Yes this!! My local library has a delivery service that brings me physical books. When I have a book that people are waiting for, I send them back by the due date. If no one's waiting, I keep them until I feel like reading them, since they automatically renew. I've had a stack of books since August, lmao.

On TikTok I see lots of videos where the person recording asks someone at the bookstore for recommendations. “What’s a book you wish you could read for the first time again?” Stuff like that. Ask the librarians those kinds of prompts! That could be fun

I work at the library so books just stick to me as I go past. Like lint. One of my co-workers has 100 books out and 200 on hold. It's a job hazard.
@tareegibson93514 күн бұрын
Thank you for the chortle this gave me. As a librarian, what is your stance on renewals when people are waiting?
@nanimaonovi25284 күн бұрын
@tareegibson9351 we do have the power to override a hold and give extensions. I carefully check the number of copies we have before making that call. If it's a 12 year old reading a big book that we have 50 copies of I just renew and expect our digital library do some of the heavy lifting. If it's a pattern I talk to the patron about wish lists and how to manage their check outs better. One person I talked to actually had a brain injury so always lead with empathy and ask patrons about their situation.

more and more, I've been using my library for newer books that I want to read but I'm not sure I'm going to LOVE. you know- those 3 & 4- star books where if you buy it, you read it and enjoy it exactly once, it gathers dust for a while, and then you finally unhaul once you are honest with yourself you're never going to re-read. I've found some great reads that way, and it's massively curbed my materialistic book-buying in general. Now I only buy the occasional special edition or hard copy of 5 star books and series that I KNOW I want to keep around for a good long while.

The transportation culture in the UK seems so different compared to the US! I feel like more people than not have a car in the US and at least a driver's license with the goal of getting a car. Is it less common in the UK and public transportation/walking is the norm? Things are so spread out in the US that walking/public transportation is impractical or flat out not possible in the majority of the country, minus big metropolitan areas.
