Alright, I’ve gotten enough comments about this: I know Origins Batman is played by Roger Craig Smith, not Kevin Conroy. I’m an idiot, but I’m not that stupid. I put it there to show the difference in intensity the two were giving in their deliveries. Smith was gruff and incredibly aggressive, like Conroy’s Batman in the first 2 games. So I used it to show how different Batman was in every game except Knight, where he was very monotone for most of the game. And of course to just give Smith more credit for being a fantastic and incredibly under appreciated Batman. So you can stop commenting that now, I’m well aware of what I did!

Hi there. I would like to disagree with you on the video when you said the reasons Batman doesn't want to k*ll is because he thinks they can be reformed. I don't believe that is the reason. In Batman: Arkham Asylum Batman has a talk with Dr. Young. She said that Quincy Sharp was trying to cure the Joker. (You know, reform him). Batman then says that would hurt his campaign for mayor. If Batman truly believes all criminals could be reformed. He wouldn't have said that. I think the real reason he doesn't kill is because he is afraid that if he does, he will go too far. The series supports this. Every person who started with noble intentions uses extreme methods like killing. They go too far and become criminals, if not evil. Harvey Dent Two-Face, Hugo Strange, Ra's al Ghul, and Jason Todd Arkham Knight. They all had noble intentions but have gone too far and lost prospective. Becoming evil themselves or doing evil things. And it all started when they decided to kill. Just like Superman, Batman puts limits on himself so he doesn't go too far. He doesn't lose perspective. He saw what happens to police in origin who take the easy way out. They become corrupted. That's why Gordon says after Batman beats the Joker at the end of Origins. "Any of my guys would have killed him." Batman says,"This city deserves better than that. " That Batman won't take the easy way out and become corrupted like them.

I’m so glad you bring up your point in 7:40. First playing the game, I couldn’t help but notice that Batman sounds exhausted a lot of the time, and most people I heard would say that Conroy’s performance was wooden and lazy in this game. But like, I always felt like Batman was intended to sound like this. For a long while, his heart actually isn’t in what he’s doing. Batman is just…done. He’s worn down and depressed, of course he isn’t going to sound the same.

You can see it in Arkham City: Harley Quinn's Revenge, too. I remember when I first played it, I thought that Batman sounded like he was broken on the inside. Like he had lost something, or someone, important to him. He sounds nothing like how he sounded throughout Arkham City, and it shows.

It pisses me off that the scene in the elevator is just rubbed off as a flaw by some because "BUtttt BatMan, U diDnt aKTuaLly kIlL tHE JoKer". Yes, everyone knows that, hell Alfred, Barbra, Robin, Nightwing and Gordon probably kept trying to console Bruce after City and tell him that it was Jokers own fault for his death. But the brain does a pretty damn good job on making you blame yourself for bad situations, even when everything points to it not being your fault. When I was bullied in school and nothing was done to stop me from being bullied I constantly blamed myself for nothing being done, even though I did literally everything I was told to do when I was getting harrassed. I had to get constantly reminded by my mom that it was the fault of the shite faculty for doing nothing, not me for being a victim of bullies. Now imagine instead of just an autistic kid being bullied for a few years it's instead an adult who is a decade in on fighting super criminals that constantly destroy what little sanity he has left, nearly breaking his one code of no killing and practically gaslighting himself into thinking he broke that code. It basically comes from a place of privilege or lack of self awareness to think that scene isn't fucking masterful in its depiction of blaming oneself for something they didn't do.

Another great thing about this video is when he makes a point about Batman not killing and would rather rehabilitate these people. Joker knowing this in the first arkham game, easily takes over arkham. It’s only until city when Batman comes to his senses and realizes that even the most twisted minds like the jokers mind can’t be fixed, which is a killers mind. That’s why he said that Batman can’t live with himself in Arkham Knight, because Batman has a mind of a killer, and there’s no fixing Batman’s mind after being traumatized by his parents death, being infected with jokers blood. That’s why Batman says that he’s fine dying if joker dies with him.
@senthesanguinesinner9

One thing I’d love to bring up is that the Joker in Batman’s head could only know things Batman knows. The disease making him more like Joker isn’t a full on conscience transfer. It just makes them act like a Joker version of themselves. Like when Harry is talking about evolution, because he’s a professor. So why is the Joker in Batman’s head the most accurate? Simple. Batman knew the Joker better than anyone. So it stands to reason that not only is Joker truly the opposite of Batman, but also that every twisted thing Joker says is a comedic version of a thought Batman himself has thought.
@moviehermit5631

And Batman sounding more tired started in the Arkham City DLC Harley Quinn’s revenge. He’s been feeling guilty the moment Joker died and he can’t let go of it. Joker’s death might have been why the Kightfall protocol was made, so Batman can either start fresh or put Batman away because his heart isn’t in it anymore, trusting his family to handle things without him

I absolutely love this video! I feel like a lot of people misunderstand a lot of aspects in Arkham Knight’s writing, and think it a worse game as a result, so it’s really awesome to see such proper appreciation and analysis of what I think is the best written part of the Arkham games: Batman’s internal struggle in Knight! That final story mission in Arkham Knight is probably my favorite part of the series (not even mentioning the Batman vs Scarecrow aspect of the writing), capped off with the epic declaration of identity in his “I am Batman” speech, I just love it so much, and loved seeing you talk about it! I’ll say once again, this video was a joy to watch! It’s very well made, obviously very well thought out, and it’s a very good analysis of that scene, and the Joker’s role in Knight in general! Good stuff!

100% Many of the complaints of this story are from people spouting “pLoT hoLES” because they don’t understand the story, saying it’s underdeveloped because they don’t understand the depth, and saying it lacks emotion because they don’t pay attention to the scenes. Most of Knight’s story is a masterclass for how to craft a story

I adore Joker more in Knight over any other Arkham version because it's not Joker, it's Batman's inner monologue. It makes so many of the little quips and insults Joker throws at people a little darker. Joker's mocking of Batman's close friends is actually Batman's inner thoughts coming up with morbid, sadistic jokes to make at them. Batman insults and taunts himself and his closest friends within his own mind, and can't stop it. It's so good.

I love how you included Origins it is my favorite and it shows how even a young angry Batman will not kill but an older depressed Batman will in Harley Quinn’s revenge he still doesn’t kill but I think he is at the end where he believes Harley killed Tim and it is even more likely because he thought Tim died the same way he lost Jason to a mad psychopath who will cross any line but when Tim turns out to be alive Bruce leaves to stop the urge to end Harley which is why he wanted to kill Henry so much because if he killed Harley none of this would have happened leading him to believe he killed the other Jokers and that he will kill again and that he needs to do he locks up Tim and heads out then Tim is captured which is his fault again he makes mistakes that always lead to others getting hurt like Talia, Strange and Jason which is what ultimately causes him to let the fear gas in and he thinks it over which is why the Joker in the final nightmare gets to kill Bruce has no courage and he needs courage to fight his demon which is why he only shows up late in the fight and why he takes the form of stone he freezes when eyes are on him because he isn’t sure what he is but when he gets the courage and realizes that leaving his work to the Joker in his mind is a bad idea he needs to fight but he can’t do it forever

He doesn’t believe all people can be reformed, thats been made clear by the way he’s talked about characters like joker and killer croc before. He doesn’t kill because he’s afraid of losing himself, if he steps slightly over the cliff he might lose control and fall all the way down. That every street punk who tries to mug a family like his will become his murder victim. that’s why batman possibly killing someone under the influence of the fear gas makes sense, because he’s AFRAID to kill.

What makes this all even better is that not only did joker bring himself to his own demise in city, he did it in knight. We see constantly throughout the story joker trying to take control and using the fear gas weakening batman as his opening. At the end in the asylum, Scarecrow hits batman with more toxin and it finally breaks batman and causes his greatest fear to come to life: his sanity was lost and joker won, to which we see joker now strapped down. Joker now thinks he's won and laughs at crane, causing him to hit who he thinks is batman with even more toxin. Yet in actually, he dosed joker. It's then that batman preys on joker's deepest fears of being forgotten to take back control of his body and win this mental battle against joker once and for all.

What you just described is, by far, the best story aspect of Arkham Knight, and perhaps of the entire series. It is telling that he locks Joker away, rather than killing it in his mind. When Joker tries to prove him and Batman are the same, we think that is ridiculous, but Bruce knows better. He knows Joker sees what he is capable of. It is always there, and has always been there. Joker's blood, combined with fear toxin, simply drew it out of him, but he locks it back up, where it belongs, because Batman's greatest achievement is not saving Gotham, but saving himself.

Honestly, there is something else I’ve honestly thought from that scene. “But now I’m on the inside, we both know the truth.” What if, when Batman had the cure at the very end of Arkham City, he wasn’t gonna give the cure? Even for a moment, maybe 2 or 3, he actually is thinking he’s not gonna give it to Joker. He’s gonna let him die, to save countless others from death. Then joker Stabs him, the vial shatters, and all the rest happens. But Batman almost killed, even by inaction. He almost let another person die, even if it was the joker. And those moments haunt Bruce, because if the joker wouldn’t have stabbed him, Batman may have killed a man. And that haunts him, because if he almost killed once, whose to say he won’t go through with it another time?

Funny fact, when they killed joker off in Arkham city, I really thought they made a mistake. I thought to myself "both Batman and Joker are what makes the Arkham games worth playing. How are they gonna have another game without Batman's arch nemesis in it?" I really thought it was a dumb mistake and didn't know why they killed joker off, but then the masterpiece that is Arkham knight came along and surprised me by having Joker be INSIDE batman's mind. Holy....crap! What a great way to not only bring our beloved, psychotic clown back, but also it's a great new challenge for our dear dark knight. It gets you asking the question "how will Batman defeat joker this time now that he's literally a part of him?" I love the idea of joker being inside Batmans mind and slowly taking over. It's very joker like and the way rock steady told the story in Arkham knight was nothing short of brilliant. Plus I just love having Joker literally along for the ride with me while I beat up thugs on Gotham's streets, it's always so nice to see joker just casually chilling on a rooftop and he'll start talking to Batman. I love that so much, so yeah I was wrong, rock steady did not make a mistake by killing off joker in Arkham city, they just had something much better in store for both Batman and Joker. A real ace up their sleeve, and they played it well. Yeah Arkham knight will always be my personal favorite game in the Arkham franchise. The story, graphics, gameplay, characters, character designs, voice acting, the missions, the batmobile, it's all SO GOOD!!!! I admit, it's not a perfect game by any means but I love it so much and it's the one Arkham game I kept replaying the most and played it all the way through countless times.

good to see people appreciate Arkham Knight even more, i really loved these mind sequences it really added layers to the story, the main story maybe be very generic/stale but this part and the ending makes the game SO GOOD

That comment at 5:40-5:51 reminded me strongly of the killing joke that For those who don’t know if you do skip this That there are to men in prison and they decide to break out so they get to the roof one jumps across to freedom then turns around and tells him to jump and the other guy says he’ll fall so the other guy pulls out a flashlight and shins it over the gap and tells him if he walks across it he’ll make it The other guy says no way you’ll turn it off when I’m half way across.-joker end quote to Batman

Notice how Joker's face tends to look better as this game progresses. When In Ace Chemicals his face is all red and banged up, showing that he is not strong enough to take over Batman's body yet. On Stagg's airships, his face looks better but still red, showing he is only strong enough to take control of Batman's body for a limted amount of time. By the end of the game, His face is completely healed suggesting that he is fully ready to take over the body of Batman

Going off the point about how Batman sounds detached and not really into what he's doing during the events of Knight and it most likely being intentional for the story, I remember an interview where Kevin Conroy said that Knight was his favorite of the 3 Arkham games he voice acted for. And I wonder if the fact that he was playing Batman in a way he hadn't before is part of that. Most of the time, he's played a version of Batman that's generally the same as he did in the animated series, and outside of some scenes in Batman Beyond we didn't see him play such a dejected and almost emotionless version of the character. Both versions felt they were just so done with it all, but their reasons are different. In Beyond, Bruce *almost* broke his rule of no killing, even brandishing a gun to save himself from a random thug and that's what made him retire. In Knight, he actually believes he *has* broken his rule with Joker being dead and feeling like he could have done more to save him, and couple that with his mind slowly being taken over by not just Joker, but his own inner darkness that made him and Joker two sides of the same coin in the first place. It's no wonder Batman started losing himself.

So from what I understand now, *Batman’s feelings but mostly his violent tendencies + his knowledge and memories of Joker = his Joker personality, which is a near-perfect copy of the original’s.* Batman knows the Joker better than anyone. His knowledge and memories of Joker resulted in his Joker personality being a near-perfect copy of the original's while also adding on his own feelings and violent tendencies, which he always has restrained. Each of the infected take on a specific trait(s) of the Joker's personality while also adding on their own traits like with Henry having the ruthless, manipulative, and calculating traits of the Joker but still saying these scientific things related to his background of being a biology teacher. That’s possibly why Batman’s Joker personality is always tied to his feelings and violent tendencies throughout the events of Arkham Knight. These personal non-Joker-inherited traits may even be boosted by the infection as Henry’s biology teacher background resulted in him believing in survival of the fittest after becoming a Joker. The Joker Infection must’ve also boosted Batman's violent tendencies as a side-effect which is where these killing scenarios in Batman’s mind came from. The Joker Infection, combined with the fear toxin, was gradually stripping Batman of his restraints and then the "Batman Who Laughs" in this universe would've called himself the Joker and bring out Bruce's violent tendencies in the form of mass violence and destruction. I think.

I prefer Knight's faster structure, City was way too slow for me to worry about Bruce's poisoning Also people love to bitch about Joker stealing Knight, but his appearence in Knight is absolutely integral to the plot, whereas in City he does steal the plot since he has nothing to do with Protocol 10

Another detail I've come to realize is that when in the Stagg airship / when facing Scarecrow and Joker interferes with Batman's mission, he's noticeably taken aback. On top of this, when Joker takes over Batman as a whole when facing Scarecrow on the airship and in the Asylum, Scarecrow is hearing what Joker is saying through Batman's voice, which is why Crane isn't super thrown off by what he's saying so much as what he was doing. Sure when he got hit by the fear toxin he lost control, but not for the reason Crane thought, not because he was experiencing his greatest fear, but because he was *becoming* his greatest fear.

I still don’t get why Joker murdered Killer Croc in that one scene where he kills all the criminals with the Joker-Mobile and then the gun. I get Penguin and Two-Face since they’re his rivals in Arkham City. Riddler is kinda random since he doesn’t do much to Joker directly but considering he had spies in Joker’s gang it makes sense Joker would wanna kill him. But Croc? Why Croc? He used Croc as a weapon in Asylum and Croc never really did anything to him personally yet Joker felt the need to violently kill him by ramming him into the ground with the joker-mobile. Does anyone have an explanation for why he’d want to kill Croc?
@ClownPuncher139
@ClownPuncher139 3 жыл бұрын
I think that falls more under my explanation that Joker isn't just Joker taking over Batman. It's Batman's violent nature coming front and center. It's what he could do to criminals if his full power was unleashed and he ignored his no-kill rule. He'd absolutely kill Croc, because he's a dangerous animal. If he was in the real world, you'd want to put him down as much as any other dangerous crocodile with a taste for human flesh.

@@SplendidSuperman122 And i would completely see Joker kill Croc because he is the Joker. Just the fact he "betrayed" Harley (an ally ready for anything for him and completely in love) so many times proves that point. So Croc ? A random villain (for Joker at least) ? he could definitely kill him.

Even if it wasn't Batman, Joker would absolutely kill Croc. Considering he suggests killing Alfred, who's innocent, killing Croc is just another step to being remembered as Gotham's worst murderer.

The real problem is the Batman critics tend to forget is Joker chose evil even before he became Joker back in his small time hood days. He's not a criminal just because he's crazy. He's only the crazy Joker because of the chemicals he got dunked in, but be was always a criminal. He can not truly ever be reformed. At most he'd just be reverted to a normal hood.

another thing notice how after batman recieves the toxin joker takes over 100% because of this batman starts laughing and is not afraid like crane thinks he would be so he gives him another dose. i believe that other dose is the only reason batman was able to come back. you see the fear toxin had batman afraid of joker taking over and ultimately thats what happened but that second dose didnt affect batman it affected joker since he was in full control. that second dose allowed joker to face his fears and ironically enough his fear was not only being forgotten but also it was batman. it gave batman the ability to do the same thing that joker did and that was take over jokers mind and get back control of his body
@elijahbaker781

I think joker was more than just a hallucination of the fear toxin he was Batman’s guilty conscience over jokers death that he didn’t cause. I also think the joker is haunting Batman as some sick phantom of some sort but that’s a wild card.
