This song is a perfect example as to why the '80s were so connected by music. There were no barriers, there were no categories you HAD to fall into, there were no walls to hold you in. If you had the guts to do what you wanted, you were 100% free to do it.

I have been watching you for about a month now. I am a 60 year old woman and I can say after listening to you that I feel you Mother would be very proud of her son. The direction you are going and the love and care you express for you wife and children is inspiring. The world needs more of that very badly now. As a military daughter, wife and mother I have seen a lot of our country and the world. We are a wonderful country and we must try to keep it that way. Keep going forward and being an inspiration. God bless you and your family.

Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960 was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits. He was brought up in Denton[7] by his father, Reginald (1935-2009) a barber in Stockport.According to Hucknall he had a happy childhood until the age of 10, when he began to clash with his father "because there was no woman to act as referee"

His maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were Irish, and his maternal grandmother was an Ashkenazi Jew. Not sure about his paternal grandfather, but he claims that a DNA test showed his ancestry is Irish, Basque (an isolated population in Spain), and Ashkenazi.

Soul comes from the heart, the gut, not the color of the skin. I'm sure you know the term 'blue-eyed soul.' Sure, it might be easy for a singer to really project an emotion or mood while going through hard times because they're feeling it at the moment. But to be able to pull that soul up months or years later, or night after night, that's the drive, the dedication, the professionalism all feeding the soul. This is an amazing performance.

I remember me and my brother would play songs on our cd player and turn the TV Volume down and put on a channel and just pretend the lyrics from the song were going with the images on the tv, like a music video and the results usually were hysterical, especially when the tv show/movie that was on had a bunch of dialogue. We once played this song over the John Carpenter movie with Roddy Piper, They Live. Oh how we laughed

Great reaction to one of the bands of my youth, from 40 miles down the road from me. Manchester's finest! Mick Hucknell's voice is dynamite live. Any live performance is a masterclass. Please try their cover of The Air that I Breathe, originally by The Hollies and the amazing collaboration, Angel by Aretha Franklin with The Fugees. You can't sing Aretha without some talent and a pair like steel! ❤ By the way, when you have hair like me and Mick, you've just gotta let it do its own thing!!
