When I paint wheels, I put a piece of newspaper on my pneumatic shop stool then set the wheel to be painted on the stool. I can then spin the wheel and hole the paint can practically still. Never get runs and seems to help get in the nooks and crannies. I do like the card trick instead of masking which takes forever. End result, looks great!!

You are right. One thing not talked about is that black wheels make the rims look smaller. You paint 20 inch rims black and they look 18, and they emphasise the void between the tire and the car

That is an incredible improvement! The wheels look brand new, at least on camera, and the whole car looks fresh. I'm of an age where black wheels were poverty spec on a car. Cars need a certain amount of jewelry to set off the lines and bring the car design to life. Well done indeed. That colour looks very much like the argent silver that was used as an accent on some cars in the 60s and 70s. I have a set of 15 inch Virgo alloys on the old Volvo wagon. I will be doing this to those wheels at some point. The factory grey is looking a bit tired, but easily forgiven when you figure the wheels are nearing 40 years old on a car that is almost 32 years old. Great inspiration.

Vinegar and salt water in a garden sprayer and target the stalk of the plant specifically. Don't overspray or you'll kill your grass. Rinse out the sprayer when your done. Works great on vines and stickers here in the south...

Recommendation: set up a couple of saw horses topped with a plank. Set the tire on the plank. Now the tire is upright and the spray can is upright so you will get all the paint and avoid bending over. Just roll the wheel along the plank to easily cover all the nooks and crannies. Save your back and get better coverage!

My ‘83 MB 300D had silver wheels, and I refinished those myself- they came out great. Like you, black wheels aren’t my thing, but I always loved those gold BBS wheels they used on BMW’s back in the 80’s/90s.

Back injuries are no joke. I've had herniated discs in my lower back since I was 29 after being rear ended by 2 cars at a crosswalk. Take a break for a few weeks ,or if you can't, take many many small breaks in-between your project.

This will seem age related since I'm almost twice your age, but I agree completely. The only set of black wheels(gloss steel) I have ever owned was in the late 90's on a matte tan off-road truck with white letter tires. Other than that, nope to black!!

The only black wheels I have had were on a base 72 Dodge Dart in poverty spec, dog dish hubcaps and all. It was so poverty spec there was no factory radio, no power steering, unassisted 4 wheel drum brakes, and a foot pump for the windshield washers.

I am so glad i didnt go down the black rim path. I read a comment it is hard to clean, takes detail oit of the rims and makes the car look floaty. I was done..couldnt unsee it after hearing that. I got darker silver on my car and def happy with it.

I did the same to my black spare a couple of years ago. It looked great when I finished and while it sat in the boot, but once on the car I think the wheel cleaner I used dissolved the clearcoat. The wheel is now dark grey with a rough texture.

You hit the nail on the head. Once. Black wheels became a factory option and there was a bunch nightwing dark wing shadows on a mom mobile it’s over. Gunmetal or smoked chrome seem to be timeless. Thanks bro, I feel asleep on the couch last night doing my research about painting over black wheels. I bought some 22’s this past weekend for a good deal except they’re black and the car is also black. But I currently have 20” AMG s63 wheels on my s550 (gray alloy) and only wanted larger. Never another color. And you’re the only KZbinr that covered my exact situation. So now i’m off to accomplish this task with confidence. It’s great that the wheels are off the car already. Out of my surviving friends, only one guy likes gray an at least 10 people more stated black. So I’m guessing it’s not played out but it’s most definitely not my style. NEVER!!! Maybe if I owned a new colorful Ferrari or Lamborghini, I’ll try it. But as today stands, ohhhh nooooo 🤨

The real reason silver paint wasn't popular until the '90s was that it sucked. It didn't adhere, wore off easily, didn't stay shiny (no clearcoat), checked, and was difficult to get good results with in the first place. Then 2 stage urethanes came along in the late '80s and life got much better.
