I think I actually cried the other day, I had way too many tomatoes in a pot, all pots were full, I had 3 I had “get rid of”. I laid them gently in the trash bin. Walked away. Then went back and planted them in a washed up yogurt container! I get it Jess, I do!

This is why I end up with way too many tomatoes every year- I just can't kill them! Last year, I sat dozens of extra Amish paste plants out by the road with a sign "free tomato plants". They were gone in 5 minutes. I hope they made someone's summer a little happier. :)

I also do not like thinning seedlings and try not to over sow, but when I need to, I warmly thank the seedlings that are being removed (“Thank you for your service. You are appreciated for the work you have done.”). I also will ask which seedling is willing to volunteer to leave, and often feel a mental nudge towards particular ones. I’m sure all this sounds weird to most people, but it works for me, and most especially it keeps me focused on being thankful and respectful as I return each little plant life to the earth from whence it came, understanding that it’s a big circle of life and those little lives will come back around again.

I recently figured out what I had been doing wrong with brassica’s… I was starting them along with everything else in the spring, but our springs are super short and get hot quickly. So this year, I am holding off starting them until mid-late July and hopefully will have a harvest this fall. 🤞🏻
@selecttravelvacations7472
@selecttravelvacations7472 Жыл бұрын
The problem with that in my area is it’s 90’s & hotter until September which is hard to get them going in July, august too since they usually need cool weather to germinate. I tried starting some in early September, they did well until it got too cold at end of Oct. Timing is everything.

Same problem here in Perth, Australia - we have a hot summer and Mediterranean (/Californian) climate, though it hardly freezes in winter; so next year I'm thinking about starting a few brassicas indoors during the summer to try succession planting for that short autumn (fall) garden ... 19:50 Oh, dear! The dahlia tuber you broke off will not grow into a plant, it will just rot because it’s no longer connected to the crown. The tuber is the food source for the plant but without a piece of the crown (base of the stem) that has an “eye” on it, it has no chance at growing anything but tiny white root hairs. I highly recommend using shears or a knife to carefully divide your dahlias instead of breaking them, making sure there is a piece of the crown still connected to the tuber.

I think one avenue to explore is to just spend reflective time in your garden spaces and imagine you are in Versailles 😉Discover the flow that people naturally take when traveling through the space and decide to go with it or to guide people down a different path. Then feel the nooks, crannies, trellises etc. Sit in the center and look at the horizon to see what you don't want to block and then middle ground for the same and close by for the same etc. As you turn the corners of the raised beds, look out to see what is there as a focal point and decide if you want a little hoop trellis to showcase that focal point or if you want a more panoramic view, etc. You are an artist so I have no doubt that you will be able to bring feeling and joy into your space. I am so excited to see it evolve. ☺

You are right: when the center of a strawberry gets black, it got frost and you should take these flowers off. They will not produce, but instead take away energy from the plant that could go into the growth of new flowers.

🌸 bird bath location - perhaps away from the human use area in a newly created bird garden perhaps? My 2 cents worth so you could have bird feeders hanging / installed in such garden and your bird bath as the centre piece... My reasoning behind that suggestion is to not feed or have birds gather on mass, to poop all over your seating and beautiful black structures... We feed our wild street birds on the driveway (our car is in the garage) the driveway is on the opposite side side of the house from the clothes line ( New Zealand - most backyards have the rotary clotheslines) Feed the birds or have bird structures away from stuff you don't want poop all over. 🌸 Pip

Thank you Jess, I share your passion. We have a local food pantry that offers frozen grou d beef and fresh eggs. Everything else is heavily processed stuff. We implemented a cooking class to learn how to use "real" food. The class was cancelled due to lack of interest. Two two local gardeners donate from the abundance of their gardens; generally this fresh real food is not taken. This year the gardeners have connected with a local soup kitchen and will be growing and donating specific vvegtables and fruit that the chef can incorporate into the menus.

Welcome new gardeners to learning tomato math lol. Every year I'm always trying to figure out how many seeds to sow and make sure I have enough space in my tiny seed starting space in our shed. The only time I wouldn't reuse a seed starting cell with soil is if I've had some kind of issue that may spread like fungus gnats. If I'm waiting on hot peppers to germinate, sometimes I've waited a couple of weeks for germination because they really like warmth and won't germinate until that soil is consistently above 70°F/21°C. I made the mistake of being impatient with habanero germination, and planted a sweet banana pepper in it's place. The pepper that ended up germinating was the habanero and it was planted with my sweet peppers that year.

Those damaged dippum n butter things are still good for eating even with some of that damage. You can also boil them, scrape the "meat" out of the leaves and heart and make spinach/artichoke dip ( which I do also freeze). On the dahlias, make sure you have a tuber with a body, a neck and an eye or it won't produce a plant and flower. Broken necked tubers can be tossed. God Bless.

I don't like wasting food, so to me thinning seedlings is wasting food. I absolutely love your garden, I would love to come visit someday.

I thought I was totally weird by feeling bad every time I thin my plants. Glad to know that I have company in my weirdness 😂.

Yeah, me too!. I've sowed like 100 eggplant seeds. All of then germinated and I'm trying to plant as many as them possible.

I was joking yesterday that my collard greens had a meeting over the weekend and decided they were all going to seed at once. Boom!

This is the first year I've ever started seeds and I went hog wild with multiple seeds in the cells and just like YES THE MORE THE MERRIER HAHAHA!! And then they started sprouting and it was so many and I actually cried while thinning them out. I replanted as many as I could but I have such limited space. I was beyond devastated. I showed my husband the tomato sprouts laying in a pile and I cried again. What a terrible way to learn this lesson.

My Grandmother planted a Fig tree 3 yards away from her back door sidewalk. Years later it grew up and over the walkway and made the most awful mess every year. You couldn't walk near the yard or backdoor without tracking smashed figs all over.

Funny...I have grown potatoes, harvested them and then dug out the bed to the bottom, meticulously went through all the soil, refilled the bed and STILL gotten potatoes the next year.

It's been a long winter in Minnesota this year. It's been getting into the upper 40's this past week but I still have a fair amount of snow on my yard. (Which I hadn't seen since November). The waiting is hard.

I'm always into learning about native plants and appreciated seeing the turnip plant that has bolted. I recogniized the flower and flower stem right away. We must have wild turnip here because I often see those flowers.

Radish pods are so good. If you have tried them you should they are great in salad. Also, we love sautéing them with greenbeens and onions.

I think we all have this same problem. Feeling like we’re throwing away so much food. Tomatoes especially, just want to live. This is my first year I actually threw a bunch of seedlings away. Just because I need to save money on soil. It didn’t feel good!

Save those seeds and sprout em in the winter for sandwiches and salads or feed em to the chickens as a snack! If it's too early to succession sow or put out the warm weather plants
