One thing not really covered is that while the Emperors physical body is actually dying he has become the most powerful being in the warp. He alone holds all four chaos gods at bay and the worship he receives has empowered him to the point that he actually is becoming the God they imagine him to be. To what extent is unclear but make no mistake, the fact that he can hold off all four chaos gods is just the tiniest sliver of hope for humanity for the grim dark Warhammer universe.
@OldWestGunslinger-vs9mxАй бұрын
You can't tell me that becoming a god wasn't part of the Emperor's plan. Maybe he did want to originally deprive the Chaos Gods of believers, but when he realized that he couldn't do it, he decided that the only other option was to become the God Emperor who is more powerful than the Chaos Gods.

Bricky isn't quite accurate on a lot of this, but it is a condensed and crude version that serves as an introduction. He does propagate a lot of misconceptions in the lore by accident though. For example the Webway is a series of tunnels through the skin that seperates the Warp from Reality, close enough to the Warp to bend time/reality but close enough to reality to be controllable, and it was created by the Old Ones and the Eldar inherited it.

The whole 40K tabletop game hobby gets prohibitively expensive fast. That said the videogames are also a viable option. Space Marine 2 which came out a few days ago, gives a particularly epic introduction to the universe with the added eye candy of modern graphics. The first one dates back to the Xbox 360 era so its far easier to run and its very cheap on PC. (They are both good action games) As you say in the video its a very interesting universe.
@freelancerthe2561Ай бұрын
I think the worst and best part about current day 40k is that there is shockingly poor cohesion in terms of "Official" media. It makes delving into official canon an absolute nightmare, and offers no good way to filter or section out particular areas of interest to you. But on the other hand, this has created a massive community knowledge base that side steps the majority of "modern canon" problems seen other IPs that have highly centralized sources of information (see most video games). The community knowledge angle is also the reason the community itself is so open to outsiders, as theres an understanding a new person would not be able to navigate the massive catalog of available (and unavailable) information, without some kind of help. I have way more fun talking about and referencing the setting then I do playing any of the games.
@jw70467Ай бұрын
Honestly, buy the models if you like the assemble and paint them. If you play mainline GW games, I pity you. The games systems are just plain BAD. There's so many better options out there that cost less money, require less time to play a game, and don't involve you sitting idly by during your opponents turn for much of the game. I do have a nostalgic affection for old necromunda and mordheim, but for modern rank and flank, Conquest: The Last of Arguments of Kings or Mantic's Kings of War is better. For Sci-fi skirmish, almost everything is better than kill team, and for massive sci-fi battles, there's so many better systems.

The ancestors of the orcs in the Warhammer 40,000 universe were the "krork". The Krork are an ancient warrior race created during the war between the ancient and mysterious race Necrontyr and the Old Ones. The Old Ones, who were very ancient beings with advanced psionic abilities, created the krork through genetic engineering to use them as a fighting force against the Necrcrontyrs and the C'tan gods. The Krork were much more organized and advanced than the later orc race, and probably larger. Over time, however, the Krork civilisation declined and their descendants, the Orcs, emerged as a more primitive, chaotic and aggressive race in the galaxy. The Orcs are the degenerate descendants of the Krork, who have lost all the advanced technology and social structures of the ancient race, but retain the aggression and belligerence. This universe hides a lot of extra info not as simple as it is described .
@ScarabswarmАй бұрын
Krork were bigger and smarter, and Orks have an ingrained imperative to follow the biggest Ork. As Orks fight, they grow. As they grow, they get smarter... Have we basically been fighting Krork children all this time? Like, the Orks aren't a degeneration of the Krork, but just immature? And they just never live long enough to get bast their teen growing pains of starting a Waaagh and making themselves a target for assassination?
@AdeptusAstartes9011Ай бұрын
@@Scarabswarm It is also possible that if they had been given enough time they could have adapted or Krork could have evolved, but unfortunately there is very little surviving information about them. But one theory is that their society, with their once formidable power and knowledge, has simply degenerated into a dumb society, question why, could be viruses or necrons or just a DNA mutation. But many agree that they would be bigger and stronger than an astronaut, with technology beyond the Empire's total power . Personally, I am very curious to see if any story or artifacts will appear in the future that will allow us to know them better. But yes you may be right and they are fighting with Krork children but who knows what twist there will be.

Bricky got some of it wrong. Cybernetic Revolt ends and then The Age of Strife started by the Warpstorms which is the Eldars debauchery's side effect. This continues few thousand years, The Emperor starts the Unification Wars on Terra. After Terra's unification Slaanesh is born and that clears the Warpstorms. Clearing of the Warpstorms is the start of the Great Crusade. Bricky really did Malcador dirty by just brushing as "someone else taking control of the Throne". Malcador he was The Emperor's best friend that knew everything about him and acted as Regent in his absence and "Uncle" of the Primarchs. He was the man who had his explicit trust. Pretty sure he was the one who convinced The Emperor to become The Emperor. Malcador was also the 3rd strongest psyker of the Imperium. Magnus was supposed to be the contingency plan so Malcador wouldn't have to control the Throne in The Emperor's absence. The Emperor uses his psychic powers to alter peoples perception of him. For example all the "fan art" you see is the artist's perception of the Emperor, pretty meta. If you read enough Warhammer 40k books you notice how the Emperor talks and behaves as the person he is speaking to him would expect of him. Like their ideal version of him. The Emperor is a plot device and he should, in my opinion, stay mysterious and unknown.

The Warp is a reflection of the collective psychic energy of the universe. If everyone gets PTSD from constant war, it makes the psychic energy go pretty chaotic.

Yes, we are vague and careful about the lore until we see real interest. We don't want people who only care about the memes without knowing anything about their origin... and we want to keep the 'culture war'/DEI crowd out of it. You could call that gatekeeping, I guess, but it's more a protective reflex at this point, developed over more than 30 years of batteling endless hordes of heretics trying to sell it out or to change it in ways that just don't fit. If someone shows real interest and wants to learn, indeed, welcome and may the Emperor guide you!

Some gatekeeping is necessary. In 40k we have to keep the nazis out as well. While the world of 40k is not a fair one, by theme and design, and so attempts to equalize it with modern sensibilities run smack into significant lore issues and undermine the intended horror of the setting; it's the neonazis who paint their SS imperial guard armies, or who play eldar so they can call their black opponents Mon'keigh over and over who cause _actual_ problems. There are immature edgy people who either seek to cause offense on purpose while using the fandom as a shield to avoid criticism; or who are simply too dense to realize that _everyone_ in 40k is the bad guy, and unironically identify with messages that are meant to be mocking of their position. It's like the people who don't get that Starship Troopers is meant to be a satire, and miss all the digs at their beliefs. Movie: "A murderer was caught this morning and tried today. *Cut to judge: 'Guilty'. Execution tonight at 7, all net, all channels." Oblivious authoritarian viewer: "That's how it should be!" Everyone else: 🤦 "Where do I even begin?" Every fandom wants to preserve what they view as good about their passion, and resist what they feel may harm it. 40k has a very wide appeal, which leads to a lot of interest in it, and a lot of competing interests in what direction it should go. From the outside, that makes things dense and chaotic, where backlash is hard to predict in scale but almost guaranteed to happen in every case to some degree. From the inside it requires you to decide what you actually care about, and tune out the rest.

@@Scarabswarm I don't know what kind of meta you are playing in, but in the eldar example, I'm unaware of a single TO or FLGS who would tolerate that nonsense. Also, there's a really easy solution. You pack up your army and don't play them. Period. It is really easy. The difference between this other group you are trying to gatekeep out are that they are morons who are antisocial in person. The other group don't often participate at all in the hobby, and are mostly keyboard warriors that stupid people follow (and stupid companies bend the knee to)

@@Scarabswarm Exactly, your Starship Troopers comparison nails it. The moment politics and ideology (regardless wether left, right, centrist, religious, whatever) overtake, common sense and human decency dies and the fun gets sucked out of things! Never feed the trolls, especially not IRL!

The best explanation of the warp I use. "Everyone has their demons" Now take that literally and on a galactic scale.

whats crazy is that all the stuff that happened with the eldar has occured in real life. The greeks, the romans, and now america. All the once great empires became too great and "carnalized" themselves in swarch of the next thing to do.

No Gatekeeping mate. It's always been there. In the shadows. Ten feet fucking tall . Happy to see a new fan. ❤

Big Dog, I so enjoyed, watching your reaction, I hadda sub. And he's giving you an accurate synopsis, albeit it's the readers digest version. Basically, he's hitting the highlights. Because there is so much more, your not hearing here. I was introduced to this game, in my early 20's. And much like Cavill, I was instantly hooked. But back then, it wasn't played in a video game. You played on a tabletop, and brought your painted miniatures with you, along with some paper, a pencil with an eraser, and your own dice. (Lots of dice) Oh how the times have changed. And now the cats out of the bag. We can't hide this no more. No hiding is the wrong word. I heard you refer to it, as Gatekeeping. Well, even that's not really right, cause in all honesty, we just didn't talk about it. So it was kinda more really like Fight Club. Most people just totally ignored it, because they thought it just, a bunch of nerds, doing nerdy shit. So it kinda hid in plain sight. But you should definitely take the time, especially now, why it's a hot topic, to soak up as much as you can, of the material that's all over KZbin. Giving you different background, detail information, on the Primarchs, the many different Chapters of Space Marines, and stand out Space Marines, that serve them. I promise you will not be disappointed, that you did. Because the more you learn, the more you want to know about it. So, the gates open, come in sit down, make yourself comfortable, were all just servants of our chosen factions here. Because not everyone sides with the Imperium. But we treat each other with respect, and as equals. Cause we're all here really, for just one thing. To have fun, and just, forget about life's bs, for just a little while..! Oh by the way, I mentioned getting hooked in my 20's. I'm in my late 50's now...

I never watched Brickys intro to 40k but I have to admit that was a very good and efficient summary in a relatively short time.

I played Space Marine 2, and have been fascinated by the depth and breadth of lore making up the franchise ever since. I have not played any tabletop games, but I do want to eventually try my hand at the warhammer tabletops, once I have the time and money to invest in the figures, painting, and learning the rules etc. It has quickly become a favorite subject to learn about for me.
