I've watched you "draw" (lol) for years and you prompted me to start. Your straight forward and "dry" communication style is so engaging without being too in your face. You're mother seems to be a beautiful soul and it was touching to see you speak with her. Thanks for giving me the courage to trust in a hidden talent. One day I'll share lol thank you for being brave and sharing with us.

When I was a teen I desperately wanted to go to a high school that provided art education. I was told no by my parents. One day My mum looked me in the eyes and told me that if I had a talent then they would consider it but I didn’t have any talent so they had to show me the right way. My father registered me to another high school without my knowledge. I became the most miserable and unsuccessful engineer around. I tried to do art as a hobby but I had no idea of where to start and everything I did was so horrible it only proved my parents right. I am now 40 years old and only recently I found out I just had to practice and talent wasn’t necessary. Art has always been a source pain and misery in my soul and I never even produced any art! When people sit down and talk to their parents and love their mums, it’s like watching alien movie to me. So unbelievable and beyond my comprehension. Lucky you Jono!

The alternative is my life. My parents paid for me to go to film school. I remember my mother asking me at one point “how will you make a living?” and I naively replied by writing scripts. I wasted 4 years at film school, eventually gave up writing scripts when I realized I wasn’t any good and have struggled with employment my whole life. I am now 50 years old and still living with my parents because I can’t afford not to. I have found a way to make art but it doesn’t make me money. And I am still miserable. This won’t make you feel any better I’m sure, but if you don’t spend every day thinking of ways to kill yourself like I do you’re still better off than I am.

I love the bond Jono and his Mom have. It would be wonderful to have an Artist Mom or atleast relatives. In my family, I am the only one who inherited a drawing skills from my grandfather. None of my grandfather children and grandchildren inherit the skills except me, imagine how difficult it is for me not to be able to talk about my drawings to anyone. I don't personally know other artist as well. I enjoyed this video :).

This was great! 💖 I want to share it with my children. We are a family of artists. I have always told my children to never believe the idea that you can't make money as an artist, art is in demand everywhere! The question is do you want to make money as an artist. That's the big decision because that takes hard work and putting yourself out there! The imposter syndrome is real but it's real for every artist who's not a complete narcissist. Teaching and sharing helps build confidence. So far only one of my 4 talented artists have chosen to pursue a career with their passion. I started mine at 50, when it was clear my body needed me to choose a new career. My other children are still holding their passion close to their chests. Perhaps to bloom later. Art is meant for the soul of the artist, not just the eyes of the beholder.

Oh wow! Jono, your Mom is absolutely lovely. I love my Mom to bits, she’s always been a great mom, a friend I couldn’t live without, a confident and a source of inspiration, but your mom looks so cool, chilled out and laid back. She looks kind of bohemian and I suspect your upbringing was mostly positive reinforcement rather than being told no, no, no, wrong, wrong, wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, getting to know the person behind the the pencil and seeing the real you rather than just Jono the artist. Thank you for sharing this snippet of your personal life. It was wonderful to see that your mother (parents), had such an influence and support to you becoming an artist. Having been brought up in an atmosphere where I was told that becoming an artist was not possible or that I would never achieve success, was devastating for me in my youth. I feel like my early years of aspiring to draw, sketch was like Chinese feet binding. I would never, ever be able to walk upright and would always feel crippled. The fact that your mother was so influential in your life and supporting and nurturing toward your talents, is quite the blessing. It is my hope that, parents will see this video of you and your mother conversing, and be inspired to support their children in their endeavors to pursue a life as an artist. Not demanding they seek a life as a lawyer, doctor, etc. Truly inspiring. I very much enjoy your artwork and look forward to following your work in the future.

If you’re open to it, I think it’s a great thing to understand your parents as people and not just as parents. I loved it!

What an amazing interview, Jono & Mrs. Dry! I didn't contribute to the questions, so they were news to me, but good ones. My fave parts were when she tried to give her opinion and suggest, rather than teach you how to draw; that your fave piece was actually her least favorite and why; your differing perspectives/memories on your art education; and how she is a multimedia artist, but admits she's not the incredible drawer you are bc she doesn't focus on it and you admit you're boxed in bc of your niche. I'd like to see more interviews like this, please, Jono. Have you and your mum ever participated in a show together, either just the two of you or a group event? Lovely to meet you, Mrs. Dry! Bright blessings, all.
