Big Price Update on the turbo price. A few days after I put out this video Darkside reached out to inform me that the turbo would cost about double the price they had originally planned for and posted on their site. At the time of making this video, and for a few days after it came out the price was indeed $600. It is currently $1,150. I do not work for Darkside (obviously) and have nothing to do with pricing and this was a surprise to me too. They explained that there was an error when pricing out parts and production cost and it wouldn't be possible to sell them for $600 any longer. Sorry for the confusion and I'll keep everyone updated if the price changes.

It sounds like your worried about "leaning out" the afr. Don't worry about it. If a diesel runs lean it won't make power because the fuel quantity injected is less then the minimum required to run not by having too much air. Think of a clogged fuel filter situation. It won't burn pistons or damage rings. Now too much fuel and not enough air will melt pistons and valves if it's run too hot for too long. Thats why you need an egt gauge so you don't melt it down. It sounds good and looks like it will be a rocket when it's done!

A diesel engine regulates it's power output by varying the AFR via injecting more or less fuel. If you simply cramp more air inside the engine and thereby increasing the Lambda value, the diesel engine (technically) doesn't care at all. You can go full throttle no problem with that new turbocharger. Theoretically the engine should run better and cooler as there is more oxygen available to completely burn the fuel and more inert gas in the cylinder which has to be heated. If the Turbo is more efficient than your old one you can expect another increase in power as a result of the increased force pushing on the piston during the induction stroke. injection timing is critical on a diesel engine though. It's the diesel's ignition advance if you want to compare it to a gasoline engine. But as long as you don't touch it, you can go full throttle with your new turbo without caring about it running leaner ;).

Awesome comment, thanks! I've been tuning my turbo LS for long I forget this stuff.

@@LegitStreetCars That turbo should lag more until you add fuel. I would be curious to see a 0-60 time and at what rpm it starts building boost before adding more fuel; I assume the tuning box has some sort of data logger inside so you can compare boost curves etc. I am also curious as to how a larger diameter turbine wheel interacts with the vanes in the turbine housing; I would assume there is an optimal distance between the vanes and the wheel and messing with that could compromise spool. Or it might not! Hope you post some more performance data as you go along.

Loving this project! FWIW though, diesels are kind of opposite from what we are used to with turbo gasoline engines in terms of tuning. They ALWAYS run on the lean side of stoich, and the more air you add, the safer they get. It's actually when you start to add the fuel back in with the extra air that you make more and more torque (and smoke), and add stress to the engine. Too bad HP Tuners won't tune that year of Merc, it would be fun to play with. I could probably tune one on WinOLS, but that has so much pain involved it would ruin the fun, Lol. Loving the content!!

I have a 2008 S320 CDi with 7 speed V221, which was a private import to Australia (from previous owner). I would like to look into the viability of doing a similar system upgrade, however I also want it to be as efficent as it can be as well as a safe increase in power. No doubt the transmission may need to be protected by changing the valve bodies etc (I'll ask a transmission specialist). This engine is the 3.0 V6. My main aim is to make it more efficient and give reliability as well a safe power increase, hopefully without modifing the transmission at all. I had our 3.0 diesel 2007 Toyota Landcruiser modified with large increases in performance (own ECU, larger intercooler moved to the front with in and out temperature sensors, 15% extra injector flow, larger turbo, extra fuel filter, oil catch can fitted, larger stainless mandrel bend exhaust with fitting for EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensor, boost sensor and transmission sensor fitted as well as 4 gauges. Intercooler in/out both displayed on one gauge. Except for transmission the 3 gauges were pillar mounted and digital. Also have a seperate transmission cooler which currently partially covers the intercooler, this will soon be moved. Since you are increasing the fuel flow, will you also change the injectors to flow higher? What flow % increase? Will the existing injectors be modified to do this? What do you think of the DLC Diamond Like Coating process for injector nozzles? Good luck, I'm keen to learn how you got on.

@@rolf9138 the CDI's use variable vein turbos, they throw out ALOT more volume than the older IDI turbos. The intercooler is fine for bone stock, but once you crank up turbo pressures with a tune, it's not enough. Not nearly enough with a bigger turbo
@rolf91386 жыл бұрын
@@MBDieselFreak I am pretty sure you are mistaken that a GT2056V will flow more than a T3. I will take it at face value that there is a significant pressure drop on the stock IC when more air is flowing. It's a shame the engineering of mercedes 1970's and 1980's didn't persist much past the 1990s in the same level of excellence and over engineering.
@drewk67486 жыл бұрын
@@rolf9138 If you would look at the turbo compressor maps from Garrett you would realize that you are indeed incorrect here. A Garrett T3 .45 Trim (Stock OM617) flows around 23lb/min of air at 65% efficiency line. The stock turbo on the OM648 (Alex's car) Flows around 31 lb/min at the 65% efficiency line. The intercoolers biggest issues on this car isn't the lack of being able to flow the correct CFM, it is the design and cooling fin density not being as good as an aftermarket unit so it is not as efficient at lowering the temperature of the air after it is compressed. That being said, I imagine the stock intercooler on this car is far more efficient than the aluminum pipe installed on the IDI OM617 diesels.

If you put your mufflers back on, and add an exhaust cut-out in downpipe, it would be hella' sleeper!
@gedas34196 жыл бұрын
@@adaster98 No. Electronic exhaust cut-out valve. Butterfly valve and it's electronicaly controlled(like electronic throttle body) via a switch. He presses the button, valve open, gasses go straight downpipe to air. Also less exaust pressure, turbo builds up boost faster. If the valve must be opened, because of exhaust pressure, it would not have any powergains at all. It's very good for sleepers. 3 inch downpipe going through stock exhaust would really be power sucking, but at exhaust downpipe through 3inch cutout straight to ground, also if pipe is cutted level-flat it would even add scavenging. Screamer pipes are external wastegates, which have different pipe, and don't go to the same down pipe. Or internal wastegated turbo, which has downpipe with diverter and another pipe. Diesels run vgt, vnt vanes,which control the boost.

Replaced clutch switch no resolvement. Have tried another brake switch and again no change. Replaced the transducer valve solenoid, notice a loss in power but limp mode resumes. I have noticed the brake sensors for the Brake PADS are all broken. Check all pipes to and from turbo. Replaced broken pipes, turbo came back to life but limp mode resumes. The fuel level sensor is not working, needs reconnecting, could be a potential issue but not likely. Do not know how to test oil level sensor and have no idea if this will also impact the ECU to trip limp mode. Can you PLEASE PLEASE do a video on the Turbo issues causing limp mode WITHOUT a computer. thank you so much if you do. You can do a ivdeo on your old CDI cars, they are essential the same cars. I drove my E46 320d for a quarter million Km on open roads and it was a blast to drive, but once I found a job 5Km away from home, I sold it and bought an MX-5 with a 1.5l NA engine. Actually, I don't have diesels anymore, and I have four cars and one motorbike :D

You probably have a bad/loose neutral in your panel or from the power company.

Sounds like a neutral drop to me too...

I'm pretty sure that without a tune you get exactly the same amount of power and torque with a hybrid turbo, it probably just spools up faster and feels more aggressive. Reason being that the computer still controls the turbo pressure to the tune you currently have, so if the tune says 10PSI, it will make 10 PSI with both turbos, the turbo behavior is what it can't control.

Cannot wait to see the dyno run... I'm not a Merc guy,my heart quivers for Audi but this is really interesting,might need to broaden my horizons!

I'd kind of like to see what this level of modification could do on a 642. Delete EGR, straight pipe, turbo mods, intercooler upgrades and a tune? Profit!

You can drill and tap the manifold. We do it with TDIs all the time.

Does a larger turbo body or compound turbos upgrade exists, I have both the OM642 and OM648, and a bit more power would brings more smiles to the miles. Great videos!! I love these under served diesel cars.

We have a Lou's in Phoenix!!! The brought it in a couple years ago. Gino's also put one up out here, but they shut down in a year. I am so glad we have real Chicago deep dish pizza here.
