It's been 12 years since I had the incredible good fortune of seeing this game we worked so hard on go out into the world, and the fact that reactions like yours are still possible is something that is utterly surreal to me. I can't possibly thank you enough for your stream. This is why we made it. This is why I do what I do in general. I genuinely can't express to how grateful I am to you. Sending love

I’m quite literally in awe that you saw my playthrough! and I’m so so so so happy that watching me experience the game you worked so hard on brought you joy, all these years later!! I played in a bit of a vacuum, despite the game being out for so long, so I really didn’t know what to expect. I hoped it would make my playthrough as pure as possible, leaving all impressions and reactions totally my own. And I think I was definitely rewarded for that. Based on many of the comments I’m seeing, the journey is worth taking multiple times. So I’m excited to play this again and again! Thank you so much for your work ❤️

Some fun extra tidbits if you decide to play again: 1) Every time you see a star falling in game as you go on your journey, it is a real player that just finished the game. 2) The companions are other players. You can actually start and end the whole journey with the same player companion if you stick together. The edge of the screen has a white glow in the direction your buddy is in and the glow will get stronger when they are closer or if they use the louder sound. Sticking close to your buddy does recharge your scarf, so you can fly longer if you hang out together. 3) Every time you finish the game, the game adds more designs to your robe, so you can visually tell if someone has done the journey multiple times before or not. 4) If you find *all* the glowing runes that upgrade your scarf, you get a special white robe.

Journey and this quote from The Good Place always seems as if they were built to be together. "Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height, the way the sunlight refracts as it passes through - and it's there, you can see it, and you know what it is, it's a wave. And then it crashes on the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just... a different way for the water to be for a little while. That's one conception of death for a Buddhist: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's meant to be."

I'll add yet another quote to the Journey bag, a song called "Caravanserai" by Loreena McKennitt that always makes me think of Journey and remember my own playthroughs whenever I hear it. Most of it fits, down to the instrumentation and Loreena's style of singing, but the beginning and the ending of the lyrics are the most fitting of all: "This glancing life is like a morning star, A setting sun, or rolling waves at sea A gentle breeze or lightning in a storm, A dancing dream of all eternity The sand was shimmering in the morning light, And dancing off the dunes so far away The night held music so sweet, so long And there we lay until the break of day (...) What is this life that pulls me far away? What is that home where we cannot reside? What is that quest that pulls me onward? My heart is full when you are by my side Calling, yearning, pulling, home to you."

I try to play Journey at least once every few months. It really is a soul cleanser as you said, especially if you play a lot of competitive games like I do. From what I remember, Journey is supposed to be a metaphor for how life's challenges can be faced alone or with companions, and while your paths may diverge, all that matters was the time spent together. It's truly an incredibly beautiful game. Thank you for sharing your playthrough.

Man, this game........I always cry my eyes out at the end; even thinking about it gets me choked up. It's just so beautiful and majestic and hopeful; everything is coming together at the end to close up the journey. The ascension scene is pure happiness and the track that plays at the moment is the best in the game imo. I think the music plays a major role in conveying the emotions that we feel when we play this game. It sets the tone perfectly for each segment and it's an incredible soundtrack. I still can't believe how the devs who worked on this game realize the idea of a journey in the most beautiful and perfect way. And telling a story without words, but pictures and emotions is always super impressive, which I think gives the uniqueness to games that work that way. So many little, but good ideas were put into this game; I love the shooting star concept, how everytime you see one in the sky, it's actually another person who reached the end and is coming back at the beginning.....for another journey. Super happy you played and discovered this game; I'm glad you had a great experience with it. It's a special gem (and masterpiece, of course). Loved your playthrought, the emotions and investment you had in the story. You don't shy away from feeling your feelings and that makes me happy, because every emotion a piece of media makes us feel, it's part of the experience and it's makes any reaction/playthrought organic and relatable. You talked about a sense of wonder at times during the game and you're absolutely right. I think it is the central theme of the game, how you explore and never know what's awaiting next, but when you get there, it's awestrucking, for good or for bad. Anyway, this was a fun hour and a half-ish. Thank you for playing this game and take care ! ps: sorry for the essay haha ^^'. I can babble about games and music and art all day long and I usually don't wanna leave any detail aside, hence the long text

Please don’t apologize!! This comment actually made me tear up a little lol. I often get a little self conscious about how openly I express my emotions for all the internet to see, since I have been teased about my reactions being too intense before. Thank you for the beautiful stream, it felt like playing for the first time all over again and I'm glad you had such a great time with it! One of my favorite journeys over the years was one I spent most of it alone and had kind of accepted it was going to be a solitary experience this time around until I got to the snow and met someone else. We stayed huddled together throughout, chirping as much as we could, and at the very end at the top of the mountain we drew hearts in the snow for each other! I've gone on many and they've all been wonderful and I love how unique each journey feels. Thanks a lot for playing and sharing this with us!

The first time I played through this game, I was ugly crying and sobbing through the finale so loudly my ex had to check up on me. Getting to watch you go through it for the first time was a real delight. Your reactions were so genuine and you were so gentle and caring on your journey to your ribbon friends. And the other robed characters you saw were actually other players!! Sometimes you can do the journey with them, and it makes it even MORE heartbreaking when you both collapse at the end ... I'm so happy you had fun too! Thanks for sharing this!!

Got to your playthrough by Austin's tweet, and I do not regret sitting and watching it all the way. Journey holds a very special place in my heart and it's the same for so many other players, and you can see why! It's such a raw game, while we stay silent and watching the story unfold. There's really no game like journey - even ABZU, Journey's spiritual successor, isnt quite the same even though it has a lot in common - and which I HIGHLY recommend too. I remember that my first playthrough of Journey I had a companion through 90% of the game, and when we got to the final location, I lost them for a bit while flying towards the mountain. I was so devastated! Even though we knew nothing about each other, I felt their absence. And then!! when I got to the edge of the mountain's light, they were there, waiting for me! I genuinely felt so much joy and relief, and we spent a great deal circling each other and chirping frenetically, because we were so happy to be able to finish it together. I could tell we were there extending our stay even if for a little bit longer, we took a while to pick up and head towards the light together. And we did. I don't remember who they are, but I sometimes wonder about them, and I wish they are doing well after all this time (it's been 10 years). I was smiling all the way through your playthrough, and you thinking you did something wrong that ended up killing the Journeyer really broke my heart. You mentioned you didn't know why you were crying or why you felt so emotional, and I get it. This game really does a number on us, it's so unapologetically poetic, beautiful and tragic all the same - Austin's songwriting and Tina Guo's soloing the cello all the way through our adventure really makes this game what it is, it's legit a work of art. Thank you so much for playing this, and sharing your journey with us! It was really nice to revisit this game

This video appeared randomly in my feed and I had to click and watch your heartfelt reaction because I remember how I felt playing it 11 years ago. My playthrough was special because a white robe found me and basically guided me for the duration of the entire game. The intense beauty of this game isn't just the wonderful music and visuals but the incredible unity you feel when someone is there with you, helping you, encouraging you. My anonymous friend gave me feelings I didn't think a game could make me feel, and like you I was intensely moved by the experience. I'm just sad I couldn't tell them how much the 2 hours they spent with me had meant to me. No other game made me feel that way, but I strongly recommend Spiritfarer to you, it's another very emotional, overwhelmingly emotional and poignant game, but be warned, it does deal with losing loved ones, but in the most beautiful way imaginable. I've never seen your videos before, Jahara, but you seem like a very kind soul and I hope life treats you well.

This game has been designed as a reaction to online games like World of Warcraft which the designers thought didn't bring out only the good in players. So they made this multiplayer journey of life where you can't communicate in normal ways, but just help each other... maybe even without realizing that the companions you meet along the way are real people.

This game was such a beautiful surprise when it came out. When it came out I played it using a beamer on a giant projection screen. It was one of the best gaming experiences I've had. To me the meaning of the game was quite clear, at least my personal interpretation of it. (spoilers sort of): To me it is about the journey in life (ours too). You start taking your first steps, your scarf is small and you are inexperienced. You learn how to move in the world and discover new places beyond the simple desert. Along the way you meet others who are on the same journey, you discover you can help each other get further in life. And there's a bright goal you will always move towards, finding a way to get there. On your journey there will be danger, obstacles, ups and downs. The world will guide you or try to consume you. You talk to your elders, teachers and learn about the world around you through written word and images. You learn to avoid the dangers and your scarf gets longer and longer with experience. Close to the end, as you get older, moving forward gets more difficult. It's cold, you can't move as fluid and fast as you used to. You see others around you that have not made it to the end, but you are determined to keep going, until the struggle to keep going eventually ends, the body can't go no further. But when your body dies, your soul will go on towards that light because you have earned it. Your soul takes a beautiful effortless journey towards your final destination. And when you get there the only place for your soul to go is back to the source, to inhabit a new life and start a new journey.

Subnautica (You'll LOVE it but it is long) 4. Call Of The Sea (OMG YOU WILL TOTALLY LOVE IT! Exactly your type! it's not that short though) 5. Horizon Forbidden West 6. The Forgotten City 7. Guardians of The Galaxy 8. Breathedge 9. Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered 10. Batman Arkham Asylum

Whenever I think about this game, I think about a podcast, the Official Playstation Blogcast episode 99 called "Best of a Generation." In it they talk about their top 10 games of the PS3 generation. The last one on there was Playstation Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, and he actually breaks into tears talking about the game. He said exactly what you said, that one can't help but be moved. He said it reminded him of his grandmother, and he also recounts a story of a girl who was playing while her father was dying and wrote a letter about how it helped her get through the tough times. If you look up the episode, it's toward the end, about 1 hour 40 minutes.

One of my absolute top top favorite games, it's been 10 years since I first played it and it still makes me cry. incredible metaphor for death and one of the few things that makes me feel calm about mortality. I imagine you've already had people clamoring at you to give Outer Wilds (and it's DLC) a spin but if you want another incredibly artful game with a massive emotional gut punch that'll leave you sobbing, please please play Outer Wilds and Echoes Of The Eye (you can beat each in around 10 hours or less depending on how you are with puzzles), it's one of the only games that's managed to meet if not surpass Journey in it's impact on me.

I agree that Outer Wilds is great, but I think that 10 hours for a first playthrough is *very* optimistic. It took me much longer than that. Also just as a tip in case you do end up playing it, I recommend not installing the DLC until you've beaten the base game. Unknowingly stumbling into the DLC is likely going to be confusing, especially since it kind of expects some late-game knowledge.

Your empathy and kindness shone through and you made me cry all over again (in a good way) ❤

Thank you for this reminder. Twelve years ago, Journey was the first indie I've played and my perspective on what a good game was completely changed. Watching you play made me start crying right from the start. The music is the most emotional I've heard and with the lack of talking and easy going vibe, it really pulls at your heart strings. I have used Apotheosis as an alarm sound forever and have been following Austin Wintory ever since. My interpretation of the story was, people were prosperous and lived off the land until something fell from the sky. These scarves seemed to give the people energy and power. Over time they started fighting and war broke out. Everyone died and sand washed over the land. I don't really understand why the people are reincarnated though. Maybe to repent for the war? Like do things right and free what was once imprisoned? It was a pleasure reliving this experience with you. Thank you again.

Girl, I was crying right along with you while watching this. Every time I re-play it myself I ugly-cry all the way through the last act. Thank you for allowing me to vicariously experience this again for the first time 💛 If you explore around the first area of dunes in Journey, there's an easter egg for one of their other games: a Flower growing in the sand 🌻

I haven't touched this game since I played it on PS3 when it came out over a decade ago. I ended up crying with Ya at the end and can't believe it still has that affect on me this many yeas later. Thank you and glad you enjoyed the game!

The first time I played this game, me and another player finished at the same time and walked into the mountain together. Truly a magical experience that I won't soon forget.

I've been watching your Kingdom Hearts playthrough (congrats on finishing KH1!) but when I saw you'd played Journey too I wanted to watch this video as well. It's been a while since I played (I picked it up at the beginning of COVID lockdown stuff) and yes, I found it very emotional. I was really surprised at the end to realize my companions along the way were actually real people, I didn't understand that at the time when I 'met' them in the game but that's a really neat touch by the developers. The music is gorgeous and I was just as terrified as you by the big metal enemies that smack us around if we get caught. The game really lulls you into this sense of security only to surprise you with the sudden tension. And then you think you've made it past them and they show up on the mountain. Heebie jeebies, man. I had forgotten a lot of the specifics of what happened in the game until I watched you going through them but it's just as beautiful as I remembered. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!

Oh yeah, and I saw someone else in here mention it but if you are interested in another beautiful game with a similar idea of no-dialogue and you just figure it out as you go and not super long I'd recommend trying Rime.

At the title screen you said ” that’s just the title screen and i’m already getting a bit choked up” and I laughed a little, because I was already crying in anticipation and by the shear power of Wintory’s soundtrack. This game is like nothing else. I truly recommend watching a few of the “how it was made” videos that you can find here on youtube where the devs and people who worked in the game explain some of the thoughts behind it. The game is for example based on The Hero’s Journey arc, that has certain peaks and valleys in the story/narrative - which is mirrored in the name of the music tracks as well as literally mirrored topologically; Peaks in the narrative are literal peaks to climb in the game and the low points are the valleys you surf down or the pits you drop into. So much thought and love was put into this game. Also I love the fact that the ancestors who guide you on your path are clad in white robes, and if you collect all the glowing glyphs you yourself get to travel as a white-cloaked traveler - signifying that you now are wise and experienced enough to guide younger travelers on their way and make their journey just a little easier. We ourselves travel through life, and I think it’s a privilege to become older, and share what you’ve learned with the next generation, in the hopes that you can bring them comfort, companionship and wisdom. Thank you so much for your reaction. It made me pick up my phone and write to my friend, suggesting that she can come over to me and play this game at my place. She lost her dad very unexpectedly a couple is months back, and I think playing this game could offer her a sense of comfort and catharsis, as it has done for me.

The more I learn about this game the more I love it. It’s amazing what they were able to convey through visuals and soundtrack alone. And how much that resonates with us as the audience, even though we’re conditioned to rely on verbal cues for meaning in typical society. I’m glad this playthrough brought about something positive for you! My condolences to your friend, I wish them healing in this terrible time.
