Kura Does Things in the next season bryce's grave is struck by lightning, and when it is his consciousness leaks into the minds of millions in the nearby area, leading to a mass hive mind force. The characters are quickly chased out of town, towards the nearby lake area where they must deal with the apocalyptic society they now inhabit. Eventually they befriend a wise fisherman, and he shares his final catch before the outbreak: the gun stash the kids had hid in the lake. The next 4 episodes is them taking back the town and saving the world I wrote that as a joke but I would totally watch that despite not watching a single episode so far

It fascinates me how some groups of people can be so starved for characters like them that they will leech onto the first character they see that is remotely like them, ignoring awful things they do just because they get representation. I'm a huge LGBT supporter, but there is a very fine line between "This character is what I am therefore I shall stan" and "This character shares something in common with me, but I won't support them because they raped a guy with a broomstick."

Right it seems like they choose which people to help seemingly at random. They decided to forgive Tyler for literally trying to shoot up a school but didn't forgive Bryce for raping girls. Obviously, neither should be forgiven and both should receive the punishment they deserve, but they didn't do that and decided that Tyler did nothing wrong and he was just a poor troubled boy. They(the writers) even made Zach seem like the asshole for wanting to turn Tyler in, even though that is the completely sensible choice.
@kshatriya1414
@kshatriya1414 4 жыл бұрын
richhobo1216 With Tyler they wanted to highlight that if schools actually stopped bullies instead of punishing the ones who are bullied and actually implement a good mental health system at the schools things like school Shoo*ings could be prevented. They also wanted to show how just being a friendly person towards those in need you can actually make a huge positive impact on them.

@@kshatriya1414 yes, showing that being friendly to other can have a positive impact is a good message; but did they really had to do that with a school shooter? I mean, if Tyler was at the point to shoot the entire school and didn't plan to make it alive, he doesn't only need friends friend, but a profesional therapist. The idea that mental illness can be cured by teenagers is a bit dangerous.

Fijiivibes Well, to be brutally honest, this would never happen in real life even if 13 tapes were distributed to people who wronged the victim. The show makes it sound like suicide is a form of revenge (which it is not). And the way they treated Hannah’s motivation to kill herself is unrealistic too. Constantly the show says that bullying and peer pressure is the problem but it’s not just that. Mental health and family life are much more important for a child’s psyche.

The 13 Lessons I Learned from 13 Reasons Why 1. People suck and High School sucks. 2. Keep secrets from everyone. 3. Everyone’s problems should be your business. 4. Lie in court. 5. If I want to escape my problems, then I should do drugs. 6. If I get depression or have thoughts of self harm, I shouldn’t do everything in my power to seek help, but blame everyone. 7. If you disagree about someone’s political/religious views, label them as either crazy or something negative. 8. Embrace stereotypes affiliated with the type of person you are. 9. Rapists with no redeeming qualities or guilt for their actions are people too. 10. If I want to stop a school shooting, I should walk outside and confront the shooter. 11. If I want to get away with murder, I need the right crew. 12. Never learn a goddamn thing. 13. Avoid writing annoying characters like Ani and that one chick with glasses. (In all seriousness though, please do the exact opposite of all these lessons that the show’s clearly sadistic writers gave, minus the last one.)

You're 99.9% right. This show does not know what to teach teens, but... I'd have to disagree with two points: while yes, people who commit heinous acts *deserve* to not be redeemed, but the sad almost depressing fact of life is... even the most horrible people on this earth are still people, and they should be treated with as much professional help as possible. On that note: the school shooter scene: I will say, going up to a school shooter and talking to him while he has a gun in hand ready to shoot you is a dumb idea, but again, maybe that could work. I'm saying you should do it, don't do it, but maybe, just maybe talking to him and listening to his problems could work. By that I mean it could also end horribly. Those are just people, and I wish this series handled the issue of mental health way more properly.

The writers of this show should really be ashamed of themselves. When they’re not doing logistic gymnastics to justify continuing a story that ended two seasons ago, they’re making clumsy attempts to promote positive social attitudes (executed so poorly they end up communicating the exact opposite) and endorsing outright criminal behavior. That might be okay if they admitted the show was a trash opera and embraced it like Riverdale (or Dynasty, for the old folks), but acting like it’s some kind of PSA and they’re doing the world a favor by bringing these “important issues” to light is disgusting and unconscionable.

I don't think season 3 was necessary at all but these characters are so popular Netflix didn't want to let them go. That's the thing I had forgotten about with Tyler and the rest of the crew. They've essentially disliked him since season one, when they learned he was a stalker and took the photo of Hannah & Courtney (going so far as to omit him from the pact several of them made to keep Clay from finding out about Bryce raping Hannah via the tapes). Then, in season two, most of them don't even give a second glance to Tyler after he testifies in court about the goings-on at the school and he's almost forced into making new friends (cue the stereotypical punk rock-loving anarchist kids with an axe to grind about the establishment).

Because he's her friend. *internally screams* And let's not get started on how this show attempts to justify murder- and even shows them getting away with it in s4- after pretending to have some sort of moral code. Sad.

I feel like this season would’ve been better if Bryce didn’t go through a redemption arc and the season instead focused on a detective trying to solve the mystery of who killed him. Think about it: the show built up Bryce as a throughly unlikable person where practically everyone has something against him, whether it be tormenting them, beating them up, and even raping them, all the while escaping major punishments thanks to his untouchable status. This would give the detective a difficult case to solve as he or she would have a big list of suspects that all have a reason to off Bryce, some bigger than others. But that’s just me anyway.

I think that the reason Bryce's joke of a redemption arc was doomed to fail this season was because of how ridiculous it was in regards to the consistency of the character. It was as if he had an entirely different set of writers in season 3 compared to the last two, because the shift from narcissistic serial rapist without conscience to misunderstood kid who made some mistakes and just wants to make amends was...unexpected, to say the least. This did not feel like an organic change in any way, shape or form and just made for uncomfortable viewing. There is nothing wrong with writing a redemption arc for an antagonist, when it's done well, that is. I think Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Legend of Aang is my favourite example of how one can successfully write a three dimensional villain or anti-hero because from the very beginning we were shown Zuko's humanity, whether it was through his insecurities, his mistakes, his motivations, the love he had for his uncle, etc. This added nuance to the show and ultimately allowed for an organic character development that lead to a successful redemption arc because the show forced you to look deeper than what you could see on the surface with not only Zuko but all of its main characters. Now, Bryce Walker on the other hand could never have worked as a multi-layered, complex anti-hero by season 3, because it was so clear in seasons 1 and 2 of 13 Reasons Why that *he was never supposed to be one.* He was completely one dimensional with no nuance, just a very easy to hate, easy to swallow villain. We were never given any indication that this guy was anything other than a monster, nor were we given any insight into his thoughts, emotions or any other human facet of his character. It's not a villain trope I'm particularly fond of since it's pretty shallow but it is tried and tested, it works if that's what you're going for. So to establish someone as a cookie cutter, all around evil villain for 2 whole seasons, only to all of a sudden decide to make them human? It just can't work, you can't force in nuance that was never there in the beginning. The thing is, I genuinely really liked Bryce as a character in season 3, or rather, I would've liked him a lot more/felt more comfortable liking him had it not been so fucking weird and next to impossible reconcile him with the comparably unrecognizable version of him in the last two seasons. Bryce should've been just left alone as the awful rapist in this case, even though I think writing more than 1 season of this awful show was a mistake in itself. Side note: Maybe this is tOo PoLiTiCaL but...I actually think that making Bryce an entitled, spoiled but otherwise human and most importantly, potentially redeemable character *from the get go,* as in, from Season 1, would've actually made the entire show more interesting since you're creating more opportunities for the show itself as well as up a relatively untouched point of discourse. But that's just me, I like when shows explore the grey in what appear to be black and white issues. *I'm not defending rapists but at the same time, the media doesn't really discuss the grey areas when it comes to some instances regarding consent, eg: inebriated or intoxicated sexual encounters, change of mind mid-intercourse and other often unclear cases of whether consent was given or not, and all I'm saying is it would've been interesting to see a show tackling this, that's all.* But we didn't get any of that because the plot was never written intending to explore any interesting avenues. I think I probably expected too much from a Netflix original based off a crappy book lmao.
@nanalove3819
@nanalove3819 4 жыл бұрын
Same. I'm not against a redemption arc, but the way it is made... it is just... stupid? Like, I'm supposed to believe that the guy who proves in season 1 and 2 that he has no regrets, that he doesn't care about anyone but himself, will suddenly feels regrets? And why, because being bullied open his eyes? If that type of person is being bullied for their bad actions, they will think it is unfair, not that they may have done something wrong. That's the problem when someone creates a character that is meant to be a stereotype or has only one function (here, be the villain), and all of a sudden decides after a few seasons that the character should not be one-dimensional. I'm not saying it is impossible, but realy hard, and needs a quality of writing that they probably don't have if they created this type of character in the first place (except if their writing improved, but in this show... no). It's sad because it was actually an interesting question (is there people that can't change or don't deserve redemption?), but the way it is made can't work.

The plot of the season should have just been "Bryce is dead. Who killed him?" Not flashbacks implying that his parents not loving him somehow made him a rapist even though it didn't. He chose to be one. The show acting like him hypocritically calling out Monty for raping Tyler, standing up for his mother against his granddad, banging Ani and crying during a yoga session somehow made up for him raping multiple women was sick. And you're right. Him going from remorseless serial rapist who got boners at the mere thought of it to a supposed "misunderstood victim" was a retcon not character development.

Tbh I don't think we can put Bryce Walker and Prince Zuko on the same plane. I absolutely loved Zuko's redemption arc, but it isn't hard to forgive him when his only flaws were being an edgy teenager that was angry at the entire world because he tried to do something good but ended up getting burned (literally) for it. Bryce is an entirely different story; he raped dozens of girls and traumatized them forever. He drove one to suicide and was just a complete asshole all around. He was comically evil, as some people described. It's difficult coming back from that. The creators definitely could have made Bryce more complex and likeable, but I see no possible way to give him a proper redemption arc, because he cannot be redeemed.

Justin’s character was so overlooked this season. In the end of season 3, he talks about how he was sexually abused when he was really young and when he was on the streets. I mean this is a huge deal... but no one talks about it? They act as if he didn’t exist. Not to mention his issues with drugs, dealing, and his mom’s bf. It’s not solved at all. And in season 1, they had perfect opportunities to show Bryce as ‘a human’ or show both sides to his characters. They had the chance to talk about Justin’s sexual abuse especially when his gf was being raped.

I think the big reason why the “horrible people are still people” argument usually falls flat is because, while bad people often come from bad families, not everyone that comes from a bad family becomes a bad person. Some become VERY good people because they don’t want to put others through what they’ve been through. Saying “they became bad because of bad families” not only does a disservice to the people who became good despite their families, but it also encourages people to succumb to their poor upbringing. “It’s okay if you’re bad, you came from a bad family after all. Blame them for all your bad actions instead of blaming yourself and possibly learning to be a better person.” Yet another horrible lesson taught by this “educational” show.
@fellinuxvi3541
@fellinuxvi3541 4 жыл бұрын
Good analysis, but I wouldn't call it "horrible people are still people". That one seems more to have more to do with compassion or not "sinking to their level", whereas the argument you describe is more in line with moral determinism, where people are believed to have no choice in the kind of person they'll become, resulting in them just being a product of circumstance.
@fellinuxvi3541
@fellinuxvi3541 4 жыл бұрын
@TrolleyXLakers __ You bring an interesting point. People usually take the circumstances approach only in trauma, as if bad experiences automatically make you a bad person (which is an obvious strawman), but in reality, circumstances affect you in many different ways, they teach you lessons and instruct you in the way you act.
@1999_reborn
@1999_reborn 4 жыл бұрын
Winged Mirage This is a bad point. Yes, most people who come from bad families don’t become rapists. But that doesn’t make environment any less of a factor. You’ll see what I mean if I use smoking as an analogy. Most people who smoke cigarettes don’t get cancer but that doesn’t mean smoking doesn’t cause cancer. It just means that there are other genetic and environmental factors that determine whether or not the smoking will cause cancer in that specific person. First of all it’s important to note that “bad family” is an extremely broad category. Not all bad families are the same. A household with a father who molests the children is different from one where the parents are drug addicts which is different from one where your older siblings are gang members, etc... These are all “bad families” but each will influence the kids differently. So saying that you know someone who came from a bad family but didn’t become a bad person doesn’t tell us anything because every “bad family” is different. Next, people respond differently to similar environments. Why is this? Part of it is genetics and part of it is itself more environment. Someone who’s genetically more resilient will deal with abuse better than someone who isn’t. For an environmental example someone who is getting abused at home but has good friends has a better chance than someone who is getting abused at home and has no friends. And this doesn’t just apply to people who end up bad. This is also for people who end up good. Good people are just as much products of their environment as bad people. And for the people who were raised in bad environments but turned out good, there will be other factors that explain why despite having some bad influences they were still able to overcome it. An easy example is maybe you grew up in a shitty home with shitty parents and a shit education but you had a sister who cared about you a lot and was a role model and looking up to her allowed you to overcome the other bad influences. It’s a combination of different factors. I think if two people had the same genetics and exactly the same environment and life experiences, they would end up exactly the same.

It also gives genuinely awful people ammunition to use against others. "Look, it's not MY fault, my mommy beat me/I was molested/I missed the ice cream man that one time!" Sad fact is, some people are just inherently no matter how good a home life they had.

Agreed! Especially in fiction, when a character acts, they should ideally earn either reward or punishment. Having a bad guy, who is never convincingly redeemed, never be punished, and have the narrative treat him in a rewarding manner? That’s really frustrating for an audience. We want people to be held accountable for the good or the pain the inflict on others. It’s just bad writing

The idea of who killed the rapist could have been a interesting one if they just throw away all pretenses of redemption with him. Just have a good old mistery in which everyone can be a suspect because he was such a horrible person that everyone has a reason. The season might not have been as controversial, but it could have been a decent one without such a shitty message in the end.

C VR I thought it was interesting and maybe I was the only one but I kind of thought the point was that he wasn’t redeemable no matter how much you could try to make him with his story and him being “sorry” that he was just a terrible terrible person and his anger at Zach and his the world won’t let me change we’re just proof that he didn’t get it that he thought he was entitled to redemption if he just followed the right steps but failed to see that no one “deserves” redemption you don’t earn it it has to be given like throughout all the humanising scenes there we these bits where he would reveal how entitled he was and that he could never truly be sorry or be better because he thought he deserved to be forgiven I don’t know maybe it’s just me who saw that

@hkazu63 4 жыл бұрын
I’d say, if this was season 2 and not 3, it would’ve been a lot more palatable. It wouldn’t have been great, but his struggles and humanising moments would’ve been more tolerable if we hadn’t been treated to 2 seasons of him being an over the top super villain beforehand. It’s kind of too-little-too-late in both scenarios, but if he was super villain in season 1, humanised and killed in season 2, that’s more tolerable bc it means that from the start of the narrative opening up, we see other sides of him.

Your predictions for Season 4 were pretty spot on. Clay spends most of it severely hallucinating and disassociating, and talking to a therapist. Except in the final episode he says he didn't actually see ghosts (except he did, because he thinks a dummy is real). But then it turns out he's got depression and anxiety (which while nothing to sniff at hardly describe the extent of Clay's mental health problems).
