*** Hi Craig - hand and peripheral nerve surgeon from Canada here. For you, the biggest risk of NOT having your nerve repair done (and soon, within 2 weeks of it happening) is that you have a decent chance of developing a painful neuroma. This means pain right in the palm where your cut is (and possible shooting up or down) every time you put pressure on the palm. This happens when the nerve is trying to heal but makes a disorganized clump of nerve sensory fibres at the injury when it can't get to the other cut end of the nerve. I would NOT recommend leaving this injury for that risk alone. Once you're out of the window of an easy repair under the microscope, treating this problem becomes much harder (you'll need a graft of your own nerve or nerve substitute) with much poorer long term results vs fixing it) because the two cut ends will retract away from one another. In order for the primary nerve repair to work well, there can't be ANY tension on the ends (hence doing it soon, before they retract)...

I had a neuroma when I cut the nerve in my thumb. It was extremely painful and ended up having surgery to remove it. Once it was removed they had to put in a nerve substitute tube in and I had to wait for the nerve to grow back together. The tube was there for the nerve to follow. Took much longer to heal. It took a long time to get feeling back and I still have no feeling in a small area of the thumb. I recommend getting it fixed too.
@slimigan

@@sanityendshere that's right - not uncommon, but much LESS likely if he gets the nerve repaired...

I did the same thing to my hand 3 years ago removing the seed from an avocado. I hit my artery and nerve, had to have surgery to repair both. It took almost a year to get full feeling back in my finger. I still have weird sensations in my hand. Wishing you a speedy recovery, man!

Thanks for the positivity in the times of healing. I’m three days into recovering from a PRP injection in my rotator cuff and the amount of pain I’ve endured has been surprising. Let’s hold the line and focus on what we can control while the body heals. Best of wishes on your road to recovery.

What are you doing for exercise while you recover though. I am so glad to hear people who get injured and never give up because of it. It has to be the hardest thing to keep going even after a serious injury. If I had something like this happen to me I would probably give up. Only because I have that stupid mentality where if something is too difficult for me I just say screw this and give up. I hope you recover from your injury.

Quick tip for cutting a pepper, mate. Cut both ends off. Turn it upside down and slice the edges of the pepper, following its natural curve. You’ll be left with just the middle part when done. No need to scrape out seeds 🫑🫡

Dude sorry to hear about it! I would recommend continuing to train with other movements like: Hack Squats, Backward sled drag, Nortic Curls, back extentions and Hamstring curls to keep the leg strength and then plyos to keep the explosiveness for weightlifting. This injury doesn't have to hold you back. You have to innovate and learn to grow. Some of Louie Simmons most innovative ideas in power lifting came when he found ways to train through injury.

Back in 2010 I got my hand caught in a drum sander (not fun, don't recommend). Caused some nerve damage to my ring finger. Had the same thing at first (shoot pains, irritating numbness, etc). And I still don't have feeling in the finger (not that that sounds comforting). But honestly it doesn't stop my usage of the hand at all. I'm hopeful your nerve recommends and all of it comes back. My nerve was essentially torn out, so I had no chance. But I guess the point of my story is you'll be back lifting heavy in no time. And that you forever have an excuse to avoid cooking. 👍👍

I broke a cutterknive in my hand and cut the nerve to my pointing finger when I was around 24… the scrubs only sewed my cut not my nerve. It did not grow back together. The open end formed a very sensitive knob at the base of my pointing finger… really unpleasant. Went to a hand surgeon. They fixed the nerve after almost six years. Took the 6 weeks with a fixed hand. Feeling in the finger came back to around 70%.
