yeah ads used to commonly be entertainment in their own right. nowadays it's super rare.

Fwiw, since traditional broadcast tv had no way of differentiating who exactly was watching them at that particular moment (and no way of customizing which commercials would show for different viewers at that moment), broadcasters (especially the major ones there weren't specialized like on cable, e.g., CBS, NBC, ABC) would usually select commercials based on who was most likely to watch and spend, even if that demographic wasn't true of the whole audience. If you see a lot of commercials aimed at seniors with medical conditions or whatever, it's because they were the most likely people to watch the program at that time since they tended to be more likely to watch TV in general (and more importantly, will usually have the money to spend on the advertised products/services).

The thing is with cable, it used to be the main ( and one of the only) ways companies got both their name and products out there. Due to that, companies spent so much time and energy on their commercials and for the most part they were really good. Now, there are so many ways to get your name out there that most companies don't really care as much about their commercials. The quality decreased because of that. Most of the ads today are geared more towards older people people they are the only people for the most part still using cable.

I think the counteracting major difference between ads on TV and ads on KZbin and Twitch is that the shows are ALWAYS written around them. Whereas content creators on KZbin and Twitch only sometimes take advantage of the ability to put ads somewhat where they want them. Like, if someone's video has logical chapters to it, they can stick the ad between two chapters and it'll be as unobtrusive as an ad can be. Or for Twitch, my favorite example is still Loading Ready Run: if they're playing some Jackbox games, they'll tend to play two games, run ads (with subscribers seeing THEIR ads for merch, future streams, and things), play another two games, run ads, and finish with one or two more games. Sadly, I can no longer safely recommend The Misadventures of Hello Cthulhu. (I mean internet safety, not NSFW content.) But at least there's the TV Tropes page.
