I've driven both single and tandem axle versions in the military. The tandem version actually came with a more powerful engine. It was actually much faster. (We used to drag race them. Andre, When it starts to slide, *get off the brakes*, especially while going backwards. The owner told you to get off the brakes at the start and you ignored him, and then did it again at the end. Yes it will still slide while the tires are turning slowly but you'll have *a little* directional control. If you lock em up, you have zero directional control, and you only got lucky here because the road up/down sniper hill is somewhat rutted. Otherwise it probably would have tried to swap ends, and you risk rolling over as it swings around sideways. Same thing applies if you ever find yourself sliding down a steep hill in slippery dirt/sand. Stay off the brakes. I've been in a situation where I was sliding backwards in sand, front end trying to overtake rear, and actually had to get on the gas to increase the tire/wheel speed so I could regain some directional control.

deuce and a half........The first time I actually got to drive one was in early 2005 in Iraq. My first sergeant asked me if I had any experience driving this thing. I told him no and that I didn't have it on my military driver's license. 10 minutes later he comes from the motor pool and hands me the license saying, you are driving this thing tonight. During my maiden trip, we ran into a complex ambush. I had to take the dang thing off-road and into the desert. We bounced all over the place. I was scared shitless (but didn't let it show). Needless to say, I ended up living through the experience and only ended up with a few neck burns from the brass that was falling from the gunners' hatch. Over the years and subsequent deployments, I ended up driving this thing off and on. Still my favorite truck in the Military arsenal. It will go where you can't walk. Super reliable when properly maintained. Just seeing this thing makes me want to do proper PMCS.

I think you get a vintage military vehicle title which come with restrictions like use for cars shows and such. Doesn't mean you can't have fun with it though. Those tires are the only weak point of military trucks. Its a hard compound to help with the weight and wear, so they just don't bite in cold snowy conditions. Not the best in real muddy condition either from what I've seen personally.

Cheaper to buy than a new pickup truck. Maintenance and operation costs would be a significantly higher though. How many gallons of oil is a oil change? Replacement tires $$$? Not available from Tirerack or Discount tire. Found them on the Goodyear truck tires website, but no price listed. Don't worry about the loading height at Lowes. Either pull around to the loading dock or have them use the fork lift. Or just get all the spectators to help. I'm just having fun with my comment. I've wanted one ever since I found the Gov Planet website in 2015 via a "Dirt Every Day" video on the MotorTrend channel.
