To be clear, the Y2K bug absolutely was a thing and a lot of talented programmers and computer engineers worked their asses off to fix the problem. It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but it would have caused a lot of problems if left unchecked.

!! the word computer initially referred to the person who programmed, or computed, the machines. it was a job mostly given to women for a number of years because it was considered to be adjacent to being a secretary, which was also essential and extremely undervalued work.
@annwethenorth

@@tired1923 it's definitely not easy to be a woman working in the industry. My friend (f) got asked by her assistant (m) if she knew how to turn on her laptop because it's" tricky". She was running the whole section of the programming company. Again, his boss. Happened a few months ago. It's happened many, many times to her. Never happened to any man I've met in the industry. You're completely right, secretaries ran all the machinery in the office. I'm glad young guys have Kurtis 🇨🇦. Grace Hopper is one of my heros. Someone else mentioned Ada Lovelace. Catherine Johnson. Anybody who ever thought women couldn't understand computers had no knowledge of the history of the industry. I get it, there seem to be fewer women than men who want to make a career working with them, but history and personal experience tell me that some of the sharpest minds in tech are female.

The "threaten your physician" part is batshit, but the whole thing about not being able to get a reasonable amount of extra medication to keep on hand for emergencies is an actual concern for the disability community. Aight not to be a nerd but basically, the concern with Y2K was that when the digits flip over to 00, it doesn't just look weird, the computer actually reads it as 1900 rather than 2000. So if you had a medical record of someone born in 1901, then when they visited the hospital next, the computer would think granny caught a cold a year before she was born. It COULD'VE been an issue, but thankfully it's a fairly easy fix. Helps that we had a good amount of warning in advance, seeing as we don't change centuries terribly often.

I was 6 when Y2K hit. Thankfully my family was sensible, and my father at the time was a sysadmin so he was actively working on making sure systems wouldn't break - and so we knew it was going to be harmless. Fun fact - Y2K only affected Windows workstations, as at the time Unix systems ran a 32 bit integer of seconds since January 1st 1970 (no, that date has no meaning, it was chosen randomly) - which means they would have been fine until 2038. (And now we're running 64 bit systems so we're good for a LONG time) 2012 hit different though. Has anything really felt real since then?

fun fact: the US federal reserve actually had a Y2K disaster response team that worked to keep the economy from collapsing in the event that all the computers stopped working and poured billions of dollars of US government money into modernizing financial computer systems across america. the team had a command post in the fed's william mcchesney martin building on the night of the new year, where approximately 100 people monitored the world's transition into the 2000s. the government prepared for a complete recession, stockpiling cash at 90 locations around the US and releasing billions of dollars worth of liquidity into the US banking system. the disaster team stayed up all night to make sure that the country transitioned smoothly into Y2K.

Truth about y2k was that it was set to happen, but everything that didn't matter was dropped so that the main computers that actually mattered were updated to avoid it. Didn't stop my dad from shutting off the TV around midnight. He had a ear to ear smile when my 10 year old face turned to wonder and shock that it actually happened. At which point he pointed out the lights were still on and just started laughing.... old man definitely got me there.

I remember this, well, not this instructional video but the whole Y2K crisis. I remember all the older generations saying “see this is what happens when you rely on all this ‘TECHNOLOGY’” usually with dramatic air quotes around technology. People thought everything in the world was just gonna stop and we were gonna go back to the Stone Age. And then midnight rolled around and literally nothing changed. I remember my uncle who was chemical engineer but was also like brilliant about everything really didn’t think anything was going to happen. So I wasn’t that scared. I'm sure others have said this but the only reason nothing happened on the year 2000 was because there was a ton of attention that went to the problem. Countless numbers of people worked really hard to prep computer systems, update software, and set up new systems in order to ensure that everything kept working. The risks were very real although some, like all the nukes launching were complete fiction, but if we hadn't done anything there would've been significant problems. So credit to all the people who worked hard to avert any issues with Y2K.

Haha! Great video! Couple of points: I think Y2K wasn't as bad as we thought because for like the last few months of that year, people worked their ass off testing and patching systems. Also, companies don't want people to know what worked and what didn't, so it's not like we really can know how bad it actually was, and how bad it could have been. But I think the concern, although over-hyped, wasn't that out there. The government in the USA still uses super old systems for processing taxes, so don't underestimate how good organizations are at *not* dealing with technology. Second point, gold is valuable because it's rare, soft and easy to work with, looks pretty, and also doesn't rust. It's always been valuable to people for centuries, so the likelihood that it would turn into a defacto medium of trade and store of value makes sense.

The Prince song had nothing to do with the Y2K bug. The lyrics were just "party like it's 1999". That was lunacy people made up about it in 1999 when the general population started hearing about it (it was brought up in sitcoms and local news segments as filler content). In '95-'97 it was only computer geeks who knew about it. By the time the public heard about it computer engineers were relieved that it would (probably) not be a problem.
