last night I was in the passenger seat driving on the highway. There was a fluorescent streetlight in the middle of long, flowing branches like the ones in the beginning of this video. The image was like a flashbulb--so dark but so abruptly illuminated at the same time. It scared me. It looked like a mouth and I felt like I got lost inside it, like time dilated and I spent a little lifetime inside that mouth. I haven't been right today. Too fast and too caught up in individual words Anyway this video makes me feel like I can understand something again. Thank you Ethel Cain

I can only watch your videos and listen to your music when im in a very particular kind of mood. When im ready to have an out of body experience that lasts several days long. It's come down to days now. When I first discovered you by hearing Selby Wall by searching "she is feral", trying to find a video essay on females and cannibalism that I had lost track of, I got lost in a 3 month long out of body/my consciousness is not my own experience. I could only listen to the Preacher's Daughter tracklist up to "Thoroughfare", then would have to turn it off. Hell, Selby had me all fucked up to be honest. I'd heard things like it before, but never so bluntly put. And those others never actually made me FEEL certain things. So viscerally scared, yet understood. Anyway, then I worked up the courage to listen to the rest of the album, and once I got past the terrifying rage that Ptolemaea put me in, and continued on then got to Televangelism and just sobbed and sobbed until I completely dehydrated myself. I've never had a body of work put me into such a frenzy of completely separate emotions and mental states. I can't even wrap my head around how you're actually a real person. Like, the entity that created this is actually here on this planet. In human form. And they are just living life day to day. Same as me. I truly envy how creative and simulating you are in every level. I can't even imagine getting my thoughts and feelings and emotions out of me in such an amazingly beautiful way. They're all stuck up inside me. I'm barely even able to articulate them to myself. Let alone them spill out of me for the world to see. So thank you for letting all of your unearthly talents gush out of you for all of us to ruminate in. I wouldn't be the same without it. 💜

all the shots kind of said this thing to me: we're light craving creatures, bound and desperate for it; but ultimately we belong to darkness. In fact for all our many sources of light, we're never truly outside of the dark. Water glimmers pretty on water, but we know what's underneath. The flashlight guides our way until the battery runs out. We are chained to our streetlights like that tree that sways tired (which looked like Ethel Cain's head hanging low) Maybe running from the dark is tiring. Maybe we can stop chasing light and just accept.
