@ericblair57312 жыл бұрын
It's just a signed byte overflow issue. There aren't supposed to be that many points of material on the board for either player so you use a byte or some other signed small value to store the eval. With as many queens as black had the count went over the max and was treated as a negative. This has the side effect of screwing up the branch pruning as the computer tries to evaluate different moves, and probably explains some weird behavior at first. For instance taking an unprotected pawn might actually decrease blacks point advantage by making the overflow even more severe.
@cancerousmaterial2 жыл бұрын
it might just be because whites pawns are in a position where if enough queens are sacrificed one queen can get in the back rank and start taking all the pawns because pawns can’t defend from behind

@@ericblair5731 im pretty sure that they use ints for the eval which definitely don't overflow at 133 lol. It would therefore also not affect branch pruning as it evals the moves correctly. it'd be too easy to f up stockfish if what you said was the case. there is probably another reason. (Toby Marx-Dunn made a fair point)

Martin being super aggressive with the pawns in the first game I think makes sense for a bot with a low depth since "takes with the pawn" is, at worst, a trade, so it probably always reads as gaining in material and thus a high value move. I think that's why he can also usually spot mate in 1 or 2 but anything beyond that he rarely finds except by accident. This would also explain why he's a lot worse with so many queens, because trading a queen for a pawn is something that reads as obviously BAD at a low search depth since he'd need to be able to see farther into the future to recognize the value of a sacrifice, so he's more conservative despite having enough queens that he can probably just brute force tunnel his way through all your pawns with them.

I think it's simpler than that. When you have that only pawns, a large percentage of all possible moves are move a pawn forward or take a piece diagonally with the pawn. Both improve his position. Even if you picked moves completely randomly, they have to be good. Martin is forced to play good moves when every legal move is a good move.
@danielbranscombe66622 жыл бұрын
my thought on the first game is that the position almost forces martin to make "good" moves because the only pieces that can move are his most forward pawns and thus the vast majority of available moves are good ones.

5:17 thats probably the biggest eval swing I've ever seen in a non-mate position +133 to the brinks of defeat -133
@ryanstejskal15062 жыл бұрын
The behavior of the evaluator almost looks like there's a numeric overflow going on - the advantage is so large for black that it "wraps around" and gets displayed as an advantage for white. The sudden transition is where the advantage goes from overflowing the maximum advantage to no longer overflowing, and kicks back to the correct (if you weren't playing Martin) "black is winning". However, if this is the case, I'd expect it to wrap around at 128, not 133 (since 128 is a power of 2 and numeric overflow is an artifact of computers' base-2 representation of numbers), so I'm not sure if that's what is actually happening.
@Oznerock2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanstejskal1506 It might also be that it's just that the position starts in a way where forcing 1v1 trades is always happening so piece quality is maybe irrelevant and the move first advantage for white is more important?

martin mate in 8 well i have difficult times doing this but lucky i found it. Actually i think its not mate in 8 cuz i found some mate in 7 moves well here it is Qaa7 trying to attack the king well we will block it with a pawn so e3, then black will sacrifice his queen to check the king so Qaxc2 then we play bxc2, and also we dont want to take the pawn on c2 since we want the diagonal of the 2 queens so i have to play first Qxe3 so that my Queen on c6 will attack the c2 pawn and the diagonal so that we can prepare for the attack so Qxe3 and why not c3 blocking the attack well the two queens on the diagonal can lead to checkmate why not c3? Well first move is Qf2+ any king moves is now a checkmate if Kh1 then Qg1 is checkmate and if Kh3 then Qh7 is a checkmate. So lets continue.... Qxe3 then Qxc2+ anywhere king moves its a checkmate in 2 except Kg3, and if queen blocks theres Qe2 and Qd2, ill explain one by one If Kg3: Qxe5+ any king moves leads a mate so queen blocks at f4 then Qg1+ no matter king goes Qh8# its checkmate. If Qd4: Qxd4+ then King either h1, h3 or g3 and ill discuss this again one by one.... if Kg3: Qg1+ any king moves Qh2# if Kh3: Qh7+ king moves to g3 then Qh2# if Kh1: might be tricky to find since if i move Qh7+ its a mate in 2 still. But theres still another way which is Qxe5 threating checkmate on the next move since king cannot move any move white plays Qh2# One final move is Qe4: Qxe4+ its still the same moves in Qxd4+ so dont worry I calculated this in almost 20 minutes, its a true challenge for me. Well its checkmate in 7 not 8 didn't use any chess apps reply to me if theres something i missed thx :)
