I got ROBBED in THAILAND and I FILMED the whole thing

I interview Frederik about getting his gold necklace robbed in Bangkok, Thailand. Frederik was filming himself on a nightout as he walked down Sukhumvit Rd in central Bangkok. He was then approached by a stranger who gave him a hug. Frederik thought nothing of the encounter as the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok has a lot of sex workers and it's quite normal for them to approach people as the pass by. It was later that evening that Frederik noticed his gold chain was missing. In this video we'll discuss what happened next.

The thief got caught because the video went viral and TV channels took a keen interest. The police realised this and decided "we'd better sort this out as it does not leave a good impression of Thailand". The courts thought the same and gave the thief a stiff sentence - sending out a message. I suspect this kind of theft has happened numerous times but never filmed and consequently no police action is ever taken. Quite lucky he filmed it in the first place. I wish him good luck with his channel and his new business.

Sorry to hear about this - best to get over it as quickly as possible, don't waste energy on it - it's already done and in the past. Over the years I have had a couple things stolen during my travels - including a top of the line iPhone that was snatched out of my hands on the Lyon Metro as we pulled out of the station and the doors were closing. It sucks but it is gone forever. Better to swallow the bitter feelings after a day or two and move on. It's not the end of the world - far worse things can and do happen.

I hope he's not planning on a security business! The lesson is clear, don't display wealth, and keep all valuables under cover and out of sight. I was in Pattaya one evening and when I got back to my hotel I noticed a rip in my small backpack. Someone had used a knife to try to access the front pocket, but must have been disturbed. I walk very fast so it must have happened in a crowded area which slows down the human traffic. Always be vigilant when overseas.

It could be anything really. I was on a songtaew (Baht bus) and just like him, I had a few beers but was far from drunk. 2 ladyboys came in and sat on my left and right. I remember the one on the left asked me for the time and at this point the one on the right must have slipped my iPhone out of my pocket. And just like him, I didn't notice until I was walking down walking street and gave myself a little pat and it was gone. This was about 10 years ago, before the 'Find me' option like they have now. On a positive note, that is really the only time anything bad has happened to me in Thailand in over 10 years except for the occasional overcharging.

He got damn lucky that the media got involved otherwise I doubt the Tourist Police would have done much of anything. He was smart posting the video on the internet but sort of dumb wearing that at night in that part of Bangkok. I tend to only stay in Thai hotels/ guest houses where only Thais stay since many tend to have on the doors of the rooms a place for your own lock and also a closet inside the room where you can put your own lock. If I have someone come to my room for hire for a massage I make sure everything is locked, the keys and extra money hidden. Only enough money to pay for the services and perhaps a tip. In twenty-two years never had a single thing stolen or money taken. You just have to have common sense more than the average foreigner.

People get killed easily in places like Dominican republic wearing any kind of flashy jewelry. I'll never understand why one would do it. When Paul McCartney was Recording In Lagos a bunch of guys jumped out of a car and robbed him and Linda at knifepoint. Took all their money and their Band on the run tapes too. When you're a foreigner you're already a target and resented by the locals to begin with. Don't add gold to the mix.

Exact same thing happened to me. My first visit to Koph Samui walking home down the main street in Chaweng a moped carrying two ladyboys pulled up beside me, it was very polished. One moved behind me and the other wrapped her arm around my neck from the front just as seen in this video. I pushed them away and it was over in a few seconds as they hopped back on the moped and sped away. Only when i got back to my apartment did i realise my grandfathers gold St Christopher was no longer round my neck. Thinking back i could recall that the person that stood behind me had also patted down my pockets so it was a verty thorough job. The sentimental loss still hurts me and i'll be honest i had a bad taste ine mouth and was suspicious of all ladyboys I seen from that day on. Being niave i didn't know about the tourist police and didn't even report it. I regret not going round the gold shops asking but there were so many of them that is just seemed i needed to accept a much loved family item was gone. learned my lesson never to show any item of wealth in Thailand.

Have read about similar recent incidences in Pattaya. Free huggers propping out of no where and the chain and wallets are gone. I always wore a $10 fake Cuban chain, no one approached me, ever.

It's looks like the guys in the background were in on the robbery. They kept cheering the girl on and saying: "bye" "bye". I think that they were there to make sure the girl was successful in here robbery attempt. I hate to see this happen to good people. 😔 😟 🙁 😥

I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago in Pattaya where a woman (or transgender) came up to me & started kissing me. I then felt she was trying to grab my wallet. Unfortunately I was a bit tipsy at that stage. And when I got back to my hotel $4k Thai baht was missing from my wallet.

My mother usually wears a golden necklace to hang an amulet but mind you, we live in a small province. Whenever she goes to Bangkok, she takes her necklace off. P.S. (Edit) Most big cities are not safe from thieves, except for Tokyo in my opinion. Two of my friends got robbed in front of a big crowd in Paris, a friend of mine got stolen in Naples, one in Vienna, and a former colleague got robbed in the suburb of LA, just to name a few events that happened in my circle of friends. I think we should watch out wherever we go.

yes exactly we have to be vigilant everywhere. For the most part I feel safer in Bangkok than I do in my home city of Dublin
@ptanisaro
@ptanisaro 2 жыл бұрын
 @Thairish Times Nobody in my circle's ever been to Dublin, so I have no say in this :) Bangkok is indeed dangerous, but Thais in general are pretty kind folk, I'd say. I usually get help from strangers wherever I go. Perhaps I looked like a village girl, that's why,... my brothers commented on the stories when I told them about my time in BKK.

If Bangkok wants to be through along the lines of Singapore, how about investing in some street surveillance cameras in high profile areas, particularly tourist areas. If they already have them , they are not doing a very good job.
