Elsie Maynard (Laureen Livingstone) and Jack Point (Tommy Steele) entertain the public with their lovely duet "The Merryman and His Maid" ("I Have a Song to Sing, O!"). Scene from "The Yeomen of the Guard" (Gilbert-Sullivan)

Indeed. For those who haven't seen it, the first time it's sung is as a crowd pleaser. Only in the finale is it a sad song.

Many popular actors etc have taken a roll in G&S operas and failed to fit in,but Tommy Steele here does as well as if he was born to it.Excellent performance.

That's Laureen singing . She had a distinguished career in opera. I heard both these performers in these roles live at the Tower of London. It was a great show.

@TheLastYogurt Interesting observation, and musically I'd completely agree. Tommy Steele's rendition is halting, but that is in the spirit of Jack's character, surely? Objectively Laureen's voice is too good alongside his, but perhaps that is the point, or should I say "Point"

@cuddlyable3 In all likelihood, it probably is her voice. This was obviously meant to be more "filmy" than "stagey" so they probably shot it using playback.

I agree. But comparing him to the great John Reed was just not fair. Still, I second the man who asked for the finale of this version.

i remember this production very well. Tommy Steele acted this well but I'm not so sure about his voice

@jonathanbirchley Hmm. Not sure about that opinion at all. Laureen's talent totally eclipses Tommy's, embarrassingly so. I can't imagine the late John Reed being so upstaged and his own Yeoman of the Guard is much crisper and more dominant than Thomas' effort. It is generally regarded as one of the greatest recordings of this opera. Him and Laureen together? Wow!

I actually liked Joel Gray's performance more.

+william redfern If you don't like G&S why did you watch this. These operas have been going for over a century because people enjoy them so much.Gilbert was a master of using the language to paint a picture and tell a story, and Sullivan was a doctor of music who wrote many well known pieces of music including the hymn,"Onward Christian Soldiers". These operas will continue to be loved for many years yet by those who can appreciate them. They were both knighted by Queen Victoria for their efforts.
