Damn, Nolan bro. The fact your pops is working with you on this project is f'n awesome man. I'm probably 15 years or more older than you (46), but my story is similar. My dad is the guy that got me into cars. Big time. He had a 55 Caddy we tricked out for the strip. I was there as a toddler, 3-4 Yo watching my dad race on the drags back in the 80s here in AZ....He passed several years ago.. He took me to my first Formula 1 race when i was 10 yo! He was too old by the time i started making enough to get multiple rides and tune/mod them at my shop.. we have always been huuuge Ferrari fans. I got my first Ferrari Last year. I would give anything to be able to have dad around now to let him drive it!!! Dad used to annoy me sometimes, but maaaan.... Cherish this time with your pops Nolan.

What an awesome story man. I'm sure he's proud of you now. From a fellow AZ Motorhead, I salute you. My dad is all the way in TX, so we don't get to do stuff like that. But, I just became a father myself, and I can't wait to see what kinds of projects he gets into. Whatever they are, I want to be there to help him out with them.

My dad's not a drag racer, but also got me into cars. My whole life, my earliest memory has been being 3 y.o. & crying when he sold his C4 Corvette in '98 and bought an F150 & a Nissan Altima when my little sister was born. He had many more cool, modded cars while I was growing up, and now drives a C8 Vette. I had kids young and even though I should be thinking about buying a house probably, my #1 goal is to get a nice car and mod it and road trip somewhere or track day with him before he gets too old, or worse. ❤

My dad passed away in Oct. '23 and this video makes me wish I had listened to him so much more. He wasn't a huge car guy, but he was a huge ham radio guy and medium car guy and as a fairly avid PC user/gamer and car guy there is so much more overlap there than I ever realized back when I was still growing up. It's an odd, bittersweet feeling, not bad but also not good in the euphoric way, it's just a feeling without a name that I know of. I love and appreciate this, thank you Donut Media and Nolan especially, you've brought so much relatability (not a word, should be) to this channel and I'm a lifelong subscriber to your stuff, now I need to catch up on the Past Gas podcast!

One thing I really love about this video is the fact that even though they are restoring a very old car with NEW parts, they did not clean everything, there are still parts of the car that are dirty, parts that are rusty, the engine bay could've been repainted, but they didn't. A much more realistic kind of video for most of us that would have a project like this, rather than videos that in 30 minutes convert a '54 to look like its a 2024 model. I know Donut probably has a decent budget and an endless amount of connections and sponsors for these kinds of things, but it does make me feel like it's still a bunch of guys just doing what they can to make the car run.

As a heavy truck mechanic, anytime I drop a transmission and go through all the trouble I check the rear main seal. If there is any sign that it might start leaking I replace it cuz it's a cheap and quick preventive meassure once all that work has been done. Good job Nollan, that car is gonna be sick
@UnceasingZeus
@UnceasingZeus Ай бұрын
Even if it looked fine, I would've replaced it. The couple dollars spent on the rear main seal vs. the headache of having to re pull the transmission again now because of a leak. Do it right the first time. Now you have to bite the bullet. Sweet ride, though. I would love to see the car get a new motor and a nice wrap to go with them fresh wheels.
@randomguyjustpassingby
@randomguyjustpassingby Ай бұрын
These kinds of antiques have not a conventional full-circle seal, but a seal made of two halves. Not sure about this Imperial, but on the older trucks and 1950-1970 sedans that were made in Soviet times there's a main rear seal made of an asbestos cord (graphite impregnated). This is called "сальниковая набивка", which is literally translated as sealing stuffing, and this is also a pain in the ass. It's fitted into the groove in the block that goes around the rear crank journal, and in the cap that goes beneath it. This type of seal is also used on some Mercedes engines (it's interchangeable with the original in some soviet motors, so we prefer to use it). There's also usually an oil drain thread on the journal that keeps pushing the oil back into the engine when the crank spins. All in all, my point is that replacement of this seal would require a pan to come off, and the crank to be separated from the block, that means at least the rods caps have to be taken off. Sure you can keep the cylinder heads on, but the struggle that waits when the crank will need to be put back (into all of the eight rods at once) is quite serious. Overall it would require a proper engine stand, something like a five pair of fellow mechanics' hands and a couple of hours. But this is not a quick and easy job

But whenever my dad is around and decides to help me, somehow we get things done so quickly, and everything just works. He just knows how to work on cars and he really likes doing it. That's why my dad is who I aspire to be. Awesome video Nolan, I hope we see more of this project!

As a dad of adult sons, the feeling is 100% mutual. No car project, whether theirs or mine, is nearly as fun as it is when we get together and wrench. I depend on my youngest son far more than I probably should, but he always comes through and provides that muscle I need and yes- the know-how I might not have. He's the one that got me interested in rotary engines and I owe the fun of driving my FC RX-7 to him. My oldest is a Jeep guy through and through, and we have spent many hours wrenching to his '01 TJ. Sadly it was killed in a near- headon collision recently (son's ok), but we found a needy '03 TJ and are busy swapping parts over to make a running, driving Wrangler once again. My life is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video!

Rear main seal is under flexplate/flywheel, the trans has to be removed to access.@@liamyates5544
@jaywhite15_AL
@jaywhite15_AL Ай бұрын
@@liamyates5544 If you take the transmission off and torque converter/clutch (on this weird car), then you have a shaft that goes through the whole bottom end of the engine that is called a crankshaft that controls all the pistons poisitions (up and down), oil, and engine balancing. The crankshaft comes out of the back of the engine splined (google search photos), and that's what drives the whole thing. The engine makes power which is then output through the splined crankshaft to the transmission. Well when you have all that taken apart (because this is an OOOOOLD girl), so much weight and old equipment and contact points, you want to make sure after 52 years (fitting since it's a '52 Imperial) that it's not going to leak, so you install a new seal around that output shaft to stop oil from being spit out of the engine directly onto the clutch/torque converter and ground. It's a big rubber/nylon ring seal that goes around the shaft and fits into the back (rear main) of the engine block, but you can't access it without taking all this equipment out of the way. The other end of that shaft comes out of the front of the engine at the bottom and usually has a harmonic balancer or something attached to it, and drives the belts for all the accessories on the front of the engine. For a seal that's not been touched in 52 years it needs replaced or it's going to be brittle or gummy. Depends on what the oil has done to it over time. Anyway, I hope that helps.
@frankfixates6777
@frankfixates6777 Ай бұрын
@@liamyates5544 the rear main seal (referred to by some as RMS) is the seal that installs with the rear cover of the engine where the drive shaft pokes out to mate with the transmission. It is a common place where oil leaks out after some time of vehicle usage. if the engine/trans are ever out of the car, it's a good idea to replace the RMS so that it prevents future oil leakage. That way you mitigate the risk of having to redo all the work to get everything in and out of the car.

Everything about this project resembles everything I went through with my project Chevrolet S10. Unlike Nolan I went old school. I took a 1999 S10, swapped out the 2.2L, replaced it with a 5.7L V8 from a 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe (rebuilt the engine in my engine repair class), I replaced the throttle body and intake manifold for a carbureted setup, took the 4L60E and replaced it with a 700R4 (brand new from GM but it sat for a long time). I rebuilt a rear axle from a ZR2 blazer, took out the governor locker and installed an Eaton Detroit Truetrac differential allowing me to ditch the factory drum brakes for disc brakes without the need for an adapter. I wanted a stronger caliper setup up front without adapter kits also so I replaced my steering knuckles with 2wd Blazer knuckles. There was some smaller finishing touches that I added to the truck when I was done but those items did not take as much work as everything else did.
