Hi Jono. I am coming back to my Art after a 25 year break and at the age of 54 and find your advice and guidance really helpful. I was an illustrator for 10 years after college in the 80's but became disillusioned with art and became another lost Artist, however I'm determined now to make it work commercially and I'm now throwing all my resources to that end. I wanted to thank you for taking time to share your experiences and advice, it's inspirational. Adrian

You are so honest with yourself and others. It's a great quality of your personality. You are also a great artist, very thorough. Thanks for sharing. You made me realize that we all should go back and take a look at our work. By doing this, we can also learn how much we have changed through the years. Our thoughts, our actions and desires change as we progress in our personalities. Smart move. I wish you more success in your career. If your concept of success is like mine, it's the work improvement that really matters, what message we want to send to the world with our work matters more than financial wealth. I am going to try to send this message to the world before I leave it. I am old now, and not feeling very well, but will keep trying until my final moment.

I love your style. Your eye of detail is crazy deep and your art style accentuates it perfectly. But, there's one thing I would love to know: what are your guidelines for balancing the focus of the composition with a high level of detail? I struggle with maintaining a balance between the focus points of the composition and the amount of detail they should have. All too often, I overdo the details on the nonprimary focus points and it ends up either detracting from the overall work or it just feels muddy or too busy. I feel like I have good concepts but the drive to add high amount of detail ends up ruining it. Any suggestions?

That's a very interesting snapshot of the younger you. I sense that back then, you were confused, trying to find your place, trying to prove yourself, but at the same time very defiant (as most teens do). You had a strong sense of self, to the point of even being arrogant when you were dealing with your subject matter of strength, though it was a much more subdued and internal arrogance. Outwardly, you were still a nice guy and still tried to be agreeable...however, it was a constant source of internal conflict for you. In fact, the vast majority of your conflicts were internal, with them bursting out only after they'd been bubbling and stewing for so long. You've grown a lot since then, which is a good thing. You're more mellow, more forgiving, though no less a perfectionist. And you've learned to see more of the world outside of you, instead of just focusing on the world inside of you. However...you're still fearful to let the outside world in. KZbin is kind of like therapy in that regard, but in personal relationships, the door still has a very complex combination lock. lol. Keep doing what you're doing, bud. You're doing great.

Great artists don't strive for originality. Originality is the subject of the work, not the work itself. Great artists seek the most inscrutable aspects of existence and then confer them in simplicity. It is like daring to speak the real name of God out loud, or being a hero who brings back the great secret of life. That hero discovers it has no translation into the common tongue. Always after, their is the taste of ash in their mouth, and the adrenaline of transcendental ecstasy pumping in their veins. They babble, and are more like angels, than people. All of my heroes art artists, composers, scientists, and anyone who has lived for the experience of seeking meaning. You are part of that family of thrill seekers, to me, sir.

What helped me with my art journey was self critiquing, I would take some time off while drawing, come back and make a list of things I should've done differently to encourage experimentation. Ann reardon from how to cook that made chocolate models the same way and they were quite realistic.
