My Mom attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin with both Al Jarreau and Harrison Ford. Al excelled in music. Harrison excelled in acting. My Mom excelled in tax law. That's why you've only heard of two out of those three.

My favorite artist of all time who embodied music. Can't imagine him doing anything else. Saw him in concert many times and each concert was an adventure because you never knew what he'd do. I remember the day he died because it was my birthday. I'll always have the gift of his music. ♥️

What you've witnessed is not a freak but a wonder. The wonderful Mr. Al Jarreau was nothing short of remarkable. He was classically trained vocally and played several instruments as well. I had the pleasure of seeing him live a couple of times. The man was pure energy. Watching him you'd feel so alive, as if you were on an adventure! You couldn't look away or you'd surely miss something!

My husband took us on our first date to see Al. His opening act was Chama Kahn. Seriously, how can it get any better? After 34 years of marriage, we saw him every single time he came to Vegas. We saw him about 10 times, no show was the same. But every show was a unique one. I actually bawled all day the day he died. There is no singer who can hold a candle to his love of music, replicating instruments, scatting, etc. Al Jarreau is our song. Every single song he performed was a magical experience. There is no one today, or even in the future, who can truly make you a part of his music, his stories, his life. There are no words to describe my love of Al Jarreau. People ask if you could only listen to one artist for the rest of your life. Hands down. The Late Great Mr. AL Jarreau. P.S. You can vacuum your home in 1/3rd of the time, listening to this song. Just saying 😊 An amazing human being, husband, father, musician, and truly a gift to us all. My deepest gratitude for listening to the late great Mr. Al Jarreau. This absolutely made my crappy day completely turn around. Thank you for your reaction, for knowing who this incredible artist was, and the influence his magical talents gave the world.

The original recording of TAKE FIVE was released as an instrumental jazz piece for a quartet in 1959. This is from Wikipedia: The piece has been a staple of jazz and pop music since it was released, and has been covered many times, in a variety of genres. The first known cover was by Carmen McRae on the 1961 live album Take Five Live,[m] supported by Brubeck, Gene Wright and Morello.[45][46] For the recording, McRae sang lyrics written by Brubeck's wife Iola; these lyrics would later be used for other vocal recordings.

In the summer of 1976 I was living next door to a dude who was the booking agent for a new club in Boulder called The Blue Note. Craig Webb had also been BB King's road manager for a spell and was deeply connected in the music business. His cousin Marvin Graves aka Henchi was co-leader of the Freddi-Henchi Band, a legendary Colorado Front Range funk and dance band. The parties were amazing and Henchi and I became lifelong friends over the years until he passed in 2012. But when I first moved into that house, Craig used to come over every night as soon as we fired up our grill with a fat spliff of Gold Columbian and he would throw his steak on the grill while he smoked us out. One night he said he had booked this guy at the Blue Note and we should come to see him. "I'll leave your names on the guest list at the door. You never seen nothin' like him." was all he said. We arrived early and sat at the very front table as Al Jarreau blew our minds. He told the audience he had signed a recording contract with a new label for his second album coming out later that year, Glow, that it was going to be big, and he might not be able to play these kinds of venues forever but he would never forget these audiences. He instantly became my favorite artist and I saw him countless times in clubs over then next year or so before he really hit it big in the states. I continued to see him in bigger theaters over the years. The last time I saw him was about ten or twelve years ago at Red Rocks outside of Denver in Mayor Wellington Webb's (no relation to Craig) Jazz Festival with BB KIng. He hadn't changed a bit. So sad when he passed so young. RIP Al Jarreau and RIP Henchi. Two of the sweetest voices and kindest people I've ever met.

I was a kid in the 60's when this song was in the super market or when I get a haircut, so it's precious to me. I love Brubeck, so much so if someone said to me a guy is skating words to it, I will be like George Carlin, "Get the blank outta here!" But if someone said Al Jarreau is doing it, I'd run to the record store to buy it. HarriBest has good reactions and is passionate about good music.

One of the first jazz pieces i was exposed to at a fairly young age was Dave Brubeck's TAKE FIVE. A favorite of mine, still. It was notable for it's time signatue, that 5/4 thing. But i'm quite certain that i have heard a cover of the tune (released originally as a quartet instrumental) with an added lyrical vocal prior to AJ's performance.

The original Take Five, by the Dave Brubeck Five in 1958 is really worth a listen. I discovered it much, much later than that and still go back to it periodically. You owe it to yourself Harri to just give it a listen. BTW, it is an instrumental only, done by a Jazz quartet.

WOW! I'm really surprised Harri that you haven't done a reaction/tribute to Olivia Newton John. She was a music icon! Had a music career that spanned 50+ years, sold over 100 million records worldwide. won several Granmys and starred in one of the greatest musicals of our time and had numerous hit songs. She was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979. She recently passed away on Aug 8, 2022 after a 30 year battle with breast cancer.
