Going through this experience was life-changing, but not in the way I thought it would be at the beginning of the week. Most important lesson I've learnt during the time leading up to life in university was to be comfortable with silence, and that genuine friendships take time to form. Never ask questions for the sake of asking to fill up silence. The key you need to realize here Steven is that awkward folk tend to make very good friends with other awkward folk. It's just difficult to find them for obvious reasons... Now a lot of people think of me as extremely confident and I am, but it was not simple getting here and it took me many years. I think that why I always tend to feel attracted to awkward people because I understand their situation. I used to think (and I think I do that even now) the same. I used to challenge myself to talking to more people so I could make more friends, because I thought negative about my social skills , but now I don't really do those challenges anymore. I lost motivation or smth even tho i know I want to make more friends. Probably I have evolved but I don't realize that, or there aren't that many situations?...

Start with taking yourself out to lunch or dinner. If you drive,bike or walk only have to talk to waiter if take Uber or taxi will have to do little bit of talking.

+EpicBunty lol i had the most awkward friend always say "it's not awkward unless you make it awkward" but he was home schooled and wasn't really good about social cues. anyways just thought i'd say that some people are just naturally awkward, you can go on fine but you'll have a few to many bumps on the road to finding friends who can understand you. also to put my friend's awkwardness in perspective, he would always talk over everyone else and interrupt people mid story/sentence. also he wasn't able to make eye contact or ever completely relay what he wanted to say. to strangers, people would ask why he's douchey or something along those lines and i just have to explain his personality.

Naomi Z yup that's true, mindset affects everything but if it doesn't translate to actual change in perceivable behavior then it means nothing. steven here didn't see any benefits until he actually started talking and engaging acquaintances and strangers. my friend has been advised by mutual friends, even one from childhood, that interrupting new people we meet and hang out with isn't the most socially nice thing. he doesn't change his behavior at all and in the end it only hurts him because it alienates more people from him who don't understand him as well as the few of us in his circle of friends that do. edit: just to clarify, we are both agreeing, i don't want this reply to come off as aggressive although i can see that it can be received as so.

I literally went through the same thing that Steven went through as a child. I thought every girl I talked to only did it out of an act of pity and I hated that so I refused to talk to them. I still have this mentality to this day and I think I should start making a change.

I was crying too much throughout this video to really concentrate on it, but I am going to have to re-watch this a few times. Steven is literally me. I can relate to every single thing he said. It is just so relieving to know i'm not the only one out there that feels this way and has such a hard time making friends and being social with people. I want to make friends SO badly, right now I don't have any and it hurts. I put so much pressure on myself that if I do actually end up talking to someone and the conversation doesn't go well, and I don't end up friends with them or whatever, I end up feeling awful and blaming myself for it. What the life coach said about how conversations are a two way street and how they end up isn't entirely on you really hit home with me. Thank you Buzzfeed for making a video on this subject.

I relate also. I have a few friends mostly from middle school and one from elementary school years at church. Making friends in high school has always been hard for me. I'm a sophomore and I'm still quiet in 2/4 of my classes. It's really hard especially when everyone pretty much already has their little friend group. I cried during this video too. I was watching and thinking how to apply these tips but I know I'm still too nervous to ever initiate conversation.
