There was a documentary from the 80s or 90s about the Radium Dial Clock Factory, which examined the company that during the 1910 - 20's era hired young women and girls in the area to paint the glow-in-the-dark, uranium-based paint on the dials and numbers on their clocks. Part of the process was that the workers would dip their brushes in the paint and then bring it to a fine point on the tips of their tongues before painting on the clocks. Turns out that a lot of those women died of mysterious ailments that, after WWII, was determined to be radiation sickness. Pretty depressing documentary. Some of the women had to be buried in lead-lined coffins because their bodies were so contaminated with radioactivity.

I’ve seen it. The young women who worked in that factory (Was there more than one?) even painted their fingernails with it so they would glow on a date. One women’s jaw fell off due to the radiation. Today they are all buried in lead lined caskets to protect the public.

Such a horrible story! I guess that there was a health tonic that was uranium water, there's a photo of a young man with the bottom half of his head missing, of course he passed from it. What were they thinking??!!

I have a small collection of uranium glass. I love it. It doesn't always have to be green. Some clear, white, yellow also glows. And I do believe it is safe to use for food. I don't cause I'm afraid I will break it. My late husband had car model cases full of models. I cleared the top shelf of one where the light is and put a black light bulb in it and that's where mine is. It's so beautiful. I've even seen red glass that will glow orange mainly on the bottom. And some blue glass will even glow. What a beautiful oil lamp you found. Question: Do you use oil or kerosene in the lamp? Oil smokes so much and I know they were originally made to use kerosene. I remember using kerosene lamps to go to the cellar during a storm when I was young. I live in Oklahoma. I still associate that smell with tornadic storms!

As I do weeding at the ND Farmstead, I've come across broken pieces of glass & pottery, always wondered how they ended up in the foundation garden spaces. I started to collect these pieces in an old shoebox labeled 'sad glass' with note paper on where & when I've found them. I don't have a black light up there and never (until now) figured to buy one!

Your excitement is the best, and "exploring the wild untamed" of the other OBF rooms.😅 Your hushed voice while under the house... love it! The broken piece does indeed look like a vase! I had to think of radium when you had those blue bottles. They used radium a lot in health elixirs in those days, so I wont be surprised. Its again not harming if not consuming it. Radium is still used in some smoke detectors but they get replaced in fast speed for non radioactive options.

Because they ingested it. Radium itself is kind of harmless, but in those days they sold it as health elixir as well. But you dont hear from the people who drank it. Just the radium girls because they got way higher dose and started to have their faces deformed so they were also some sort of freak show material. Its a very sad story yes :( Ron from Faces of the Forgotten KZbin channel had some videos of them where he visited their graves. You arent allowed to come close to them even after so many years their remains probably still glow in the dark.

My mother was peeling old wallpaper off and one yank on one long strip pulled the entire wall down on her. Fortunately she wasn't hurt....cheap plyboard, very thin, not secured to wallstuds. Robert, I enjoy your videos but a word of caution about using that flashlight. I have heard, and also looked it up before typing this, that looking into the black light for very long can damage your eyes. Don't know how long it would take for that to happen but let's not find out, shall we? After you placed the oil lamp back on top of the cupboard you turned the flashlight towards yourself to look at it. Just wanted pass that info on for anyone who might need/want to know. Stay safe, keep exploring and happy 2024!

The piece from under the house looks like it may have had markings like a measuring cup

Wow that healing oil was crazy. I bet if they had UV lights back then they could have doubled sales bases on the blue healing properties! Doing a quick search I can't find anything on ingredients of his stuff. I think what may make a difference is whether it is reflecting the UV light or actually flourescing. Diamonds flouresce under UV so there's that!

I would say that's a shard of a Depression Glass Vase because of the little foot in the corner! K.

How did all this cool stuff stay in the house all this time?? Did successive generations just leave things where they were, stuffed into corners and stuff? I know it must be hell to go through and clean out, but I would kill to buy a house full of 100+ years of things!

Your electric clock does not have radium paint, but rather the standard phosphorescent paint you can still buy today. No worries.

I was never worried, but how can you tell the difference? It’s the right age for radium paint and that’s what they used it for and it glows like other folks radium painted clocks of the same era. However I don’t know either way, so honest question.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's radium. I don't think clocks, etc have the glow-in-the-dark quality now days that they use to. Modern=crappy quality.

@@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG radium always glows with the same intensity, the stuff they use today has to be charged by a lightsource and you see it fade over time. If you flash it with a very bright light source you will see it has a very bright lumniscency (sorry no idea how to write it right haha) but quickly fading out. You could store it in a dark room and without using light check it if you can see the dials or numbers or not. Radium doesnt need light to shine.
