To clarify for some of the other viewers, sean was able to gain control of sauron because of how expropriate is worded for two big reasons. 1. Ward/shroud/hexproof are three keyword abilities that affect the targeting of a permanent. If a spell or ability doesnt *explicitly* use the word “target” then there is nothing being targeted, the spell just keeps happening as written and in the order of effects as written on the card completely bypassing those abilities. 2. To clarify why the ward costs didnt need to be paid further, the cards chosen through expropriate are chosen after the spell has already started resolving (because the players dont vote unless the spell has already begun resolving). Ward is worded “when this permanent becomes the target of a spell or ability, *counter that spell or ability* unless its ward cost was paid. Since the spell was mid resolution at the time sauron was chosen, ward would be unable to counter the spell. Once a spell has started resolving, no players have priority no other actions can be made by players unless specified and no state based actions are checked and no abilities can be put onto the stack until the full instructions of the spell have resolved and the card is placed into its appropriate zone (battlefield for permanent spells, graveyard or if instructed exile for non-permanent spells usually). Any triggers that might occur in the middle of a spell resolving wait patiently in a sort of limbo state until state based effects are checked (which means “at any point a player could gain priority”)

This might be a meta comment but every single time I've played against an ovika deck it annihilated the table be wary of people playing it. In this case he didn't even use his commander so it's more of just red blue being strong buti think ovika decks are just built powerful as hell.

Yes, because ward and shroud affect the ability to target a creature, but Expropriate doesn't target. It just says "choose a permanent". If it said "gain control of target permanent that opponent controls", Sauron couldn't be targeted because of the greaves.

Always let other players take their missed may triggers if it won't change game state too much. The alternative is everyone playing slow to make sure they don't miss any triggers, which isn't fun for anyone.

I'm new to the game relatively speaking. When Expropriate was played why didn't Ray choose Money and wait till the permanent was chosen and in response just sacrifice that permanent instead of all of them?

13:56 I think you guys are misplaying on this mechanic. The cards Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora auto trigger. The only way you miss it is by misplaying. The cards give responsibility mostly to the caster of the spells. They are forced to make a decision about whether they're going to pay for the spells they've cast. The cards state: Whenever an opponent casts a (Noncreature) spell You may draw unless that player pays (4) or 1 in Rhystic study's case. Obviously magic isn't as easy as that as responsibility usually falls on the owner of said card to enforce its rules considering not every player knows every card. However, the card explicitly designates a large degree of responsibility to the caster of each spell that would trigger it. Stating that this player MUST either announce that they are paying for the spell they've cast or not paying. Skipping past this step is as unfair to the owner of the card as it is to the viewers of this game. It's a different thing if you're playing in a LCS with people you don't know and you're all learning. I expect a higher standard from the good folks at IHYD.

Great vid as always but personally didnt enjoy this game, felt like Sean was really slow rolling there at the end. And the hemming and hawing seemed in bad faith like at 23:50 “I was going back and forth, is this a good time to cast this?” like… bru. And 23:44 “oh i am going to get an extra turn” as if they thought he was going to choose money after they’ve spent 5 min talking about how hes going to take an extra turn no matter what. Taking 10 min to resolve Expropriate and wouldn’t ya know the Expropriate gamer won. Personally would’ve rather scooped it up if no one had interaction to save 30 min and play another game.

The card did not have the target keyword. Choose does not count as a keyword that targets

I'm only 21 min in but allowing Sean to keep THREE creature etb dmg effects in a deck revolving around creatures etb'ing is fucking wild "but i already took 15 dmg" boohoo mfer you're Roastmaster is dead. Like there was way too much going on in that board for Ray's board to have been targeted by any removal except for maybe that first Swords when he jumped ahead. Sean was the threat for like 90% of that game based on the pieces he kept advancing his board with each turn.
