3:55 - 1. Fold a piece of paper in half 2. Cut out your shape so the middle ends up being on the fold 3. Unfold paper 4. Trace it onto the wood. 5. Cut out the wood and notice that both sides are exactly the same. It's just like cutting out those chains of paper people holding hands or when you cut out a paper snowflake. But hopefully you figure that out in a second.

I came here to say this as well. The snowflake approach.

The best use I've found for smaller foam cast-offs is rubble filler. Either as the larger pieces of rubble, or as filler for large piles of rubble. It occurs to me that, using a rattle can on such a big sci-fi board does have a benefit. If you did miss a spot with the mod podge base coat, and the spray can does damage the foam, you can always paint the area with some toxic neon coloration and call it a "toxic spill" or an "acid weapon", or even "nanomachine damage."
@dicedrinksanddadjokesКүн бұрын
I'm definitely going to steal that toxic spill idea - thanks for the suggestion!

This was great! A dream board! You questioned yourself, there... But I really think you did the right thing by preparing the craters, and after, laying the slabs. No way it would have looked this good, otherwise! Something you can do to, to cut a corner and gain some realism in the future, is mixing all the sand, stones, and pebbles into a single shallow container (to minimize decantation) and apply it all at once. Looks way more natural and is more time efficient that way. I like to mix some 3d-printed skulls, kitty litter, cork, micro-crystals, myca, flat flakes, small print support struts... and still looking for something that would resemble ammo shells, personally. But I use that for basing. You have really inspired me to try my own board!
@dicedrinksanddadjokes16 сағат бұрын
That’s awesome dude, great shout with the rubble mix. I did a similar think for basing materials. The issue I found with it when doing terrain is that the finer materials tend to sink to the bottom. Yeah shell casings would be cool!
@Virakotxa16 сағат бұрын
@dicedrinksanddadjokes Cheers. Yeah, that's the decantation issue I ment... Big and lightweight rubble comes to the top, and all the fine sand ends at the bottom. So you pour it first on a shallow container, like a lid, and it shuffles the materials to dust from there. Another little suggestion is give a try to dry pigments. Love AK Interactive's, but ground-up dry pastels work as well. They need to be fixed with some alcohol dusting, (which dulls the effect) or they forever stain... But it can add so much realism and atmosphere to anything, with little time and effortless. Sorry! Thinking out loud... I should be getting a foam-cutter, not giving tips! 🤪

A great video and I really like your work of modularity. I might have to use a lot of your board making techniques and the stencil of the sections that join to make my 44x60 size table (obviously changing it to 4x board sections instead of 6) and have the joining sections being gothic tiles instead of joint creators. That way I can put buildings on the table instead of just scatter terrain. What do you think?

15:00 - mix in some plaster and sand into your mix and you'll save your self having to pour the tile grout everywhere. You can also add in acrylic calking to the paint (as long as it's all acrylic paints - other paints might make it split) and this will thicken up the end result and give a good hard coat to the polystyrene while also filling holes, especially when you have PVA in there too. Add more water to the mix to keep it from getting too thick.
