8:50 Janeiras (singing the Janeiras) is a tradition in Portugal that consists of groups of people singing songs in the streets announcing the birth of Jesus and wishing him a happy new year. These groups go door-to-door, asking residents for leftovers from the Christmas festivities. Nowadays, these 'leftovers' often translate into money. They take place in January, starting on the 1st and lasting until the 6th, King's Day or Epiphany. Nowadays, many groups (especially in the city) extend the Cantar de Janeiras throughout the month.

Thank you so much for sharing Augusto! It was really cool hearing the group in person (there were like 20 people - a lot out of frame)! I had no idea the history behind it as well, super interesting to learn a bit more about the Portuguese culture there. Hope you enjoyed the video!
