I lift heavy and train hard. I've worked out at several PF locations in the US!. As long as you don't have a dckhead attitude with other gym goers, continuously slam the weights, grunting excessively loud like a corn star, not sharing equipment you will be fine. The only complaints I have gotten is footwear it was reasonable, (wore work boots instead of sneakers they asked me to stay off the machines). One didn't like that I had a gallon of water with me asked me to leave it in my locker.

I've been a member at my PF for 3 years. There are other gyms in town that may have more features, but it's more about what you put into your workout, than where you train. In the last year I've put an inch on my arms, hit a 820lb 2RM on hip sled, dropped about 5% body fat, and have yet to hear the lunk alarm even go off. For ~$10 a month, it's well worth it.

Hardly impressive numbers for a male with 31 years of off and on again experience, but injuries and a physical job take their toll. You can absolutely get in the best shape of your life at PF with a little modification. The dumbbells only going to 75lbs kind of sucks, but just do more reps and slow down your cadence.. or prefatigue the muscles doing something else before you hit your set. There's always a workaround.

I am a former PF member. Here's my criticism of PF. They don't do enough to educate members about gym etiquette. My #1 pet peeve was: people lounging on the seated machines while doom scrolling on their phones. This is particularly frustrating during peak hours (weekday early evenings.) Or somebody who is hoarding a machine for 30 minutes to do 5 sets all at one go with minutes long rest breaks in between sets. Nobody wants to harsh someone else's groove by asking, "Mind if I work in a set?" Do one f'ng set, wipe it down and move on, especially during peak hours. #2 pet peeve: nobody reracks weights. Nobody wants to run around the gym to find where that special weight denomination has gotten to. Or to pull 350 lbs of weight off the Smith machine before you can use it. #3 pet peeve: complacent security - showing your membership barcode on entry seems to be optional. How many of those people working out on the floor are really members? I had my locker broken into and $200 stolen while I was working out during peak hours. Now admittedly the lock was an inferior luggage combo lock that I bought at the front desk but I'd hate to think a legitimate member did the deed. Last complaint: NO SAUNA. Sauna has a legitimate physical fitness claim because studies show it promotes the body's production of human growth hormone. I never want to belong to a gym again that doesn't have a sauna. Am I too judgemental?

I agree with the cell phone and weight racking, but I find this at other gyms as well. I am at the point where I now just go up and say " How many sets do you have left" which usually gets them moving. Also, women grabbing up 3 or 4 sets of dumbbells, dragging them off somewhere, then not putting them back.

The weight in the hands is divided by the number of times the rope reverses direction. Normally, this is once (it goes *up* to the first pulley, then *down* to the weight stack). In that case, the weight is just divided by one - 100lbs on the stack/1 = 100lbs in the hands. If the rope reverses direction twice, divide the weight by two - 100lbs on the stack/2 = 50lbs in the hands. If the rope reverses direction 3 times, 100lbs on the stack/3 = 33.33lbs in the hands, and so on. I use number of times the rope "reverses direction" instead of "number of pulleys" because sometimes there are two pulleys at the top (like on the machine Mitch is doing tricep pressdowns on), each only changing the direction of the rope by 90 degrees, but the rope is only fully reversing direction one time.

It's not quite that simple, you can loop a cable through multiple direction reverses with no effect on the weight. What matters is the number of cables present at the weight end. Starting the cable at the top, looping it around the weight and going back up to a wheel e.g. introduces two cables to the weight itself, effectively halving it. If you start with the cable attached to the weight itself, looping it around multiple fixed wheels after that will have no effect, you need to insert a pulley into the system.
@deltalima6703
@deltalima6703 3 ай бұрын
Sometimes they loop the working side instead of the weight side. You also need to look at how long the moment arm is. Add in the friction for all the pulleys and you should be close. Distance the weight moves vs distance the handle moves covers everything except friction. Of course all that mechanics needs to be done on the muscles bones and tendons too. No sense getting just the right weight and then doing hamstrings on every machine.

The cable weight isn't about changes in direction, it's about whether or not one of the pulley wheels moves up and down when you pull the cable. You could make a cable go around an infinite amount of fixed pulleys, changing direction an infinite amount of times, and it wouldn't change the fact that pulling it one meter would lift the weight one meter. A moving pulley wheel, on the other hand, will cut the effective weight in half because you have to pull the cable twice as far as the weight will move. I work for a shop that makes material lifts and most of them are rated at 500 lbs. and have normal pulley systems. One of the models is rated for 1000 lbs. and it has a pulley wheel in the platform that moves up and down. This is because it would be really hard to hand crank it up with 1000 lbs. on it. By having a pulley wheel on what is effectively the weight stack, it makes it feel half as heavy but takes twice as long to crank up.

Exactly - additional pulleys only affect the weight if they travel with the weight, and for gym equipment specifically, ratios besides 2:1 are pretty rare, so for keeping track of lifts it's almost always simple to figure out where to set the stack at different gyms: x or 2x.

16:53 - You are correct. The first machine is more of a fixed pulley. These just allow you to redirect the direction the weight is pulled. You still need to provide the full amount of force to move it. The second machine has more of a compound or block and tackle pulley which is giving you a mechanical advantage allowing you move heavier weight with less force.

I train at a Planet Fitness because it's the only 24 hour gym where I live that isn't ridiculously overpriced - and I have to travel for work occasionally, so with my membership level I can use any PF. There are things that frustrate me about it - mainly from an equipment standpoint, notably not having some things I would like. However, I can get a good solid workout in - and in a strange way, the lack of some extra pieces of equipment that would be available in some gyms means I can get much better at the basics. Some machines don't go heavy enough - others I wonder why they go as heavy as they do, oh well. I have found that not all Planet Fitness locations are created equally. Some have heavy stacks on their cable machines, others stop at 95 lbs. Some have dumbbells up to 95, others stop at 75. Some have machines that while being pin loaded, mimic the movement and motion of plate loaded machines - especially for pulldowns, shoulder press and incline chest. There are also some really jacked regulars in the planet fitness I go to, so you can definitely get a good workout in them with the right plan.

A note on the cables - The Work done when moving anything is the weight (force) of the object times the distance it’s moved. Or, Work = Force * Distance (W=F*D). A change in direction doesn't actually change the force needed to move the weight (if anything, it slightly increases the force since there will be some friction in the pulley) So, when a cable goes around a pulley which is fixed in place, the force changes direction but not magnitude. But Michell is spot on about the pulleys where the attachment is in the center of the pulley. When this happens, the weight attached to the center of the pulley moves only half as much as the cable. So Fc * Dc = Fw * Dw (Force and Distance of the cable and weight) Since the cable is moving twice as far as the weight, it you’ll need only half of the force to do so, thus, it feels half as heavy as the actual weight.

I am a former PF member. Would go 3 times a week, usually after work. They have what they call the 30 minute workout area. I would do this on Monday to get my week started, however I would have problems pretty much every time because of someone coming in and monopolizing one machine instead of using the ones on the main floor. Then you would have those guys that workout together, however using both the same machines on the floor instead of rotating, causing me to have to skip that part of my workout. I finally had a workout anytime open within a few blocks of my house, so switched to them only to leave there due to the fact that their machines were so close you could feel the sweat from the person on the machine next to you. Now I just have my own routine I do am home to keep myself fit.

I worked out this last Sunday at a Planet Fitness for the 1st time. I noticed these limitations immediately. It makes sense in today's culture however, and as long as I have choice, I frankly don't care. It's in the city near mine, and a place I'll visit to workout with a couple friends who live there. I cannot live without free weights, but I see the value of the many machines which my gym does not have. It could never be my main gym, but is perfectly fine for accessories, and has well maintained tanning, red light, massage machines, etc. You'll never notice a difference in people as long as you aren't being a jerk. Honestly though, I'm there because of friends 2 to 3 times a month. I do my heavy lifting at my gym, where everyone also gets along and isn't intimidated easily by anything, unlike those who need this gym (and most there could likely work out anywhere anyway). Exclusion never leads to acceptance, it only reinforces differences, so I'll never accept their philosophy. It's flawed. Planet Fitness is very easy to pop in, workout, and pop out quickly, but sort of feels like the vegan version of a gym, and way, WAY too much purple.

Hey Mitchell, regarding the physics of pulleys... I'll try to keep this brief. Static pulleys (don't move when the cable is pulled) do not decrease the force required to lift the weight. Dynamic pulleys (move with the weights when the cable is pulled) halve the apparent weight. So if there are 4 pulleys, but only two of them move it cuts the weight in half twice. The reason is that dynamic pulleys cause the cable to move a farther distance than the weight. So your limbs move the same distance, but the weight moves less, which requires less energy.

I have been to more than 60 PF locations. The primary problem with PF is not the equipment (or the almost never used lunk alarm, lol), it is the demographic it attracts because it is usually the low cost provider in a market. In small remote areas the demographic is fine, in large urban areas it is the default gym for rif raf, that trash the locker rooms and gym. Good point about the difference between a block and tackle and simple pulley system, every PF has one pull down cable that is a simple pulley, never understood why they have the one outlier. And the equipment models will vary from gym to gym, newer models will have more weight in the stack. There are tricks to hack the older machines to add more weight.
