I recently took a flight between Orange County and Oakland. And rather than fly a normal airline, I decided to give #JSX a shot. JSX is a semi-private airline that promotes a "private jet like experience at normal economy prices". Unfortunately, my experience wasn't quite as advertised. Let me explain...

Coby Explanes Also most of JSX fleets are the ERJ-135. These aircraft are becoming more difficult to come by for JSX so they pull old ERJ-145s which are a little larger. You notice your airplane had a slightly different paint job, that’s because (as you said) it was a refurbished Chautauqua Airlines plane that used to fly for Delta Connection. The 145’s are slightly longer than the 135’s but JSX is not allowed to have more than 30 seats for their regulatory classification, hence the empty space and why your airplane had a regional jet feel, because that’s exactly what it was before JSX acquired it. I flown them a few times and I’ve only come across these airplanes twice.

I’m guessing it has more to do with trim issues on the load sheet. Many E135 operators need to carry ballast (at cost) to get into the takeoff envelope. It also removes the weight of the seats. Leisure type flights usually have more baggage and thus no ballast required.

You flew a scheduled commercial charter flight, there was nothing at all private about it. If the pilots don't depart when you tell them to you haven't flown private. In my opinion, $89 was a very good price for what you experienced.

@dfdla

@@mrpielover615 In this situation, semi-private is like semi-pregnant. A misnomer. Semi-private is a term somebody used to pretend they chartered a private plane One of the hassles of flying commercial is the dead time waiting for the scheduled departure. When you truly fly private, as I have, you tell the pilots when you are ready to go and they immediately initiate the departure. And you don't have a bunch of strangers sitting around you. For $89 he got good value but nothing like the experience of flying private. For about $1,500 more he could have truly chartered a small private jet for a 1 hour flight. His $89 does not come close to covering the fuel burn for a 1 hour flight on a small private jet, which is why he got no privacy and had to fly with 29 others on a time schedule set by somebody else. This guy flew on a regularly scheduled commercial charter flight and there was nothing private about it.
@larryscott3982
@larryscott3982 4 жыл бұрын
Semi private is sort of the description. It’s departing from the charter facility without the myriad of passengers of dozen airlines. So, the terminal alone is justification, and 30 seats, 36” spacing, on a Jet is easily worth 30 bux. Adding an hour plus to survive the big terminal is reason enough to not fly standard part 121 commercial.

I’ll say this, I work with jsx, I’m a line service technician at KCCR, it’s the smallest airport that jsx operates too, I can definitely agree with some of the things you said, a lot of the planes are old and were ex American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express E135s. I’ve never actually flown on it but I have been in and out of the planes a lot and they are fairly nice. I think it’s unfortunate that you had to experience that aircraft, before COVID hit jsx had just received many new aircraft and due to Phoenix opening up and new routes starting up, they didn’t really have the time to refurbish new aircraft to meet the demand of flights, I can tell you that pretty much every aircraft has no overhead bins and in this video that is the first time I’ve ever seen a plane of theirs have overhead bins and I’ve worked with them for over a year and half. Also the aircraft you flew on was a E145, jsx is majority E135s but they do have a fair amount of E145s and that was one of them and that extra space in the back is only in the E145s, I would definitely recommend trying them again, just because I think it was really down to that one plane and not overall

I wonder if they'd been able to fly out of Centennial instead of Broomfield, I'd probably try to get a part time job - I like the concept - it's also funny how many peons like me think "private jets" have a "better experience" : that the airports are plush and luxurious, that people don't walk outside to get on a plane. Like that's a normal private airport - that's literally what private flights are - the jet is fancy but most of the rest has something to be desired, but that's because you don't spend tons of time in the airport - they fly private because their time is valuable

I have flown JSX several times and have never been disappointed. Not having to show up at the airport 2 hours early, fast and easy boarding and speedy luggage retrieval, right as you exit the plane. It looks like you made it onto an E145 that had not yet gone through interior refurbishment. They were very unusual birds for a few months, but I believe they have all since been either refurbished or removed from service to undergo refurbishment, so none of them are flying in that configuration anymore. The entire active fleet has no overhead bins, new carpet and upholstery, and a minimum of 36" of pitch at every seat. The E145s also recently underwent a seat realignment to standardize the exit at row 7 across the whole fleet (it was previously row 8 on the 145s), which has provided even more seat pitch for each row on these aircraft while reducing the giant empty gap at the back of the cabin. As another commenter pointed out, there are 30 seats because that is what FAA Part 135 permits. At 31 seats they would have to operate under Part 121, and that would force them to use standard passenger terminals, which would eliminate a large part of their competitive advantage. It is not, however, a question of flight attendants. Aircraft with 20-50 seats only require one flight attendant. And a ratio of 30:1 is significantly better than what you get on other carriers, who are generally trying to get as close to 50:1 as possible. Finally, there are two errors here. JSX does not advertise WiFi currently available onboard because it isn't. WiFi is provided free of charge in the lounges, not onboard the aircraft. They previously offered inflight SMS messaging, but that product didn't work well and was slated for replacement with true WiFi. That project has hit a couple of roadblocks, including one change of vendor, but it's finally getting off the ground, and the first aircraft has now received onboard WiFi equipment for testing. If all goes well, additional aircraft will begin to follow later this summer, and the website says it will be available in 2020 (presumably fleet-wide). The other is that JSX stopped using the "semi-private" verbiage when they rebranded from JetSuiteX to JSX last year. Customers found it confusing, particularly with sister company JetSuite offering actual private jet service. It's currently described as a "hop on jet service," and based on your impressions of check-in and boarding, I'd say that's pretty accurate. The biggest value add here is time which, when coupled with space, makes for a pretty compelling product.

4:14- What you're talking about is what pilots call "short field takeoff". It's an interesting experience. United did this with an A319 during Xmas season 2003. Although that's a MUCH larger plane, I was amazed how quickly we were aloft. Everyone should fly out of a tiny airport like John Wayne at least once in their lifetime to experience it. It's not like anything you've ever felt or witnessed. I was shocked how loud the engines could get when the pilot held the brakes and opened up the throttle. That tiny plane leaped off the ground like a scalded cat! The one tradeoff is that this being California, you are likely to run into nasty storms as you head for SFO. The storm was brutal and tossed the A319 around like a toy. Fortunately for me, growing up with a love for roller coasters helped prep my stomach for this.

I Spot at Concord airport which they fly into. Most of their jets are old United/Continental Embraer e135's. They have a few e145's one of which came from Delta. They were flying the recently acquired planes for a few weeks until they refitted them with the advertised leather seats, nice lavs, etc. If you have any questions, I know a lot about this particular airline and I alsop know a few people who work for it as well that I can get answers to.

I was supposed to fly a Singapore Airlines 777 nonstop from San Francisco to Hong Kong this month’s but my buddy there was forced to postpone his wedding until January. I’m hoping to do Ethiopia in October but at this point even Delta from Alabama where I live over to Atlanta (22 minutes in the air) sounds intrepid! Love your channel and content, Coby. One year I had an emergency situation where I needed to fly to Kosovo. A colleague of mine directed me to a Private Jet company that had empty leg flights. Just by luck the plane was being repositioned to Kosovo. It was a Bombardier Global Express jet. I was smothered in luxury on that aircraft. It spoiled me rotten. I eventually stopped flying Commercial airlines and would grab an Empty leg flight to the destination where I was going or close to it. Imagine you alone on a luxurious jet being pampered and spoiled at a FIRST CLASS FLIGHT PRICE. Then I decided to join a PRIVATE JET CARD ASSOCIATION. Now I fly private with my family and some friends. No annoying passengers to content with. And guess what, the majority of the Private jets are pet friendly! Which means no Cargo Holes for my dogs. I know that you may say that most people can't afford it. That's when you pool your resources buy a group membership in a private jet ASSOCIATION. But I do get where you are coming from in your video. 👍

everyone says "how disappointing" but you pay no where near private prices, drive right up to the airport, don't pay to park your car for a week, short security, complain about lack of baggage overhead space but say there 2 free checked bags per person, straight to your bag and an uber at the other end - seems you wished you'd spent $5k on your flight, so you could have the "real experience" book a netjet flight for you and some friends and tell me how great it was then tell me how you could've flown commercial for 2 years for the same price

Interesting. The steep take off is like in London City airport which is slap bang in the city. So sorry it was a disappointing experience. It is always a frustrating experience for the customer when faced with something other than what is propagated by the company. JSX should only operate the aircraft that have already been refurbished, the Embraer 135 / 145 jets, are not known for their comfort since they are small aircraft designed for regional operation. JSX does not hide that it is a low-cost operator and uses old aircraft. The attraction of JSX is precisely the gain of overtime to the passenger, yes it is worth paying a little more if you have. I believe JSX could improve the comfort and look of the reception and waiting facilities for the customer. I do not know if it is feasible, but I could offer a transfer service for "JSX executive" vehicles in partnership, through the collection of an additional fee for those who are interested.

So this airplane is actually an ERJ-145 that was owned by ADI Aerodynamics then California Pacific. Being a 145 they had to remove the seats to get to their 30pax limit and being owned by California Pacific probably is the reason for the “regional jet feel” over the advertised JSX product
@xyzaero

JSX is just another "virtual airline". The are a Part 380 Public Carter operation, wich means that you charter a single seat on their airplane and don't buy an actual ticket like on a "normal" airline. The fact, that they are not an airline makes it possible to use private FBOs (terminals) and circumnavigate the TSA checks, wich might seem convenient, but also remember, that nobody on board is properly safety checked. JSX also does not operate any airplanes on their own. JSX does not own or operate a single airplane. The planes are operated by Delux Public Charter LLC.

I remember a pilot had made a comment about a noise abatement move they had to do at a particular airport. It required a tighter turn in to the airport. He said that's how planes should be flown. It was based on his past experience as a fighter pilot. That pilot would probably like this type of take off done in this video.

I was hoping you got to go on a ride on the refurbished aircraft. It would have been nice to hear your thoughts on one of those. I think you would have been more pleased with your experience on one with the upgraded interior, as they're really well done inside by the awesome team at NUGI. The company I worked for north of London, Ontario, Canada did those upgrades, and I'm lucky enough to have been paid to test in-flight the Gogo wifi and electrical outlets we installed onboard. The 135 really does accelerate like a rocket and would make an excellent private jet experience. Hopefully next time you catch a flight with them it'll be the shiny refurbed aircraft. P.S if you do go on a flight on one. Watch your head on the over wing exit sign. I can't tell you how many times I've smashed my noggin on it when all the seats were out.

Interesting how they were using this plane without the refurbished interior. The advertised videos has been my experience and I’ve flown JSX quite a bit. The terminals, planes and onboard service has all been great but my gripes have always been with the ground CSRs. I’m not sure if they’re actual JSX employees or contracted by the FBOs they utilize but I’ve gotten attitude numerous times or have just stood there unacknowledged waiting to be helped. For how short the routes are, I think they’re priced incredibly when ~100. Anything more than that on a CA-CA route is a bit much....but that’s my somewhat experienced opinion. The “adult” beverage options are great, the snacks are a plus. Can’t wait for this former RJ to be refurbed If it hasn’t already. Good video!

If it weren't for the situation with Covid and a worsening recession, I would have said that a service like this would be very interesting and might find success. With increase in Point to Point travel and an increase in domestic flights, the low cost Airlines like SouthWest, Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue etc. finding it more difficult to differentiate themselves, I could see consumers being willing to pay a slight Premium over a low cost fare to have a relaxed and quick security check in where you can arrive much less than an hour before hand and just pretty much hop on the plane, and if it had been a refurbished Plane, nice, sleek and clean with only 30 passengers giving it a semi- private feel. It all sounds great. Sucks there had to be a pandemic..

I do think smaller planes are the future of aviation. They burn less fuel and are more efficient and the less seats make room for extra flights and than they can operate at higher cost tickets in the more frequent hours there fore the less frequent flights will have cheaper tickets. Planes like the Embraer e2 will rule the national lines and the a320 Neo for transatlantic flights.
