One big critical item that many owners don’t know about are those stupid plastic transmission oil cooler line couplings underneath the radiator. If they get damaged or worn out, they’ll break open and drain out all the trans fluid while driving. Once that happens, the transmission is toast.

Plastics have been the downfall of automotive quality for years now. I just pulled out a plastic radiator coupler from my vehicle and replaced it with a brass piece I got from Home Depot for 2 bucks. I'm glad I did it because the plastic one literally crumbled in my hands from just trying to remove it. If that would have blown out on the road my engine would've overheated and goodbye engine.

Ford F 150 6 speed has a major recall. Shift from 6 to 1st at any time. They had a software upgrade as a patch and then a conductor plate to solenoid shorting. The output speed sensor having issue on that conductor plate as well. Valve body to transmission seal leaks and cracks so a funky 1st to 2 upshift and downshift due to the low pressure. All of them, especially ecoboost has the phaser-timing chain start up rattle. Good work around is foot on brake, foot to the floor, crank for 6 to 10 seconds for oil pressure to come up, lift foot to start. Nearly half a million 6 speed conductor plates on backorder. From the first date of sale, a 10-year warranty extension on that part. I could only get the conductor plate by buying a new valve body. Much more Scotty on the Ecoboost shudder issue (hydro lock) and a future class action on 2011 to 2014. I have become an expert on those 3.5.

From my experience with most modern cars (even Toyota's) is you HAVE to change the transmission fluid fairly consistently now - I had the fluid changed in my 2014 Chevy Camaro convertible at around 55k miles from new (and yes it's just a V6 lol), and every 15-20k after that, and at 167k miles today I've never had the transmission rebuilt and it shifts perfect... I did start to get a random hard/sloppy shift at around 145k or so and I dumped a trans fluid additive in it that got good reviews called LubeGard Platinum (~$15 bucks at O'Reillys) and it cleared that up. Had my fluid drained and refilled again about 6k miles ago and used the LubeGard Platinum again just to be safe, I figure after a certain mileage the internals of a transmission will get worn even with good fluid maintenance so an additive is probably good to buy you some time regardless.

In Massachusetts, you never have to worry about if a turbo cant outlast a natural aspirated, they will all rot / rust out big time long before you have mechanical problems with any engine, expecially Ford, Chevy, Jeep. Toyota and Honda the body's don't seem to rust, but they have not drank the koolaid of having turbo technology or ecoboost just yet. You might learn this Scotty in 10 years if you now have a house in Massachusetts instead of TX or TN. LOL

the old 3 speed transmissions always ran well. 4 speed transmission, no problems. Now we have 8, 9, and 10 speed trannys. There is no reason for this other than EPA mileage requirements. And you can't tow much using a CVT. Simpler is always better.

My works 2022 f450 10 SPD is already doing the hard shifting. As soon as tow mode is activated the truck will do the 3-1 drop and clunk hard. Dealership says it's "normal". They just say to disconnect battery and reconnect as it's a learning Tranny. I wish they would just program it to not skip shifts when downshifting

Scotty, you talk a lot about turbos going out and not lasting a long time. what about when used with a diesel, like a 2012 powerstroke, like i have?
@302Mustang13
@302Mustang13 Жыл бұрын
There's is old thinking that turbos fail and turbos in a diesel are much different. The difference is small and the heat of a gas turbo engine isn't that much higher
