Yes indeed your lessons are VERY valuable in my watercolor learning curve - thank you for all the time & knowledge you put into teaching! It is appreciated a lot! 🙏❤️

My Essential 7 set came with Pyrrol Orange instead of Pyrrol Scarlet; but, I think I like the Pyrrol Scarlet better, based upon your demonstration here. How many Pyrrol colors have you tried? I only have Pyrrol Orange and what you said about the Pyrrol Scarlet being an intense color, I feel the same way about Pyrrol Orange. A little goes a long way. I can mix the Pyrrol Orange with the Quinacridone Rose and get a really nice red some where in between warm and cool. If I mix it with New Gamboge (the single pigment version), it makes a very nice orange. If I mix it with Hansa Yellow Medium, the orange is more muted. Are you familiar with Oto Kano? She has done some really great videos on color and color comparisons.

OF COURSE I want a mixing video! Endless possibilities, and inspiring to watch someone with knowledge doing it. And yes please, review M. Graham and Mijello -- I've just begun playing with them color by color and would love having you next to me with those.

That’s a gorgeous red. I’ve always used cadmium red because the first pro set I bought was the standard 12 half pan from Schmincke and I haven’t deviated much since then although DS only has cad red med. I still only use that. I tried vermillion for fun but his is a gorgeous red and I’ll have to try it some time.

Yasmine S. That is true. I learned that trying it out. Love the color but still stick to my core cadmium red in my regular palette.
@raosprid6 жыл бұрын
That's actually not true. Many of the vermilion hues on the market are far too orange. Genuine vermilion (PR106) is most comparable to a cadmium scarlet or cadmium red light, or a cadmium red for the deeper shades. Slightly more orange examples were sometimes available, but those were the exception, not the rule. www.webexhibits.org/pigments/indiv/overview/vermilion.html www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterr.html#PR106

raosprid well I took it to mean it was much lighter. The vermillion I tried was much lighter than the cadmium red I was using. It also just looked more orange to me. I just tried it out- I didn’t do much research into the pigment information. I pretty much just stick to cad red, like I said.

raosprid thanks for the info! I never read about the information. I just buy tubes and try them out. Good to know though. 👍

I’m interested in exactly what pigments you would choose if you were setting up a palette to closely approximate the traditional color wheel. Curious to try this myself...not sure how to go about it
@LironYan6 жыл бұрын
I would go with something similar to Daniel Smith's Essentials set (: amzn.to/2LZ0tyP You don't have to get this set. But you can see the exact paints included there, and maybe even get them from different brands.

Consider trying Daniel Smith Transparent Pyrrol Orange, not to be confused with just Pyrrol Orange, before you decide to replenish this color. It's rich and lush, single pigment color - I haven't yet found anything like it in any other brand!!

Agree! Transparent Pyrrol Orange is absolutelyGORGEOUS! it’s more of a Cadmium light red than orange.......I was introduced to,it on a Paul Wang workshops..and recommend it to all my friends!

Imo It's not the same. I have all 3. This color is special. It's almost indistinguishable from mayan orange in hue but it's bright and smooth like no other color. I have about 90 tubes of daniel Smith and I want more of pyrrol scarlet too. I think trans. Pyrrol orange absolutely has it's place especially in mixing and it's beautiful but very different.

Love this color. I have 4 pyrroles in my palette and love them. Understanding Pyrrole Scarlet x Phthalo Blue mixing greys is a case of using a CMY reference. Take a look on Scott Naismith works.

Thanks. I am curious if it makes a true neutral gray with PG7, the way that PR254 does.

Hmm, it's pretty close to neutral, I would say. Maybe has a bit of "brown" in it.

I would say that Daniel Smith, SAA, W&N and Schmincke are all my favorites. It’s really hard to compare them all. SAA really surprised me, they make fantastic paints. If I’d have been from the UK that would be all I buy 😁

Hi Liron, I m following your reviews, heres a sneaky trick. because Daniel Smith paints are so expensive, before you consider becoming a movie star, or selling your car, heres a trick! when youv think the tube is empty, take a flat raizor or stecil knife and slice it down the middle the long way. try not to slice your finger or toes. and there should be enough paint left to make amother masterpice!

Second time watching this as have a Cadmium red light but don’t like color (only used one brand). Oranges are interesting colors & one miss “discontinued” was Q. Burnt orange. Interesting fact is our watercolors are “dictated” by the auto industry & guess not many ppl want that color car 🧐. Ty.

You are saying that Pyrrol Scarlet has a bit of yellow in it, and that the phthalo blue also has a bit of yellow in it. I understand that the red is a warm red and that the blue is a cool (greenish) blue, but both Pyrrol Scarlet and Phthalo Blue are single pigment colors. They do not contain any yellow. Besides that I would like to add that I love Pyroll Scarlet. Unfortunately your camera is not picking up the vibrancy of the colors. The mix with Hansa Yellow medium is dynamite. In real life these two colors are hotter than the sun.
@LironYan2 жыл бұрын
Haha that is true! I since updated the camera and it hopefully shows colors better now 😁 As for them being single pigment - that is true. And I can’t tell you I understand the optics & science fully. Same goes for the pigment production process. However - that single pigment, VISUALLY, contains multiple colors. And this is apparent by the way the different colors mix. This is why a cool red and a warm blue tend to create more muted combinations / purples. And cool blues + warm reds tend to create cleaner purples. Even when only single pigments are involved (: If anyone knows more about why this happens - feel free to correct me. I studied physics and optics in high school but don’t remember much, so I may be completely wrong on this 😅
@Thestripper12 жыл бұрын
@@LironYan Hi Liron. This is very interresting because I experience the opposite! Maybe this is because some people refer to a greenish-blue as a cool blue, while others say that a violet-blue is a cool blue. These are just different denominations of course, but it can make things confusing when talking about color temperature. I think of it as a warm blue is leaning towards red and a cool blue leans towards green. In the case you mention with mixing purple, I would say that a cool red (bluish-red) and a warm blue (redish-blue) will mix the cleaner and more vibrant violet or purple. A warm red (yellowish red) and a cool blue (greenish blue) will be more muted and brown since they are more opposite each other on the color wheel, they will tend to neutralize each other. What are your thoughts on this? [Edit] I re read your post and understand what you mean now. You were mixing a warm red in both occasions. That makes total sense!
