It seems like a lot of the time it's because the information gets to Matt or his crew secondhand, so the person they are in contact with is just guessing on behalf of their friend who is stuck. That's why some off-road recovery guys carry all of their gear all the time for unforseen situations like this, but Matt does the majority of his work in deep sand, so he needs to stay light.

Props to Matt for always keeping his cool when he gets bad info. You can tell he was not feeling it on that night recovery but still didn't blow up on them. I've been a dealership technician for nearly 20 years. Needless to say, I've seen my fare share of tow truck drivers. These guys take it to another level and they are dam good at what they do. That being said. That cheap piece of plastic they were worried about breaking, on that 212 chassis E Class Mercedes-Benz, is less than $100. Plus they chose a strong point, the right rear lower control arm, for a spot to make that pull. Like I said earlier, "These guys and girls make it look easy."

Have to agree completely! When I was working I got the big problems as senior tech and it was always the things that a customer or other tech didn't tell us about the problem that was the fly in the ointment. Suddenly something that seemed simple to fix became very complicated. If we had been told everything from the start it would have helped a lot. It was always the "by the way" that happened in the middle that was the big problem, LOL

The Challenger was an expensive car when it was new, but if it's older it could be a $5000 car or less. That doesn't make it right, but when I was a kid I drove my cars in some dumb places. The guy with the Benz is the real head-scratcher, he had California tags, so he's at least 500 miles from home and he's four-wheeling in an expensive car and he's old enough to know better. I actually used to keep a come-along in the trunk of my Road Runner, that's why I feel for the Challenger guy, but I never had to call for help, I always got myself unstuck.

I believe this installment featured a couple of recoveries that were possibly slightly revealing (unintentionally) of how frustrating and taxing Matt’s job can be on a day-to-day basis. Matt and his crews spend many hours on the road just going to and from recoveries. And then when they have to actually turn around and go get a different vehicle or a trailer??Particularly at night or during inclement weather - because of something like this? I just can’t even imagine the level of frustration and weariness adding a whole additional several hours trip to the job….🤦🏻‍♂️. Maybe those are times when (for some tow company owners) it’s good to be the business owner and are able to just quit and go home lol. Can’t see Matt doing that although wouldn’t blame him if he ever had to. There’s certainly can be weather safety scenarios, where that may be absolutely necessary. In which case, Matt’s would probably load his crew and the customers up and take them all to the nearest town for dinner and put them all up in the hotel overnight…

Good tip: If there no coolant in the engine the coolant temp sensor will read very inaccurate. depending on the location, it may be reading "steam" temperature or it could read very low from lack of steam/any flow at all. there's been many factory sensor locations that read both ways over the years. the older iron engines with gauge/warning light sensor threaded into the head was great. up on the intake manifold is bad, worse is them being off the engine on a multi-hole tee in the heater hose feeding heater core (yes, I'm pointing at you ford with the very popular 3.0L of the past)

@@Beary98 No problem. Years ago, I was driving my first little shitty car, and it burnt a piston, which led to a coolant loss. The temperature reading would go up and then start coming down when the coolant level was too low. Amazing work as always and thank you for sharing your exploits with the world! Your pintle strap routing is interesting and I can see how it would really promote overall safety for your customers. I do quite a lot of volunteer vehicle recovery for Gambler 500 and off road groups in TX and OK and I'm interested in learning more about this method, as an alternative using the recovery points on my custom swing out bumper. Any idea of the stress levels? Any thoughts on a stock FZJ80 TLC/LX450 rear axle assembly? I have very high strength tree straps and kinetic ropes, along with a heavy duty pintle hitch, but I'm concerned about damaging the tow rig.

@josiahdegroot5341
@josiahdegroot5341 Жыл бұрын
I would think about where the forces are and what stresses are being put on the other things. If you think about it the rope is pulling backwards on the diff very similarly to how it would if you just had a soft shacks around it. So the stress is on the housing itself which then puts stress on the diff mounts. Which ever force is weaker: the vehicle being towed , the diff, or the mounts is what will break first. I notice that Matt isn’t using it so much to recover, but to tow, so I think there is not as much stress on the components as if you were doing bumps, or a full recovery.

Got back to my truck loaded up and they had not made it out of the woods. I gave them a call back and found the Truck coming out over the mountain with the 4x4 and lost four wheel drive and was now stuck on the other side of the mountains. We drove them from California to Vegas. Along the way we stopped in the desert to get some footage of the Durango & Wrangler in the sand. The Challengers' power and traction control in combination with the fat tires made it do surprisingly well in sand. For those with jeep going into water area, should you have a way to get tailpipe in the air reducing water into engine. How much air in the tire vs. conditions entering.
