"family over everything" is so toxic. I know I've been blessed with a respectful and good family but would never assume that of everyone else. I've met charming abusive people. 1000% understandable not wanting to marry a person who doesn't respect you

"I've met charming abusive people." Holy cow, this hit me like a ton of bricks! I was pretty young when I got with my ex, and I would definitely call him a "charming abusive person." At first, I didn't realize what he was doing, then I wondered if it was culture shock (he was from a different country than I was). It was a crazy relationship in that it made me question whether or not he knew what he was even doing. When we eventually split, he was so charming and charismatic that a lot of my family members took his side.

"Family over everything" being toxic depends on the family. *Every* member of the family has to work *together* as a *unit.* One can't carry everyone. If someone starts mistreating another, the one doing the mistreating has to go because they aren't acting like family.

I've never believed in that, particularly growing up with 2 narcissistic parents. However, once my brother got incapacitated, I had to get my life together and get a job to send money to help his wife with his kids. Nobody asked me to, it just seemed the only thing to do. I've no idea why, other than, with our parents, I was always protective over him.

Sam must share the "I'm attracted to secretly crazy people" gene like his amazing father. Neither of them deserve to have to go through the ringer like that but at least Sam's fiance's mask slipped at the ceremony, he literally dodged a stadium sized bullet a minute before midnight! Joe is very lucky to not inherit said gene and to have ended up with a catch like Anna. OP has a good family unit and I hope she has no more reasons to post here even though I would very much enjoy more! Story 1: NTA Why is it those with good families can't let those without them make the decision about their own family. She's crying about being humiliated, but she betrayed Sam in a big way. She humiliated herself by going behind Sam's back. Edit after 1st update: she threatened to burn his stuff...that's not toxic at all... The fact that she blames the dad for the mom's behavior shows she feels mom's behavior wasn't that big of a deal and OPs family shouldn't cut her off for that terrible behavior. Joe is a bad ass... Edit after 2nd update: lol "waaaahhhh, you don't trust me" of course not... you betrayed me. The fact that she is using the exact same tactics mom would shows exactly what I was talking about in my other edit. She IS mom and wanted Sam to forgive mom because she didn't want him to cut her off when she began to act exactly like her. Sam should be very careful who he dates because he is attracted to those who are like his mom it seems. Final thoughts: if Daniella's dad wants money, he should look to his daughter. It was her actions that caused this and only she is responsible.

Thanks to her help and unwavering encouragement, I was able to confront my traumas and am now finally on a path in life I am somewhat happy with. We are still very close and I make sure to remind her of how much I love her every mother's day. I'm sure you know how much your own strays love you, but sometimes, it's probably nice to hear from a stranger. Thank you for being a beacon of light for these kids and an example to us all. I had a mother exactly like the OP's even to the point of her saying that I might as well be my father's girlfriend. When I was finally able to get away, I never spoke to her again. I would have people say, "But she's your mother..." like that should mean something to me. I reminded them that they couldn't understand how I felt because they didn't have a crazy selfish mother so I didn't want to hear their judgment any more. When I got older, I would just say that I was glad they couldn't understand because that meant that they never experienced what I did. Those people who did have similar experiences understood, and other people had no right to judge when they didn't experience it. That seemed to stop the judgment. My mother did whine to anyone who would listen about how bad I was treating her and that she had never done anything to me to deserve it, but I moved completely out of that orbit, so I didn't have to hear about her whining anymore. The bride in the story thought she knew better than the whole family who actually experienced the mother and didn't care what her fiance felt or thought. She turned out to be just like the mother, so the guy is lucky to have found out before he married her. He would have been in for a world of hurt (even more than he was experiencing) if he had married her.

@@carolroberts4614 I'm way late to the party here, but there are tricks and techniques you can learn that can actually make up somewhat for lack of talent. There are some good videos online and even someone like me, completely devoid of talent in drawing, can manage to produce some decent drawings. The other option is to try alternative types of art. I ended up loving calligraphy and illumination (celtic knotwork, decorated letters etc), because its much more structured and geometrically patterned than illustrative drawing or painting. There's much less freehand work involved, but it scratches that "artistic expression" itch.

These people are great at becoming the victim the moment someone calls them out on their bs or stands up for themselves. It is truly sad. Unfortunately, unlike the people in this story where this bring the family together I wasn’t so lucky but I am glad that in this experience has made then stronger.

Daniela just proved how much she is a narcissist, manipulative person just like your mother. Sam, hold your head up high. You and your siblings and your dad are awesome people. Ana, you are the hero and going after Daniela and posting what a liar she was. You rock girl. Best of luck to all of your family.

This was always my favorite Reddit stories that I always come back to. I love the sense of true family in this. I love that they all stick together and that anyone who ACTUALLY married into the family had Sam's back. Love Ana. I feel so bad for Sam. I bet he has some strange trauma from the fact that not only was he about to marry someone EXACTLY like his abusive mother, but how she acted nice the whole time (years) they were together and that he'll have such a hard time trusting people again. But, well, at least he has his sister, brother, dad and their significant others. Joe is such a good big brother, he's responsible and loyal and smart. He married the same type'a lady. I don't know these people but I always come out of it thinking I am so proud of these (non)alcoholics. And I am thankful to the dad for getting out of there and taking ALL of his kids with him. Imagine being jealous of your TODDLER daughter and say she's trying to be her daddy's wife. EW.

Their mother sounds like mine! I am so proud to be over 2 years no contact. It is 100% forever. The only thing I regret is not doing it for myself when I moved out. I did not do it till I gave birth for the same of my child. I know know I am worth being free from abusers. My mother is way worse than these brothers mom if only what they mentioned happened but they say way worse happened so we may have equally selfish evil mothers.

Story 1 I’d dare them to sue. Extortion is a crime too lmao though the judge would probably just be satisfied screeching them out for it rather than arresting and charging them.

Man, it really chaps my ass when people who didn't grow up in your family, didn't experience what you did, don't know the people concerned, come in & decide THEY know better than YOU about YOUR relationship! Fuck that noise! Nope the hell Out of any future interactions with folks who think that way! Tell them what they can do with their arrogance & superiority, & just like that, THE TRASH HAS TAKEN ITSELF OUT!

I am glad your family supports each other. The ex fiance was so wrong. You are probably right that she would have ended up like your mother. This story will get around your city and circle of friends. When it does, make certain that everyone knows the full truth. Even if they don't agree, they might at least understand. Good Luck to everyone in your family.

"You don't understand the value of family"... what the hell did she think his father and brothers are? Family! It's pretty clear that to her, "family" means "mother". THAT is the part of the family she thinks is important and everryone else in the family has to bow down to her. The exact same role that she thought she was going to take. Mother. Head of the family. She was just like the mother Sam was running away from.

I understand how these guys feel and I would cut anyone who pushed her on me from my life. These types of people believe they know your life better than you. They also know how to fix everything. They know nothing. He dodged that bullet. You can imagine how miserable she would have made him while she redid his life.

I came from a loving family but if my significant other told me that a parent was toxic and they were no contact, i wouldn't push the topic especially wouldnt bring the toxic person around my significant other behind their back. One cant force another to forgive. Also it is hard to forgive when the person is still toxic and won't acknowledge what they did wrong. It is best to stay away from the manipulations of that person. OP you and your siblings did the right thing by saving your sibling from his ex. He is luck to have such supportice siblings, family, friends and relatives. Hope he is able to heal from this trauma. And find an honest woman that he can trust.

Between this story and yesterday’s story and some of my own experiences through some friends I gotta say that pathological liars are officially some of my least favorite people. And I can’t believe the audacity of this mom tricking her kids into missing their stepmoms funeral so she could celebrate the death of this woman she psychotically hated THE AUDACITY!! Honestly I’d say I was surprised that they didn’t cut her off sooner but with how many people are involved I don’t think it’s easy to go completely no contact. As for Daniela she also is the worst. Same reasons as the mom. Trying to force and abuse Sam into getting back with a person who honestly doesn’t deserve it anymore and lying just like the mom has and trying to make Sam look like a monster. The mother and Daniela are way bigger monsters than Sam ever could be even if what Daniela said was true. That’s an insult to monsters but I can’t think of a better word to use lol.
