As a township worker we very seldomly encounter such situations. We explain everything just as you did. In closing we jokingly ask them to join us with their shovel and than we’ll park the machine. Pretty much ends the conversation with a laugh and an understanding.

Someone who is caring and proud of their work and is concerned that they contribute to the comfort to the families and friends at a time of sorrow. Not everyone can do that job, they are are fortunate that you are very good at it.

My Grand Father dug graves during the depression and people told him the same thing about charging to much, he would tell them the other option was for the family to dig the grave themselves, which never happened. My son and I mowed a 4 acre cemetery with 1,000 headstones. Every year I would collect outdated flowers and flowers that were blown away from stones. We did this the last week of March for 5 years and would start mowing the first week of April. This year we had a lady write a long letter to the trustee and state she was going to prosecute me for picking up her silk poinsettias the last week of March and throwing them away. I didn't even bat an eye, I told them I quit. People do not understand how much effort goes into keeping a cemetery clean and manicured. Hats off to you.

I once had a job where I had to bid on jobs. I finally developed the rule of thumb--figure out the cost and then double it. There were so many hidden or long term expenses you can totally overlook. And that is just to break even. My fear of overcharging made bidding difficult.

I was not very good at bidding. Sometimes I would have to work my tail off to keep job on bid. Something needs repair or you need a part--all unplanned on budget. In your case I have no idea how to charge equipment depreciation, mileage, etc. My boss did that after I submitted time needed. I think customer was charged 125 per hour to allow for wages, & other

For the couple that complained about the charges to open and close a grave. Maybe they should undercut Daddy Cornstar on pricing. Ask the man when hes available and pay him $200 for his services. I've received the same type of comments on towing vehicles and plowing snow. You charge too much. Well, purchase the equipment, get licensed and insured, and be available 24/7, and I'll pay you instead of me getting out of bed.

Any piece of your equipment should be charged out at at the least 100 an hour. So if you bring three pieces of equipment and it takes you 2 hours that's 600 right there. I had a towing company and I got that crap all the time. 250 dollars holy cow are you a rip off. Rollback tow truck 121k cost insurance, drivers pay, fuel wear and tear. Winching some idiot who was speeding and went off the road. People are clueless about the cost to run a business. Daddy Cornstar my wife and I live your videos. You did a great job explaining that DC. Back when I had my business and I was working at a woman's house, she asked, why I charge so much. I told her the tools I work with aren't cheep and I use the right tool for the job. ( I was using a sander at the time ) So, I told her if this breaks, are you going to replace it for me, so I can finish the job. An she said "no " that was up to me. I said there you go. An then there that million dollar insurance I have to carry. Asked her if she wanted to pay for that too, for the year. She smiled said carry on and walked away.

I think you did a fantastic job explaining about the cost of digging a grave. Here in Southeastern Ky in our little neighborhood I think they charge like $750 or $850 per grave and digging a grave at most of the cemetery’s is a lot of rock. Sometimes they have to blast them. I use to help hand dig graves when I was younger and that is hard work. Anyway, great video. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy watching.

You hit the nail on the head, most if not all people have no idea what anything takes to get done, digging a grave, putting food on the table, fixing or building anything, very few people understand the cost and effort involved.

People have a hard time empathizing with any for profit business, especially when it’s selling a needed service. They always undervalue your labor and many times they can have an unrealistic expectation of service for what they’re paying. I try to explain as much as I can, I like the way Cole does his profit/loss breakdown videos as a way to explain just how much money a business can go through as still not make anything.

You and your boys do a fantastic job digging, carrying away the dirt so the site is clean for the funeral. Then coming back to cover the grave and making the grass as neat around the grave. Then coming back to top off before reseeding. Plus moving monuments if it is necessary. Alot of trips but you do it right. Worth the money!

I have a small parish church and cemetery about 12 miles south of me where the members of the congregation dig the graves by hand. The older guys are dying off and younger ones are off to larger towns for work and it’s getting very difficult to round up enough people to do the job. You know it’s a farming community because they can drop everything and go when the need arises.

Imagine not doing one minute of research on any subject and then telling the professional they are a thief for charging barely enough to pay for the costs involved to do something for you.

You handled it well. We dig graves as little different. Use a small dump truck. And a mini excavator. Leave the dirt next to the grave as far away as we can reach. Cover it with some grass carpet. Haul the extra away. Re filling is just push it back in with the same mini excavator. Save's all that equipment and a semi. Also fuel isn't cheap anymore.

I work at a cemetery in Decatur IL and we charge 700 to open and close a grave. And just a note we outline grave with a sod knife to get a nice clean edge before we dig

The only thing that cost nothing is talking and still I am not sure. Everything cost something and digging up for a cemetery is a precision work that needs to be used at every step. You are dealing as well with pure emotional stuff, people having lost a member of their family, are fragile, easily upset and being respectful and showing it as you do is priceless. You did well to tell them what is life in the real world.

My dad and I dig graves on the side of farming as well, and have had to explain why our prices are "so darned high" several times. Most people don't own their business and don't consider what all goes into that final price.

I love watching you and Cole!! I have to tell you that my uncle does the grave digging in my home town of Russell KS and the surrounding area…. He has done it for all of my life and he even has the nick name the “Grave Digger”!! The stories that he tells about the all of the graves that he dug over the years are very funny!! I wore red wing boots exclusively for over 30 years. I tried a pair of Brunt boots...I now own three pairs of them, and I'll never touch Red Wings again. Brunts are almost 1/2 the price, and have lasted twice as long while being more comfortable.
