Racheal Kaur is a frequent flyer. But she doesn't fly for work. The Malaysian flies to work in Kuala Lumpur, five days a week, from her home in Penang around 300 kilometres away.

She wakes up at 4am and only reaches home at 7:30pm. She only has about 1 hour to spend with her family before she needs to get ready for bed. I can't imagine living life like this, and I feel privileged not having to go through that.

Life is fair I guess. I know a stay-at-home mom who apparently has all the time in the world for her family but is a lazy piece of sh*t who doesn't cook, doesn't clean, never sit with her kids for homework or a casual interaction of emotional connection & support. All she does on a daily basis is send the kids to school & then hang around with friends at the mall. Tapau dinner OTW home, had all the family members eat separately at their own favourite spaces & sway the night away with her phone on social media. That being said, I can assure you that being pathetic & ignorant is a choice.

there are a few crucial factors here that makes it work for her unique situation - the staff price for flights, the location of her office after she lands, and instead of driving in stressful conditions for the same amount of time, she can rest a bit during the journey. Best part is that she is home every night - we cannot take this part for granted.

Actually it's more reasonable for her. People working KL spend 1 - 2 hours just to travel to office. Petrol and parking will definitely cost around RM20-RM30 daily. So, for RM50/ daily for a return flight with some offset and mutual understanding with her employer she actually have a great deal here. I believe she's also an asset to the company that's why they are ok with this arrangement, But not everyone can live like her. Waking up daily at 4am and driving to airport and managing her family. Kudos to her 👍🏻

I guess it is a good arrangement for her. Just the office hours seem long. Here in Austria people work 37.5 hours/week and get 5 weeks paid vacation plus a lot of public holidays off. The trip itself is not bad, if I think I'd have to work in Phnom Penh, I'd take 45 mins Tuktuk for 5 bucks one way... (living there part-time)

The footprint of a 6-seated vehicle is way higher than a commercial plane with hundreds of passengers. If I assumed AA staff policy correctly, she only got to board the plane if that's an empty seat due to unsold or failed check-in, because she mentioned that it was a little tricky during peak seasons as customers were prioritise. If that's the case and I understood her correctly, practically she did not contribute to extra carbon footprint because the plane will fly anyway with or without her. This is because the carbon footprint per plane passenger has reduced. If she were to stay in KL, an under 1 hour 30 mins trip by car for a driver-only sedan to Sepang would be quite high.

I really don't see the logic in doing this. Back in early 2000s, I had a colleague whose department is only in HQ, however since she is from Ipoh, she was given a desk in Ipoh branch. Almost all our work are done through the computer and since Ipoh branch is connected to the HQ servers, this was possible. Caring employer. I'm sure AA can do the same by getting her a desk in AA Penang with HQ server connectivity for her finance tasks. It's 2025. Perhaps, someone should inform this hardworking lady that there is an alternative to flying daily.

@@rachmadsuhartonoit takes more fuel to fly more weight. Say she hypothetically weighed 120lbs and worked 250 days per year, that’s 30,000lbs more on flight per year then would otherwise be without her. Lighter weight flights = slightly less fuel per flight, which can add up. (Edit: I realized that twice a day x 250 workdays x 120lbs = more like 60,000lbs, excuse me lol.) Not saying her footprint is as bad as certain infamous celebrity private jet users let alone most large companies or anything, just saying this lifestyle is not to be idealized or normalized imo. Of course there are things that produce more then ~60,000lbs flown per year (someone is going through all the comments talking about flown in foreign produce) but the “what about isms”/straw man arguments are missing the point: having a local job to home would potentially (I’m not her of course!) improve family time and health (sleeping in past 4 or having a slower morning routine), perhaps give one a better sense of local community? and importantly for her children’s and future generations, lower the carbon footprint. (Which is not her sole responsibility, but is especially large corporations like the airline she works for.) -This isn’t to critique her, just the idealistic view this video is trying to paint this lifestyle in general as. In my opinion personally, this is not something to be idolized or normalized & it makes sense that it’s coming from an airline company. ✌🏻

It makes sense for her because it's the most cost-effective and efficient solution: 1. It costs her less money to be based in Penang and fly to KL rather than to live in KL. 2. The flight is short so there's low risk of jet lag. 3. She works for the airline she flies on, so she pays less for flights. 4. Her office is right at the KL airport so there's no additional commuting after she lands. 5. Being present for her kids is too important to be away 5 days a week.
