Really good insight into the money side of djing, could you talk about the mental side of touring, always traveling, sleeping less and constantly being on the move. Do you miss home and how does that play into your personal life

These videos are so nice dude. Literally, some of my favorite parts are when the whole crew is just kicking it and talking about how the night went. Love how you mentioned that sometimes losing money for a gig doesn't affect you because you've had such a tremendous experience doing it. Motive behind being a touring DJ should not be about making huge stacks. It's gotta be on the lines of doing something you love and sharing that excitement with the world.

What's the best thing about James Hype? During the lockdowns, the live stream would start and he would declare himself the best DJ in the world. He IS the best technical DJ in the world who takes the most risks in front of an audience. There's no waiting for the next 4/4th, he keeps grinding and shoving in more and more and more. He will be #1. Respected by all generations. Timeless samples and acapellas. He has it all. Props to his team keeping him together and functional.

This was a great insight into the financial aspect of being a touring DJ. Even when I used to be a local resident the cost that goes just in to that was always a lot more than people expected so good to see you talk about it on this much bigger scale. One thing I am always interested in, when you plan new sets you don't ever seem to practise them (as you are always travelling) so do you just go into the night and do the new transitions on the fly? Keep up the great work with the series and the DJing, I used to HATE listening and watching house DJs as if i am honest I just thought it was boring, 7 minutes of the same song with a basic outro to intro mix at the end, watching JH has now got me hooked!

Lol it's so true, the whole finance talk. Really insightful, I love it. Way back I was chatting with a somewhat large dj about the price of a CDJ setup and I was surprised at how pained he sounded talking about making that purchase and he was basically like "Nah man just cause I'm a dj doesn't mean I'm made of money!"

I'm a mobile DJ and played at a couple clubs, the money is fantastic but the costs up front can be hefty. After you buy a controller, carry cases, speakers, sub etc you need to work a lot of gigs to make it all back! But here in Australia, typically you would ask for AUD$1000-$2000 for a 6 hour gig for a wedding or private function. Resident djing is a lot funner and you can play the music you like, but sometimes you have to weigh in what means more to you - money or happiness. At the end of the day, you're getting paid to dj and literally that is like a hobby, which is incredible that it's possible. No real losing with DJing :) Love the vids mate, can't wait to see you at Perth Listen Out when you come down under

This is my first moving diffy vid and it’s so cool and refreshing to see how y’all navigate the tour. You guys are definitely thinking ahead of the curve and rocking shows along the way. I’ve loved watching your sets and was super impressed by your DDJ 400 videos, flexing on any equipment. You’re a true dj in every sense but this vid showed how much a businessman you and your team are and how much you respect the craft! All the best man, thank you for all your hard work!

Can you talk about the methodology of how you go about planning a set? How do you choose which songs you play and when? When you have multiple shows in short proximity to each other, do you reuse the same playlist to conserve energy or do you make every single show unique?

Love the honest overview of how the income is devided between so many factorst! SO SO SO many people are needing this exact explanation. They simpley dont understand what you have to pay from the money you get. Asking the amount of money you want to earn would be so much easier if people just realise that you have to pay a lot of things of that money!

Really good topic to bring up on this video. I promoted for 10+ years in the UK booking all major trance djs, so I know how much it costed and the responsibilities of a promoter and how to take care of the djs you booked, in some cases you had 3-4 djs on the same bill. I don’t know how much the industry has changed but I was NEVER given the option to have the artist arrange hotels and drivers. There was a fee or there was a “landed” price, based on flight share etc, and 9 times out of 10 I had to book the flights and then get approval from the agency about flight times, as naturally you would look at the cheapest possible flight flying out at 05:00, but the agency would tell you the times required and only when approved could yo go ahead and book them. As a given, I knew I was always responsible for paying hotel, driver’s, food (which would be room service) or I made an effort and took them out to a restaurant. I think if this responsibility fell back onto the dj agency then obviously the fee quoted would need to be much higher to accommodate these added costs naturally. Later on, I actually got involved in Djing and became an artist myself! Signed to Spinnin’ records. As an artist I knew what I had done as a promoter in the past so knew what the expectation was and sadly some gigs were poor in terms of what the promoter did and what they provided. On a side note though, the promoter is only responsible for the artist so if the James wants to bring tour manager and Wallace etc then that’s on him, he covers that cost of it so that will drill the price up of the trip as then its 3 paying heads for his team and again this would need to be taken into account when negotiating a fee. Like you have said some Festivals you walk away negative which is rubbish on you but you are looking at the bigger picture in terms of the exposure you got from being on that billing. I think for an artist the best money is made from club gigs 1000+ capacities as you can command the best fee based on the capacity of the venue and what the promoter is charging at the door. But great insight and tour life is hard, constantly running on 4-5 hrs sleep and when you turn up to the next gig, promoters are buzzing to see you etc but what they don’t know is that you played somewhere the night before, running off minimal sleep and didn’t sleep on plane and just want to crash out and sleep. Thing is you wouldnt change it for the world!
@JamesHype
@JamesHype 2 жыл бұрын
Couple of things here, the USA is slightly different to Europe and the UK in this respect, it’s normal for shows to be landed. Also since flight prices have gone up so much lately, promoters would much rather they were the artists responsibility

@@JamesHype I really appreciate you taking the time out to reply mate. Me commenting wasn't ment to detract from what you had said, merely give an deep dive into what it was like circa 2009, and is good to hear how its evolved to the current day.I never actually thought about the steep increase in air travel and it makes sense that promoters push that back into the manager to organise. What I do want to say is that I have been following your dj journey for a very long time now and its truly inspiring seeing how far you have come these past 2 years specifically. It is sometimes overlooked how technically good a dj is and promoters & press look at djs based on their dj mag ranking and how commercial they are and how likely ticket sales will go booking them. You are by far one of the technically gifted djs Ive seen since James Zabiela and how now being recognised for it brings a smile to my face every time I get a notification to say a new vlog is up and you are playing a different headline show. I know how long these vids take to put together and we all appreciate you and your team. I would love it if you could incorporate an old track Laurent Wolf Saxo into one of your sets. Just when you went back to playing older tracks, Saxo always used to smash it. Anyways, Much love and keep looping!

JH I have to be honest bro, I'm not that big of a fan of the type of music you play since I'm more into Afro House. HOWEVER after watching a couple of episodes of Moving Differently I'm starting to know you, the person, a bit better and one thing that I really like and respect about you is your hard work and passion for your art. You're constantly on the lookout for the next big tune (if you're not producing it yourself) and more importantly for new creative techniques to use during your sets. That's RESPECT bro and I really appreciate it! Keep up the honest work, keep up with this series because it's really insightful and entertaining, also big ups to your team for holding you down through this all. All the best bro!

Also, one more thing I forgot to ask :D - for an upcoming DJ, what would you say is the best way to go if you wanna get (more) gigs or signed by an agent/manager? I've had one release thus far and on my of getting a second release on a fairly big label within Afro House. Unfortunately the gigs are yet to come. Bookers rarely answer back when I contact them. Any tips? Flood my soundcloud/IG with mixtapes??

Can you please do a moving differently topic discussion on how DJs can post mixes on KZbin using copywriten music? Do you obtain a sync license for every song on all your mixes, and then work with KZbin’s ASCAP/BMI appeals department to clear the track? That could be tens of thousands of Dollars in licensing and lots of tracking down copyright owners for permission to Use their music on KZbin and just doesn’t sound sustainable. Is there a different professional license with ASCAP or BMI I can get so my mixes don’t get taken down? I want to pay the artists for their works and do it legally, but KZbin keeps taking down my DJ mixes. Please help!

I just love ur vlogs ♥️. But can you please use a better microphone if you have something more to tell. Because it is so hard to understand anything when the air conditioning is running in the background 😅. Keep it up and much fun on the Tomorrowland mainstage 💪🏻 u are already a legend 🔥🔥

My favorite show on youtube. Follow you since the australia tour. I‘m happy for you that you don‘t do drugs or excessive drinking. But I‘m not happy for you that groupies don‘t seem to fit your schedule…
