My dad let me drive on non public road when I was about 14, and since this time I have been waiting for my 18th birthday not for alcohol, not for cigarrettes, only for my driving license. This made my lifestyle quite healthy. I turn 18 in a month and I'm already in the half of the course. Wishing patience for your son before turning whatever legal age you have there in UK!

When I first drove with my dad, we just took out the junkiest truck he had with a automatic transmission and he told me to try it out in a parking lot. Then, once I was comfortable with the parking lot, we went on the road. The only instruction he gave me was yelling BRAKE! whenever I was being dumb.

I taught my son to **OPERARATE** a car when he was 6 years old. He use to drive around the farm in a little Suzuki pick-up truck on his own with out me in the truck. He took to it like a duck to water. When we lived in Ireland I let him drive me from Ballyheigue to Ballyduff on the road and he was so chuffed at that age to be given the chance to do that. It is a memory we will always share as father and son. I know I should never have done it but hey there are not many people that have that experience that with their son at the age of 6.

Driving is really easy for some people. They may even be driving better than their instructor in 2 months time. But its important to get them to understand what an accident is because they really have no clue. A kid who hasn't experienced real desperation or a real wake up call doesn't understand something of that scale and intensity. You can't talk your way out of it. There's nothing that can be said. No comfort to be found once you make that one mistake. Being a good driver isn't about being really good at not making mistakes. Its about never making mistakes. You either drive at a 100% safe level or you don't drive safe. It's that simple. It's not a school test. 80% doesn't get you an A*. If you get a 99% grade here, you're going to end up in an accident within 50 days that was your fault and you will have to suffer the consequences. And I really mean suffer. I luckily haven't been in a car accident but I've seen them. Getting the student to push the car for 100m with the engine in neutral is a good start before learning to drive. To really get them to understand what they're moving at 10mph let alone 70. And when another car comes at you, whatever speed you're at, double it. I love racing and found driving to be really natural. But I always drove really strictly and took it really seriously even though it was super easy for me. Because I knew this wasn't a game. In games, you're racing and trying to brake as late as possible and get the best line for the corners. To this day I still do that having grown up loving racing games specially the more simulator ones. That's something I love doing and have to actively control. The entire road doesn't belong to me and the priority isn't fun. it's the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved. For people who like racing games, one thing you can do is go into the settings and disable stability control and traction control or decrease it and increase the difficulty by choosing the more simulator like option for steering and conditions rather than normal. The normal is artificial and regular cars don't have that level of downforce, traction, brakes, suspension... With these settings, your children will be able to count the number of times they would be dead per 5 minutes of them driving/racing. In the real world, you get sensor lights in your dashboard by just going over a pothole or having an older battery. In the real world, driving is boring and you zone out into your thoughts. Everyone does. Humans can't sustain attention for very long at all. And then bam. Should have developed better habits. You'll fatigue mentally and so can't rely on yourself to save you. edit: this comment is general. noting to do with this video or your son. He behaved perfectly.

These driving places are a good idea, I think it's good to learn when you're younger as your brain is better at learning then. A 5 year old can learn to speak chinese, but a 40 year old English person would really struggle. Having said that, I just learnt to drive in my 40's, so its still possible - but I would likely have learnt faster if I was 17.

The one key thing i saw there on the hill start that the car was helping him to rev up to automatically start a hill start (hill start help), So i think thats all on him to think about and learn but hey driving isnt that eas if you would think. This is a great opportunity for a kid to learn especially car gals

Well spotted. That is one thing that my car does to help. So I was confident about getting him to just use the clutch to set off, so that there isn't so much to deal with and the danger of overrevving and lurching forwards was minimised. We'll introduce the accelerator next time 😊

I've just come across this and thought how good this is to start your kids first experience driving a car safely, I live near Maidstone in Kent, is there anywhere like this place near me, it would be a great place for my daughter to bring her 15 year old daughter!!

I love that you explained what happening to the car and how you do will influence the car. In my country, many people don’t know how the manual car works even though they have passed the driving test. And….yeah I know. That’s terrible.💀

Im 11 years old, i know alot of driving advice in london, also about rounabouts, dual carriageways, slip roads. Driving is easy, the people that your on the road with are not easy to control! My mom passed her test with no minors or serious or dangerous faults

As someone who started driving at 14 im going to say a couple of things, practice makes perfect. It doesn't matter if your a beginner driving or a pro everyone needs to drive and make mistakes to get better. Second some people come across driving easier than others that doesn't make them better than you, that just means that you need a little more help which is okay. third, I think he did an okay job for a first timer, overtime he'll get much better!

If you decide to make this a series I highly reccomend you buy an older car just for him since he's your son, he is still learning so he will probably get the hang of it eventually but I noticed every time he pulls away he only uses the clutch and doesn't add any acceleration which only works in newer cars or diesels as you already know so if he gets so used to doing that by the time he's 17 - 18 and passed it will be a whole new learning curve going from a modern car that adds acceleration to an older car that doessn't due to insurance
@DrivingSchoolTV
@DrivingSchoolTV 8 ай бұрын
That’s a great observation! I instructed him to drive like that on purpose as some of the junctions here are quite small and I didn’t want him smashing the gas and dumping the clutch by accident. First step being able to set off slowly but next time we’ll introduce the accelerator for fast starts 😊

@@DrivingSchoolTV ah fair enough, I was just thinking about when my dad was first teaching me to drive in a diesel and I did this a lot, then my instructor had a diesel and I still continued it, passed and had to practically relearn how to drive a car all over again when it came to owning a petrol, not to mention I had no clue how to use a handbrake because I only used the hill assist 😂

For the most part, it is easy, mastering the wheel is probably the hardest, 2nd is brake, sometimes you press it too hard, 3rd is gas, sometimes you press that too hard too. And what i did to master all 3 of these is I Just took my car and drove around the neighborhood a few times, while being careful, i just took the time to learn those.

When I was still like 5-7, I would sit on my father's lap and control the steering wheel on a straight, clear road until about the age of 11, when I first drove by myself. I'll never forget that day. I am now 15 and I still drive without my parents around my neighborhood and area because it's mostly clear roads, but I have driven once or twice in traffic and highways, and it went pretty well. I just can't wait to turn 18 and get my drivers license.
