I found a puffball the size of my head in my backyard last year, but it was past its prime. The kids and I had a good time spreading the spores around. My 5-year-old son kept saying the puffs of dark spores looked like "cartoon stink". I was sure we'd have puff balls everywhere this year but I haven't found any yet. I wonder if it takes a couple years for them to grow from the spores?

JQ, are there unmistakable indicators that what one finds is indeed an edible puffball and not some look-alike that might make you sick (or worse)? Is there an etiquette for collecting them as we have here in the US when foraging for morels or other mushrooms, that you collect them in a mesh bag so the spores can be distributed whilst traipsing through the countryside?
