I've had the Genki Covert Switch Dock for quite some time. The fact that it functions without being plugged in (as long as the device is willing to provide power to it over USB-C) is new to me. Can't believe I never tried it (even accidentally). Awesome!
@tbuk83502 жыл бұрын
USB-C PD (Power Delivery) is awesome. Because USB-C is a dual-sided, reversible connector, both devices can be a host and device, meaning one can power the other, and control the connection. What's happening here, is the dock and the Switch run a handshake when plugged in to "discuss" which device is the host (the main control device) and which is the device (the controlled device). Then, if the device requires power, for example, it states that to the host and the host starts powering it. It's complete magic how seamlessly it works, and it's why every singe device should just use USB-C from now on (especially considering some in-spec USB-C cables can deliver more than 200W, which is more power than required for some high-end gaming laptops).
@beardedlion2 жыл бұрын
@@tbuk8350 I'm aware of how USB-C works in general, the element of surprise here was that a mains-powered device without battery can be powered over USB-C. For example: my Thunderbolt 3 Dock (from Belkin) will not do anything if the mains adapter isn't connected. A generic USB-C hub might be engineered to operate from different sources (so you can use it in PD passthrough mode, or bus powered), but for this device (which primarily is a Nintendo Switch docking accessory that will not function as such without mains power) it is surprising that the engineers went the extra mile to make it possible.

I was one of the early backers on the Whipr kickstarter and got the base unit, rowing seat, and all the accessories for $400 so if you were one of the backers it was pretty much similar to what other companies were charging for rowing machines except this was portable and can fold up and fit just about anywhere. Was so happy that it wasnt a scam though cause I really needed a portable rowing machine that wasn't $1k.

I was one of the people that backed the Covert Dock on Kickstarter, so as soon as they started talking about that I knew it wasn't a scam because I got mine and it works perfectly. I've also backed their latest project which is a set of gaming wireless earbuds that are supposed to have a really low latency and will also be able to connect to two different sources at the same time. So for instance you can connect it to your console or TV for video game audio and, at the same time, have it connected to your phone to talk to your friends on Discord.

@@verakoo6187 I got it for $59USD including shipping. That's the benefit of backing on Kickstarter is that you generally will get it for cheaper than the MSRP. It was $49USD plus $10 for shipping to Canada. Plus at the time most 3rd party docks for the Switch bricked the console, this one remains one of the few 3rd party docks that doesn't brick the console. It makes it more convenient if you want to bring your Switch on a trip, you can plug it into a hotel or Airbnb TV. It's definitely more compact and easier to bring with you than the actual Switch dock. Plus you can also use it for other devices like the iPad or a Samsung phone or tablet.

I ordered the Volterman wallet for my husband years ago and he got it very quickly and uses it every day. The tracking works, the camera works, it does legitimately charge a phone (although it definitely doesn't charge it MUCH), and the leather is a really decent quality. The charging cable sucks as it's really hard to get it placed correctly and the battery is terrible so even though it works, you have to charge it daily. The camera isn't a great quality, but it does what it says it does, the app is pretty crappy, but it still works. Is it a scam? I've read articles where everyone is stockpiling on it, but I don't know that it's completely justified. Now people not getting theirs, if that's what is happening with the company now, that stinks because it legitimately years ago wasn't an issue.

Just so you know: when a project is on kickstarter you're technically not _purchasing_ anything. You're "investing" in the idea of a product/service/dream and in return they can offer you a benefit _if_ everything goes according to plan. In reality this means the _can_ spend the money on other stuff and come up with some BS story about manufacturing cost, unforeseen issues etc. So invest if you really believe that this company can deliver. But be very ware of "first time" campaign starters. Do your own research on the history of the people involved in the company. And whatever you do: don't start with expensive investments :)

Just a reminder that the official switch dock doesn't follow the usb power delivery spec in docked mode and using unofficial docks is severely ill-advised because the switch can request more power than the unofficial dock can supply while doing an update and that will brick your switch.
@Dudewitbow2 жыл бұрын
given its a multi pupose dock, and can charge other devices(many of which have higher TDPs than the switch) if the problem is power, then that shouldn't be a problem... unless you mean its not power related. It's a 30W brick (more power than a switch can draw) and it's marketing page outright mentions that it's compliant to the nintendo switches specs.
@chadmasta52 жыл бұрын
@@Dudewitbow it's more that the signals don't match the power delivery standard. For example with the official dock, the switch will do weird things like send the signal to the dock that normally corresponds to a lower current, let's say 500 miliamps, but it'll actually draw 2 amps. It does all sorts of weird stuff like that but the official adapter is designed around it. 3rd party docks always say they follow the switch's specs but that's not true. Nintendo has never released documentation on how the dock works so any 3rd party docks just guess. There's a well documented history of 3rd party docks bricking switches. Chargers are fine in handheld mode but in docked mode it does all sorts of weird off-spec stuff that nobody actually fully knows.

@@chadmasta5 and its also documented by the person who wrote the inital google+ report that there are chargers that work correctly. @chadmasta52 жыл бұрын
@@Dudewitbow While it's true that not all of them may brick your switch, being made by a company that makes accessories for the switch doesn't mean anything. The first noted dock that bricked switches was from Nyko who also has made many switch accessories. Personally it's not worth the risk to me. You'd be better off taking the board out of a real switch dock and putting it in a 3D printed case. It ends up being a little bigger than a chromecast and it's guaranteed to be safe with your switch (just keep the switch face down so you don't block the fan.) Yeah it's a little less convenient since you have to carry more adapters with you but I'd prefer the security of knowing my switch will be safe instead of the convenience of one adapter that I can't be certain won't damage my console.
