people who lifted it were not smart. They didn’t align it and did not get a solid lift, just some spacers. It was so cheep that I completely through out the old lift and wheels. After it was all said and done I spent 4k+ on a quality full lift, arms, break lines, shocks struts, springs, and 285,75r,18s. It drives so great no problems. (A little stiff) If you spend a pretty penny you can have a great lift, and I would do it yourself or you’ll pay like 6k. It has been a fun project and I can honestly say I did the lift correctly. If you spend 2k on a lift and keep the same wheels , like the previous owners it won’t come out right. You CAN have a good lift just need to do it yourself and spend some serious cash unfortunately.

Lift kit leads to new rims and bigger tires. That leads to poor performance and gas mileage. That leads to more expense with gear change in both differentials and eventually everything leads to broken parts. Ive been there and done that.

I personally have 2 3rd gen tacomas and the only thing I would recommend is getting some good tires, and armor, (sliders, skidplates, etc) and a rear steel bumper. Other then that it's probably better to just get jeep or a dedicated off road vehicle. The tacomas are extremely capable 4x4s with the exception of a bad departure angle (you will rip your rear bumper off) ask me how I know. Obviously if you have the money and if you want to then do whatever you want. All I'm saying is that it's probably not necessary and a stock tacoma will do the job just fine. Anyway this is only an opinion.

I agree. I want a lift on my trd DCLB. But what I have done for now is a more aggressive tire, I plus sized to 265/75r16 and then I put on a "cat shield" but the HD skid plate version. No bumpers yet. My thought is if I can get down some access paths gravel roads here in the PNW to my fishing locations and some really offgrade camping spots then I'm fine. I really like the stance of a lifted Tacoma but I actually also like that I'm averaging 20 mpg. I would lose that with 285s

It’s a domino effect. One thing effects another. Like you said, when you lift it now you need bigger tires. Then depending on your lift you may need to re-gear or re-angle you driveshaft better and so on and so on. One can easily spend a lot of $$$$ to do everything right. Unless you can do it yourself and save some money.

If you do things for the wrong reasons you will regret it. Such is life. Lifting your Tacoma, Ford, Jeep or ANYTHING for the wrong reason won't give you what you really want. At the end of the day you should choose to make the best decisions for your personal use case. I actually go offroading often, so my lifted Taco and my Jeep get used and are a blast offroad, but I also set them up in a manner that I can road trip them without complaints. Even my wife doesn't mind driving them on road trips and loves the vehicles. "Feeling sorry" for anyone with a lifted Taco in this context could apply to just about ANYONE with a modified vehicle anywhere, there is always give and take, yin and yang, give something lose something. People regretting their modifications at the end of the day to me means they did it for the wrong reason or really didn't know what they wanted and spent the money anyway. Choose what you will use the vehicle for and stick to it and you will be happier with that choice, end of story.
