Sometimes you can get dust/dirt in the smoke detectors and it sets them all off because they are all hard wired together. I live in AZ and this happens all the time. If you had windows open and fans on I’d almost guarantee this is what happened to you guys.

Paramedic here: hey, we don‘t care if someone has an emergency and is naked (except when you tell us, you were cleaning the bathroom naked and somehow fell and the toilet brush got stuck in your butt. Then we might smirk😂). We will feel empathy and get you blankets or help you to put on clothes. It is our job to help people in emergency situations and these happen no matter where you are, what you are doing and what you are wearing. Also we have seen so many people in different shapes and sizes naked, this normal and we literally don’t care. So don’t worry about us!

I’m glad you said that because my link worker or former link worker David Bagnall is his name he more or less when we were in space camp a few years ago and naturally you’re dealing with germ men or boys essentially and he will come in if we were changing and what not and this could be the morning time and it’s like he’s just so used to he doesn’t care he doesn’t make a big deal about it he just comes and says hello and just I love you I love him for it by the way I’m visually impaired and I use VoiceOver dictation so I apologise if this doesn’t sound consistent

I'm so glad it wasn't carbon monoxide (CO) ! When I was in high school I got migraines about 3-4 times a week that were so excruciating that I couldn't even open my eyes, so I had to go home sick a lot. I'd go home and go straight to my room on the second story and, sobbing in pain, go to sleep. This went on for months. One day my mom got nervous that she smelt rotten eggs. Carbon monoxide is odorless, but companies will add the rotten egg odor to make it noticeable. She called the fire department and they detected major levels of carbon monoxide in he house AND in our blood (they were able to do a test on the spot). So while I was having strange, frequent, unexplained migraines, I really had carbon monoxide poisoning. My room was on the top floor, where all heat rises to, directly above our furnace, so it had the highest CO levels. Where I would run to to seek relief was really making me more sick. The firemen said they'd never seen levels so high and someone survive it! Hearing you tell this story really gave me chills, I'm SO glad you and mama bee are safe!!!

Hey. Your experience is valid, but just to offer another perspective, I was an EMT from 2000-2020 and I absolutely felt as though the citizens in my county (and other counties) appreciated and valued my work. It wasn’t even just the people on the calls I ran, if I went to a restaurant or a grocery store in uniform people would thank my crew for their service. I was married to a police officer, and if you want to see a thankless job, do that. He would literally risk his life recovering stolen hand guns or breaking up child trafficking rings, and rather than being thanked, people would want to hold him accountable for some idiot cop’s behavior halfway across the country.

That was my thought too, though I expect guide dogs ate trained to help their handler evacuate in an emergency. My old collie do was terrified of smoke alarms to the point of freaking out as a half deaf elderly old boy when I was playing SIMS (quietly!) and the smoke alarm in the game went off.

Service dogs are trained to handle these things. My tiny chihuahua psychiatric service dog will at most just grumble and death glare at loud alarms, she’s almost bombproof. Thunderstorms are her weakness but I think it’s mostly from the loud water since she HATES water/getting wet unless she’s drinking it. Since Gallop is program trained and bred as opposed to owner trained, I would expect bombproof in terms of reactivity. He’s a good example of the quality of training from Mira for sure.

When it is extremely hot fire alarms can go off especially if you are in a humid area. Some fire alarms even have heat sensors. They probably need to invest in a ac system or ceiling fans and a central fan system. **edit** Fire alarms can also go off from wildfires.

That’s what I was going to say! We’ve had smoke alarms go off in our house when we’ve opened up the house at night with fans to try and cool it off when it’s very humid out. It’s woken us up in the middle of the night. Kinda scary. Gives me flashbacks to living in the apartments at college where someone would set off the alarm by vaping or burning popcorn once or twice a week.

I’m a paramedic and my husband is a police deputy so I very much appreciate your support. We do what we do because we care about people and what to help. I’ve taken care of a few blind patients and I have always tired to tell them everything that’s happening and what I’m going to do. I don’t know how if feels but watching your KZbin has helped me understand maybe a glimpse of it. Also we have see so many people naked that it doesn’t phase us. I just help them get clothes or wrap them in a blanket. I always went to keep my patients modest if at all possible. I want them to feel safe with me. Yes i think so too. We have like those 15 dollar smoke detectors, and once had one blaring in the middle of the night. And again, until in total 6 times . Totally unrelated to cooking or heat or anything... We once had an electrical fire so I was of course looking everywhere for a fire that wasn't there. Very scary! We threw the smoke detector out and got a replacement. They should have their system checked! Glad everything is fine! :D

No this is true , about two years ago when I was living in the city, it was late evening and I was hearing yelling outside. Which , for our area was normal. I got kind of nosy so I look outside and there is a HUGE house fire across the street , so I was trying to call for my partner and all I could muster out was "uhh, UHHH, THERES A FIRE OUTSIDE" . that's coming from me, having had a house fire in 2010, not only me but my brother had one two years back as well. So we don't always react the right way

In a newer house like that, the fire alarms are hardwired throughout the whole house and not the small battery operated ones. It could have been a few different things that set it off....electrical surge, short in the wiring....even if it's really hot in the house it can be set off.

My boyfriends alarm went off for three hours because the day got hot and humid. It needed to be disabled to make it stop. We duct taped the stupid thing after verifying it wasn't CO and walked around with hearing protection until someone could come disable it.

Kitchens (in the UK at least) have a heat detector instead of a smoke detector, so it could've been all the heat and humid, sticky air circulated by the fans/coming in through the windows that triggered the alarm perhaps. But either way, I hope you are and will be better. It's scary, emergency situations. ❤️

I'm wheelchair-bound and am about to get back into PT because I can't even transfer myself in and out of my chair by myself at all. One of my biggest fears is being in a situation where I'm in bed (on the other end of the house) and there's a fire, killer, etc and my Papa, whom I live with, can't get to me in time. We live way out in the country and when I had a tracheostomy in 2016, it malfunctioned (which we didn't know at the time,) I was legitimately dying, and the paramedics got there in the nick of time. I can emphasize with the feeling of vulnerability because you're way out in the middle of nowhere.

once in high school, the maintenance crew were deep cleaning before the end of the year, and the fire alarms kept going off all day long bc the dust they kicked up kept setting off the sensors in the alarms, making it think it was smoke. Could be that the owners of the house you're staying in just need to open up the smoke alarms and give them a good dusting.

That sounds so scary! Never feel bad for calling about something like that. I had a weird issue with my smoke alarm going off saying carbon monoxide warning and the fire department ended up coming to check it out. I was so embarrassed because it turned out to be a dying smoke alarm that was going crazy, but the guy said "if there's no problem then it makes our job a lot easier" and that made me feel better. There is no rule that you have to check everything out before you call, they're there to check for you in a potentially dangerous situation. Edit: just saw the end lf the video. I have a super basic smoke alarm and mine didn't so the "hey I'm dying" periodic beeps, it just went straight to carbon monoxide warning. My alarm doesn't use batteries, you have to get a new alarm.

1) Glad you all are safe! 2) You are absolutely right, everyone reacts differently in emergency situations. 3) Not an emergency quite to this level, but I was once at my bestie's house making stir fry and egg rolls with her daughter(7) and my brother(10). All of the sudden our stir fry catches on fire. Bestie is a doctor and super smart, so she gets the baking soda to try and put the grease fire out. Weirdly, this only made it a bigger fire poof instead of helping us. Anyway, while she was doing that, I ran to the living room area to usher the children out through the front door. As I yelled, "FIRE!'' and what do these monkeys do? THEY FREAKING JUMP ON THE COUCH to have a look and in unison shout "COOL!" So I shoved them out the front door, bestie grabs oven mitts and tosses a big lid to cut the fire's oxygen supply, then takes the pot and shoves it out through the back door. Everything was ok, except for the partly melted microwave above the stove lol. Needless to say we had a fire safety talk and review with the newly outed pyros we discovered we are related to lol

The baking soda probably was too fine and so it caught fire instead. I always use salt to smother grease fires

The best way to put out a grease fire, is to turn off the heat source, covering the flames with a metal lid or cookie sheet, if it's small, put baking soda or salt, you could also use a class b dry fire extinguisher, and never extinguish it with water.

I'm 56 and would have called 911 too! Such a weird situation. I read some of your comments and the extreme heat seems to be the most possible answer. I'm so glad that you had your mom and Gallop with you. It's more comforting to go through something like that when you have someone else there too. When something similar happened to me, the fire people did their checking then let us know it was probably a bug that crawled somewhere and got fried which was then too small to detect later or dust got stuck in the alarm. It being really hot out and you having fans may have picked up dust? So glad your okay now.

I had a similar experience! You mentioned it was a newer home, which leads me to believe their fire alarms are also new. I used to live in a home that was newly renovated with updated fire alarms, and the fire alarms would ALL go off (in every room because they were all synced together) if the air was too hot and thick. It happened quite a few times, even though they weren't "heat detectors", they were smoke detectors. Even my landlord had no idea why it happened. But it sounds like that's what might have happened with your situation as well. It is SCARY when it happens in the middle of the night, especially since I have twins who were just toddlers when we lived in that home. I'm sorry you had to go through such a traumatic experience! I'm wondering if the new smoke detectors in Canada had a faulty batch and that's why it happened, because it hasn't happened in our new house and we have the same smoke detectors here (and we've had some hot and humid days). Obviously it's not a definite answer, but its an idea on what happened!

Ah yes, I do have a similar story to this! I love your story times! My miniature attempt at a story time :) When I was about 9 or so (2009ish) we were also staying at a family friends lake house! I live in New Zealand, this is in NZ. I was sharing a bunk bed with my now - late aunty from the UK in a room with two bunk beds, I was on the top on the left. I also have a disability, like Molly, except I'm deaf, not blind! I have cochlear implants and take them out at night and have for most of my life, since about 8y/o ish onwards. Around 3am there was an alarm that went off which woke up everyone in the house, but (and I'd have to check with my mother who may remember) I believe it was actually coming from the neighbour's house, not the one we were in. And that went on for a while, and I think it might've gone off again later too, but I didn't know any of this until the morning! Everyone else was quite tired and grumpy/annoyed but I was fine! xD So thanks for this story time Molly, it made me laugh, the minute you mentioned alarms going off in a lake house in the middle of the night, I IMMEDIATELY thought of my own story and had a laugh! :) x

Hey Molly, first time commenter here but I had a similar experience a few years ago! In grad school I lived in an apartment with 2 roommates. The fire alarms in the living room were high tech and connected and at 3am they started going off (they would not only beep and light up, but also would talk and say “fire” repeatedly). So we all panicked and started looking for fire or smoke. All the apartments had outside access (no indoor hallways) so when we didn’t find smoke inside I stepped outside to see if any of our neighbors were out, see if I could spot a fire or smoke, and to listen for any other alarms going off too. It was of course just us struggling this early on a Tuesday, so I ended up calling the non emergency fire department number and they sent out two crews 😳. They turned it off and searched the whole place then left, 5 minutes later it started going off again and I had to call them back to help since there was no way for us to disable it ourselves. This time we asked to just have it removed and thankfully they agreed only because we each had another working alarm in all of our rooms. It was so scary thinking something was wrong, but it turned out the alarm had just malfunctioned. The complex replaced it the next day and we never had another issue. Hopefully a malfunctioning alarm is all it was for you too!

Though I wish we didn't need them and though they can freak us out like this sometimes, I'm thankful for the security systems we have now.

I totally understand the panic you were feeling. When I was a little kid, maybe 3 or 4, I opened the door to the garage to look for my cat and the burglar alarm went off. (it was like 6:45 in the morning) I was TERRIFIED. It starting beeping really loud then *screaming*. Like high-pitched, the world is ending screaming. It kept getting louder and louder. I calmed down after my mom turned off the alarm but I'm sure it was even scarier not knowing what the alarm was about

Molly!! I had a really hard week too, and PMSing on top of it... man it seems life can really throw us curve balls one on top of the other sometimes. Also, I was just telling my co-worker yesterday how when I lived with my aunt in my early 20s, I slept through a blaring fire alarm and her knocking and yelling my name (I strangely had the door locked). It wasn't an actual fire, IDK if she ever found out what triggered it. But I agree with commenter R N that it was probably so hot inside that it got triggered. There are amazing portable air conditioners these days, if they don't want an entire AC system it would probably be worth buying a few of those for their home!!

Outside city, squirels and mice often damage electrical wires, including alarm wires. If the fire detectors are wired ones (which would make sense as you say they were all making noise), it's possible that's what happened. When the mouse or squirel don't totally cut the wire, the contact is on, then off, then on, then off... That is something pretty common in rural living.
