Love the way this video format came out. It felt more like listening to a friend instead of a KZbinr/ Influencer. We have a huge sectional we got from Weatherby's back in 2012, and it's a pretty good couch, but when my oldest was going through a big jumping phase, he popped some springs in one corner of it. We have a pillow shoved in there, but no one really sits in that area now except the dog. We're kind of scared to buy anything newer made, and have to replace it in just a couple years down the road.

THIS VIDEO IS EVERYTHING. I work as an interior designer and new furniture tends to be horrible quality - especially sofas which is so disheartening because it’s such a big purchase. Getting something vintage or antique is usually a good bet as the frame is solid wood. If you can find a sofa with 8 way tied springs that is the best so that the structure and support of the sofa lasts over time since the springs stay in place. It honestly makes me so fucking annoyed that companies like West Elm sell that crap for so much. UGH. Also look on Apartment Therapy’s marketplace for a peacock chair - you might find one there.

My entire family works or has worked at IKEA, myself included. There are some definite hits and misses. The Kivik is a hit for sure! The main tip I have for anyone looking for a fat friendly couch is this: avoid skinny legs and slipcovers. We have the Stocksund sofa at home, it has both of those things, and it's a major disappointment. Next time I'm shopping for a couch, I'm going to focus on something boxier. It's annoying because I love the chic, classic styles of some sofas, but from experience they've never lasted long. :\ EDIT: Forgot to mention, the Klippan is the BEST couch Ikea sells IMO. We use them in the Ikea break rooms - imagine Ikea's hundreds of employees of various ages and sizes using them for years and years. They were hella comfortable, and despite all of their use they stayed sturdy and nice looking. Next time I'm shopping for a couch I'll probably get one of my own.

Thank you so much for this! For anyone who hates their bed frame, I recommend the Zinus SmartBase from Amazon or the company themselves. I'm about 300 pounds, with a 170-190 pound fiance, and we love it. You don't need a box spring set, just the mattress itself. It can also hold several hundred pounds and is dead silent. You can also make it a mattress size larger by buying another twin piece for it. And you can fit a lot of junk under it!

My husband and I have been together for 19 years and we've never had new furniture [unless you count a bed as furniture, we've had a single new one of those in all that time] -- *all* of our stuff has been hand-me-downs and secondhand. I'm totally over it. The loveseat we have now has had broken springs for *years* and I have to sit on it with loads of blankets and pillows stuffed inside and it's still sooo uncomfortable [especially since I'm disabled with back issues]. Once my mom moves out of our house and we have enough room again we're getting a new couch and I. CAN'T. WAIT. Alas, the nearest Ikea is 3-4 hours away so we'll have to go around to all the local furniture places and try things out, which will be quite the ordeal.

Judging from your IKEA trip, I think you'd hate our couch as its from the early 1960s and doesn't have a ton of cushion to it. BUT totally agree on the quality of furniture declining. Our "grown-up" furniture that we are slowly buying is all from the 50s and 60s and made of solid wood (mostly walnut). It's not cheap....but it's cheaper than West Elm (who has ripped off the designs), and I know it's lasted 60 years thus far, so I have more confidence in it. I've never understood why people would pay 2 or 3x as much for something that I could get from an estate sale that's actually authentic to the time period and made of wood, not particle board.

My husband and I buy most of our furniture(tables, bed frame, desks) from Ikea and the bed has surprised me the most. Combined we're probably 550 lbs. This king frame has done it's job! We looked at couches and got dreamy-eyed over a HUGE sectional but our wallets couldn't handle it. It was definitely an insta approved couch, too😢 BUT we lucked out and found a large, linen sectional that seats 5-7 people for under $800. We definitely went more for comfort but it's not an eyesore by any means. 👌❤️ Always love hearing about other brands of furniture, clothing, mattresses that support plus sizes!

When I first moved into my tiny little 1940s bungalow, I started a really intense search for the perfect couch. I collected reviews, studied home design magazines, and researched materials, brands, best dimensions (I'm on the large size, my living room is not), colours, cushion types, arm types, leg types, and learned about different styles. I was thinking "long-term investment" and Ikea wasn't even a consideration. And then? I "temporarily" took an old couch that my mom was getting rid of because she preferred her boyfriend's couch. It was an Ikea love seat, old enough that they weren't making that model anymore, leather-bound and nothing removable or washable, and I basically crossed my fingers that it wouldn't fall apart under me before I found "my" couch, especially when I ended up sleeping on it for over a month while having work done on my bedroom. That was 6 years ago. This thing? Is awesome. I'm holding onto it as long as it lasts! As a bonus, Mom gave me the matching reclining armchair and ottoman. They're all showing a certain amount of wear from the nieces and nephews, but hey, I knit throws and have a tray that fits on the ottoman, so it's easy enough to cover up scuffs and spills if I feel the need. When it goes, I'm definitely heading to Ikea first.

I totally agree with you about the quality of furniture going down, I've had my current couch for about 12 or 13 years and even though I'm sick of the style and it needs a really good deep cleaning I am really hesitant to buy something else. I bought a fairly expensive armchair four years ago and I cannot believe how quickly it fell apart. Like, within one year I could feel the metal framework inside the arms, and I had to re-stuff the seat cushion because it completely flattened out. Also, I'm really excited about your channel's changes and the new kinds of content that you're going to be creating. I think the old influencer-style channels are having a slow decline and most of us are more interested in seeing an honest look at other people's lives. @@vintageortacky I might be able to - it's one of those projects that seems intimidatingly complex but is probably simple if you run into the right expert. It does have all loose cushions for the seat back, which makes it really comfortable but also it tends to look sloppy really quickly. Yes! Our couch is practically 20 years old and the cushions have really shrank; but the couch is still in good condition. They just don't make stuff like they used to so we don't want to replace it. We've gotten our cushions restuffed once, they probably need it again. But I bought a brand new $500 rocking chair from BabiesRUs when I was pregnant and it's great, super comfy; but now it leans to one side, it's not even 3 years old. My brand new desk chair from Nebraska Furniture Mart; broke down in the first 6 months, the fabric has come undone and it leans to the left now, it's very weird. But so disappointing; because office chairs are not cheap!!

i am 49 years old. as an adult, i have purchased 2 couches. both were used. both were $100. i have been given several other hand-me-down couches. we need to replace our current one as our dog that recently had to be put to sleep, had bladder issues before she went and she laid on the couch. i wish i could afford to get one like you did. also, i have never been to an ikea. i hear they are awesome.

I relate to this story so much. When we renovated our house, I wanted that perfect HGTV reveal. Luckily we picked a good couch, I remember how exhausting it was finding a couch I was comfortable sitting on.

I can totally relate to this story. My hubby and I are pleasantly plump and for 6 glorious years we had an ikea karlstad sectional. We loved it so much. We would take naps on it all the time. Then we got the bright idea of “upgrading” to a chic more adult looking couch. On impulse we went to a furniture store in May, and bought a mid century couch and armchair. At the store it felt comfortable, but when I got it delivered I automatically knew that I hated it. A couple months later, I felt the springs through the fabric and it’s so uncomfortable. Definitely not made for plus sized folks. Needless to say, I regret giving away my original couch considering that ikea discontinued it. Now I’m trying to sell my new couch. So learn from me don’t buy on impulse. On the flip side, I was looking into the kivik. You’ve definitely convinced me that this is our next couch!

My husband and I just bought a condo and have spent the last month trying to find furniture. We wanted stuff that was nicer but simple. We ended up going with Macy’s because they were one of the few places that had a couch that was simple in style and affordable. We were shopping right around Christmas/New Years which helped us price wise, and it’s our first “new” couch. But I’m so glad I went in and sat on it for a while before we bought it. Our old couch was comfy as hell but drove me CRAZY because the cushions were all sewn to the body of the couch. IMPOSSIBLE TO CLEAN!

We bought a Bassett sectional couch back in 2003 in Germany and we still have it to this day. It's been through three boys and 5 animals. When we got back to the States, the only reason I bought the house that we're in right now is because it was the only house that the couch could fit in the living room. Hard to believe but it still looks brand new. At the time it cost $2,700..... well worth the price.

Something to consider with older furniture styles that are sturdier, is people didn't hang out on that furniture as much as we do now, for like Netflix and chill and that kind of thing. I think it older pieces longer not only because better quality/sturdier construction, but because people used it less. They spent a lot more time outside. Less time like vegging out on the sofa=longer lasting sofa. I know that I have a pair of sixty-year-old wingback chairs that are in great shape ; they do need recovered which I'm planning on doing for my birthday and I'm just going to keep getting them recovered and (and re-stuffed if I need to) probably for the rest of my life because they're great quality and they hold up well over time. I have done the same with my Victorian couch. It has a low partially-stuffed-partially-wood back that helps me sit up straight which is nice. I had it recovered in a fun fabric recently. Of course, that's not "influencer" style but is my taste. I'm happy to see you branching out with new content Cora! Your channel, your taste.

I have a Tidafors from Ikea that has lasted 5+ years and is still going strong. It's not the best thing to look at, but stick a few scatter cushions on it and it's fine. Incredibly comfy (memory foam) and people love to sleep on it. My dad weighs 250+ lb and he's never had a problem with it.

Losing weight is not fun or easy. I hate when people try to say “if only you tried harder.” 😳 But, I’m finally having some success with the new WW and walking every day. We just got a new couch and I’m obsessed with it. If you can find someone who sells Jonathan Louis when you’re ready for a new one, we love ours. Only took a couple months for delivery for custom made that didn’t break our bank account.

Our bodies are so varied and what works for some doesn’t work for all. I focus on healthly habits, not size or weight. I was delighted by how my health improved after breaking up with diet culture. You might enjoy the She’s All Fat podcast, particularly their episodes of exercise and movement. Love those babes! Back to furniture, thank you so much for the recommendation!!! I’m hoping one day to buy a house and slowly replace our sturdy couch!

We have the IKEA FRIHETEN which turns into a bed and has storage in the chaise part. It looks nice, and as a bed it's pretty good but it's not really for heavy people (which we are) We had it 1 year then got it tightened/reinforced because the sides of it were creaky and slowly separating. It's a little low for tall people (I'm 5'10") but not bad. Cora a tip for squishy cushions: I purchased cushion covers at the thrift store (look for a king size pillow sham) and that make the cushions less floppy and more supportive. The absolute best sofa we use as a sofa/bed is the original IKEA TROMSNES day bed. (avoid the newer black/gold version they discontinued, it sucked! ) It's white metal. If you can ever find it, grab it! It's SUPER sturdy, solid metal and with some plywood on top of the slats that thing can hold multiple big people!

@@vintageortacky I take the existing sofa cushion (in our case the FRIHETEN) and squish the whole thing (with it's original cover)into a king size pillow sham. I can email you a photo of the shams I got if that helps?
