I remember being so excited about Astride, it was my favourite game being developed during the big horse game boom. I loved the concept and the graphics, I was so hungry for updates you'd think I never saw a horse game in my life! My scepticism began when I noticed how many new horse models they were showcasing, they barely had functioning tack yet sooooo many breeds being shown. I began to feel like it would just turn into sso all over again, pretty game with pretty ponies but...what else? I'm hoping they manage to kick development into gear and keep up with the rest of the current games. I understand that this kind of stuff takes time, sure, but when a singular person is making more progress than a team of six in (roughly) the same time I begin to have issues. Anywho yap over, new video! Yippee! Edit: After watching deeper into the video, my third paragraph is dumb now 🥲 I do understand the situation more now, they did also back themselves into a corner by showing off everything to their audience. As you said, it makes it harder to change parts of a game when your audience has fed into the first idea instead of the second. I've decided to keep the third paragraph since it proves how people can think as I did about the topic without knowing the extent of the issue (does that make sense? I hope it makes sense).

I'd prefer Astride post poning the full release to 2028-30 rather than downgrading more features when trying to push to the 2027. Better wait and do well rather than rush.

The risk is their game will be outdated by then, what I mean is there’ll be so many other horse games already released and established in another 3-5 years Astride won’t have anything new and exciting to offer anymore to the market 🤷🏽‍♀️
@Firebrace
@Firebrace 4 күн бұрын
@sirenserenades But the real question, how many of those will be *good* horse games. A good game will be noticed and enjoyed regardless of initial market. A bad game will be forgotten. Especially with this niche market. This particular company already also has an initial funding and interest, if it is a good game then those people will go out and tell people about it. If not, then people will tell others it is either mediocre or bad if they feel it is.

@sirenserenades So far I don't see any competitors to them, other games are just cartoonish or mobile games. But ofc the patience is not that common trait nowadays so the risk of being forgotten is still real unfortunately. Hopefully that won't happen and they could prove people otherwise.

@Firebrace Currently i feel that people whine about Astride way too much and way too early only cos horse gamers have bad experiences from many flops. I'd wait for 2 more years until would start to evaluate how it's gonna do. But then again, I'm the kind of player who finds games usually much later of the hype anyway and i play them years if not decades if i really like them. I don't just play things through asap and move to the next game.

Im hoping the game will be what its was intended to be. but i worry with the slow pace that itll just cease to be.. keep getting polls about new horse breeds but i feel thats the least importnant thing right now

First and foremost, thank you Rattle for continuing to explore these topics and issues that help those of us who look forward to these upcoming games. I appreciate your dedication to keeping us informed and I love every video you post. :) Onto Astride: I’m sorry, but with the amount of funding they have had so far, I’m quite disappointed with the development. There is little to do with the base of the game, and a foundation should have been better established before the first kickstarter. I was a supporter back in 2022, and had high hopes of the game when I saw the trailer. The trailer feels very misleading in hindsight, especially with all the features they described and even with the trailer labeled with a disclaimer, it showed basics that are too similar to what we are just getting in updates NOW. 3 years with the amount of funding they’ve been given should be sufficient to have provided at least what we have currently back in 2022 when that kickstarter was going on. While I understand some of their points, I still much of what they’ve said I disagree with, especially that the price tag was to respect us who funded. The game highly lacks the sufficient development to live up to that price tag, and I am displeased that they think that is okay and that in the future, they would raise it even. I understand coding is hard, but again, a foundation should’ve been properly implemented before it was released into early access. I agree with many that the gameplay given back then was a tech demo at best, especially with what was shown in the trailers. In my opinion, I think that they should not have made the decision to have more artists than they have coders and focused on that foundation much more. Especially because what was promised will be much more coding heavy than with the art. A stable you can customize to your liking with shapes, many horse breeds with animation requirements, etc. I also think that the offered excuse of multiplayer is simply not enough considering that the game was to be semi multiplayer, with a single player story, experience, and while multiplayer would be useful to have since they promised that you’d be able to ride with friends and even breed with each other’s horses, it was an option they decided to promote. They could’ve made their foundation with multiplayer, worked on it as the foundation of the code and kept it from being accessible to players until it was finished as the main single player story and experience was at least started. Edit: Finished the rest of the video. In light of their responses to your final questions, I am quite upset, as many of the features they mentioned ‘dumbing down’, as it were, were the very reasons I wanted to support this project. I am especially disappointed by the vocalization of reducing the story. The simulation of it, in my opinion, should definitely not be your main priority and can be something to repair as time goes on. Animations, while not what we promised in quality, can always be reworked and repaired, but it was integral in my mind to be able to enjoy the story and gameplay itself. I bought this game to be a bonding experience for me and my sister as we grew distant, to allow us a small space to enjoy ourselves when we developed our stables and could interact together, but the game could still be played alone when we were apart.

I found the game in steam back then after purchasing Ranch of Rivershine. So having seen a horse game with the Early Acess title, i was pretty hopeful when i purchased Astride Long story short: I refunded it. This is not worth 25 Bucks whatsoever. For an Early Access to have so little to do, its downright theft to demand 25 for this. Also, at this point, i am not convinced this game will ever finish or will be something playable for me and for my best friend who was excited at first as well. Edit: I love your videos. I enjoy listening and watching while i do some work. Keep it up!

I personally haven't put money into the game yet because there is not enough in the game for me to feel the price is worth it yet but im always keeping my eyes on them and watching them pogress, I really want this game to succeed even if its not 'the best horse game'. I do like where they want to go with the game and that even after o long they are trying to put in as much as they can to this game, I dont mind if they are slow or the way they decide to make the game. I do think that adding new horses should come later and Instead focus on enviromental things to help build the world for players to explore like the forests and other biomes or even NPC to talk to or take a daily quest from.

DOTS isn't at all ready for production and someone must have scammed them into switching to it. Now they don't want to admit their mistake. There's zero reason for an indie game like Astride to even consider using DOTS, versus the tried and tested OOP that has been the (industry!!!) standard and default for literally as long as C# has existed. It's unnecessary. They're not gonna build World of Warcraft with horses. The project management has to be extremely incompetent or gullible to fall for what is evidently just a black of hole of wasted money and time. Also really weak excuses for why they changed their graphics style, it's simply not true that the Unity asset store doesn't have all the stylized environment assets one could possibly dream of. Obviously the graphics don't matter at this point because they don't even have a core gameplay loop ready yet so idk why they're even making this such a large part of their development at this stage. I'm extremely tired of early access games that are already working on their third graphical overhaul before they've even coded the first NPC. I just feel bad for all the kids who aren't old enough to understand that they won't ever get an actual game out of this and that whatever money they may have spent on it is completely wasted. It's not the first """game""" that ended up this way. EDIT: Forgot to add, their horse creator is NOT impressive. I'm sorry. I literally was able to recreate it in Unity in the span of a single day. Having a simple material texture swap is beginner stuff. EDIT2: It really doesn't matter if they're passionate about what they're trying to make, or if they're not trying to actively scam people...if they're functionally indistinguishable from a scam, it's not worth spending time or money on.

@littlehufflepuff9790
@littlehufflepuff9790 4 күн бұрын
@simonfreys I wouldn't say their horse creator is not impressive. They are working the textures and shaders and everything to work together for the breeding aspects and hopefully mixmatching the breeds as well, which will be crucial part of the whole gameplay loop. Also if DOTS allows them better ways to compress the game to work on multiple setups smoothly in the future with much more content in the game, it will be huge thing for Astride when knowing that many of the horse game players may not play other heavy demanding games (ofc many are) cos many try to play games with old PCs basically suitable only for writing a Word document.

@simonfreys
@simonfreys 4 күн бұрын
@@littlehufflepuff9790 No, I stand by my point. It's only impressive to someone who hasn't gotten past the beginner tutorials for using C# with Unity. The created horses also factoring into a genetics-based breeding system is what they are PROMISING to eventually include in their game, but it's factually not something that exists yet. What's impressive about a promise? Tying the selected options into data that can be used for a breeding script is nothing special either, and unless they can show at least a tech demo of this system existing in the first place, it remains a promise and nothing more. There's also several other ways to compress and optimize a game, DOTS is not needed for this. You can make games with Unity that would run on an extremely low-spec PC, if you know how to optimize your scripts and shaders and environments. You can make mobile games with Unity that run on cheap older phones. Unity games running poorly with the default settings and unedited/unoptimized store-bought assets is not something that DOTS can fix, and it's not what DOTS is SUPPOSED to fix. I understand that all the promises of the devs sound great and people really want a game like this one to exist, but please don't just believe anything their community managers are telling you. The discord statements and interview answers are PR talk that avoids giving actual answers - either because the project leads themselves have no idea what they're paying their coders to do or because they are trying to lead people on. No matter which one of the two things it is, their project at this stage is functionally indistinguishable from a scam. Until they have anything to show that couldn't be recreated by a single novice Unity gamedev in the span of two days, their "game" is functionally nothing more than an asset showcase with some basic code slapped onto it to keep up the pretense and to entice funding that they have no actual proof of being used for anything that furthers the progress of their game.

As a person who went to university with *a couple* of the artist team members this is their first big game project since they graduated as far as I know, and I think they might have overestimated their first game. What it sounds like is that they simply don't have enough funding and programmers. So in order to solve or at least help that problem I feel like they should open up to volunteers. While volunteers aren't the most responsible and I can see how they could have a hard time trusting completely unknown people to them it would definitely help with the development of the game. Once some volunteers would actually prove to help the game and they could actually somewhat show some bigger progress that's being done on the game then they could acquire more funding meaning they could either A) Hire the volunteers or at least compansate them or B) Hire more programmers to speed up the game. While it is nice that they are working on small features and are trying their best, that simply isn't enough. To get funding from other companies or investors they need to have something to show for that. Which is something that they are just lacking in. (Sorry about the small rant!)

They are making things more complicated then it needs to be. Like roblox Horse Valley and Ranch of Rivershine. Just start with a few horses, small market for feed and horses, and a small gathering/farming system. Player like making money ingame so this will start to grab their attention. Then add and improve over time.

Honestly, I believe they scammed people. Even if they had a goal that they thought was good (developing the best game ever and whatnot), they chose to go against steam and released a broken unplayable whatever that was.. but it wasn't a game. For 25 eur. And titled it an early access. Be mindful, people may have differring definitions about what an early access is, but a platform like steam does not. They falsely advertised a product right up to the release. There should be consequences. There's a big issue with game players not being protected by these platforms. Games can just disappear into oblivion or erase themselves (OW1) and change themselves entierly without any consideration for people's money. All steam money should be refunded on this game imo because it was obtained on a scam. I don't care that we all have a common goal; wanting a horse game. Some things are just unacceptable.

I hope the best for the Astride team! Any game made in this community is a challenge within itself, but I do appreciate how they took some accountability on how the development wasn't like their trailer. The simple features will be useful when playing the game, and they have already made so much progress with their course options and small items. The community is understandably iffy with their progress. They put it up for a good amount of money in comparison to fully done games. Yes, this supports the team and continues their efforts to finish Astride, but it was also giving players a promise of a fully rendered trailer and in return, we got a game in the near beginning stages of development. Steam's early access announcement does little to warn players of how risky EA games can be, I hope for all future game releases, they give us a fully unfiltered game trailer. With that being said, development itself is a lot of times not specific. Due dates, functions, expectations, and the game itself will surely change through the adventure of Astride updating on our devices. All we can do now is just sit patiently and wait for any updates or a game release 🤍

This interview makes me really mad, and I'm a bit shocked by the positive response here. They continue to do what they've been doing for the last three years: big promises, downplaying the situation, and weaseling their way out of every critique by saying, "Yeah, it doesn't go according to plan, but don't worry, it'll be fine." Topping that off with more unrealistic promises and unwillingness to lower the steam price. (I get it, they need money because they have already squandered the entire funding-HOW? But come on, saying it's only fair to keep the price is just a way for them to hope some clueless people buy it and don't realize it's a rip-off.) What bothers me the most in this entire interview are the constant contradictions. "Don't worry, we're working on the 'game,' and you can expect a big update in 2025," and then "Uh, we're kind of only working on it part-time anymore, and by the end of 2024, we didn't even finish the roadmap things from Q2 2024." Them saying a big focus is reality and visuals and that that's the reason why it's been barely making progress, while the "game" is still ugly and clunky as hell. Now they want to downscale everything and focus on gameplay when the great visuals they promised from three years of development aren't even there. How have the programmers not had time to work on the janky transitions when visuals have been the focus? What visuals have they been working on anyway? Surely not the map, environmental assets or animations. Everything is still ugly and clunky. One of the programmers (Green Horse) did quite a few livestreams this year where he also talked about the development of the game. I didn't join every livestream, so I can only report on what he said when I was present, but every time the topics were things like first-person view, making the horses feel like in RDR2, fixing the reins, etc. Not once was gameplay, the actual game content, part of the discussion. So it's funny to me that they say the priority is gameplay now. Maybe there are big miscommunication problems between the two horse artists who seem to run this thing and the actual developers and animators who don't know much about horses? I love how you showed and praised the horse creator here. You're right; while it doesn't add anything for gameplay, it's a truly great creator that almost makes it impossible to have two identical horses. What bothers me is that with the new update(Only out for Patreons for now), they made ANOTHER horse creator. I think this is the third horse creator in the game now. And I just don't get why. They said they needed a new one now because they added breeds. Why not keep the simple horse creator for now and just add breeds into that? Sure, it might not be optimal, but again, this shouldn't even be the priority for now. No, we get an update that once again re-implements something we already have. It just feels so tiring for me at this point. How important is the horse creator anyway? Will we be able to customize every single horse we buy/breed/train in the game? Wouldn't it be more realistic to maybe customize your first-ever horse, but every other horse you buy/train is pre-created? Because if the focus is reality, wouldn't that make more sense? Ranch of Riverchance does auctions and wild horses, Fernhoof will also have a horse market, Tales of Rein Ravine has schooling horses for now. Why the hell is this horse creator such a focus that we've had three versions now? I'll stop rambling now because I could go on like this forever. I'm just sad about this honestly. It still feels like they haven't properly prioritized their tasks, and either they are in delusion about how slow progress is or they are actually much further along in the background than we know.

If the price is too high with the current state. Simply don't buy it yet and wait. It wouldn't make sence selling the game for 10€ and give players the full updates when the goal is to have much more bigger and expensive game. Otherwise they'd had to make the full release to be additional purchase what obviously none wants. Horse creator has advanced as they have promiced. And they never made new creator from scratch, they have just updated the UI whenever they needed spot for some new function, breeds etc. They have done the same for ESC menu accordingly as they should. Besides the designs and parts of coding has also been partly done by other members of the team rather than programmers, to excatly take the work load from the programmers. Everyone non-programmer has tried to learn even some tiny parts of the Unity so they can implement their stuff into the game without bothering the programmers too often. So that they could focus on more important things. What comes to livestreams, they have always been kept after work hours so I'd see it as the overwork so ofc GreenHorse has been trying to tackle smaller things on those instead of the bigger behind the scenes. Remember he cannot show everything there, code could also be their business secret they aren't allowed to share more than to small extent. You asked about visuals or what visuals have been under work. You clearly haven't been following their devlogs (which are public on Steam btw) that artists have been working on a lot of the visuals ahead, ready when their time comes to implement them into the game. Mathilde mainly has worked on the horses and has started on making the Knabstrupper as the last breed now as its coats and genes make extra work. Tirna has made the environment upgrades all the time and build the stable, Maja has been designing all of the main NPCs (you do realise they cannot make the 3D model without the 2D first) and their intern made lots of assets for their environment. Story was never meant to be the ultimate thing of this game over breeding, training and selling horses. They haven't even shared the bigger story behind the scenes yet so it's totally fine if they adjust it now in order to deliver the full game earlier. That is normal process overall. Sure they have been struggling but losing the funding is not necessarily their fault either. There is dozens of other applicants fighting for the same moneys every time. They were honestly lucky they got funding so many times in 2023. Besides "funding" doesn't mean "funding for the full game", no. It's enough for paychecks and taxes for around only some months. They have to apply fundings every time it's possible, for at least every 6 months if not more often and that preparing also takes some time away from other work. They are humans remember? Not some damn game robots to please everyone at the same second. And they have their own lives as well. Give them time, they have said this to be passion project and as we've already seen, they continue working on it even on the side of another works as well. I have faith in them even if it took some years longer. Edit. Just some typos.

I really don't understand why people were and are so upset about the Kickstarter trailer. Back then _none_ promiced the game to be in the trailer state _at the EA launch_ but vision of something it could be _finished_ . Besides the game in it's current stage has already everything we saw in the Kickstarter trailer, just made better imo so they kinda have already delivered and this is only beginning. Visuals are matter of opinion ofc but for example we have jumping, early version of dressage, great horse creator, big map and much much better animations than there were in the trailer back then. Just learn to be patient, they are pushing the game forward all the time even if they haven't gotten new fundings now this year. Edit: I'm Kickstarter backer myself. That's how i found out about Astride.
@apfelsturm
@apfelsturm 3 күн бұрын
I definitely disagree. For me, the Kickstarter trailer was the current state of the game. Because honestly, there wasn't much in it either. A nice-looking horse and rider, nice animations for the gaits, a simple jumping animation, and a nice but empty world. Everyone with no experience can throw together something like that using free assets in just a couple of days, but everything seemed well-adjusted and nicely made from scratch. It looked like a tech demo that could be greatly expanded upon when it received funding. That's also how I interpreted the note saying it's just an early look into the game, in no way a final game, because the trailer didn't show any gameplay or mechanics. Now, after three years, the state of the game is just barely at the level the trailer was. But the trailer didn't show the clunky and unfinished aspects that the actual game has: horrible transitions and clunky animations. There still is no game, no gameplay, no game loop. It isn't even fun to ride around with the janky animations; jumping isn't fun either due to the lack of any body to the jumping and horrible striding system. No, it's not just a case of people being pushy and impatient. This is a result of poor decisions after poor decisions. They chose Unity and DOTS over Unreal and OOP, which is just such a fundamental mistake. As a software developer who is interested in game development, I can't grasp this, its crazy to me. They focused early on the most mundane and unimportant things like multiplayer and horse creator. Everything they add isn't fleshed out. For example, they added nice and realistic reins recently, only to add more breeds where the reins need to be adjusted again. They had a nice horse creator only to make a completely new one with the most recent update! Why the hell is this even a focus? They are still mismanaging this thing like crazy.

@apfelsturm Kickstarter was not even the game as itself back then. It was vision of the consept for the game. Even Disney doesn't have their animations ready when making trailer lol. They had to start over again many times too. I really prefer the current horses and rider much more, but that is once again just a matter of opinion. As far as I've understood the multiplayer has to be put into the game code as early as possible cos coding it later could easily break the whole game even more or be impossible even. About the game otherwise we can agree to disagree. For my eye animaitions were much worse in the trailer, yet they were still the best for a horse game I've seen so they were the original reason i gave money for this project. Also having the striding system, i love it, I'm so done with people playing and learning norhing about real riding on the way (for example approaching too fast or too angled to the fences in order to just cut seconds). I love it, but i know not all, but they cannot please everyone anyway and it's nice they try something different, besides it's still wip obviously.

Refuse to give Astide so much as a penny. Meanwhile, I gave Ranch of Rivershine a full priced purchase and will continue to give that dev my money any chance I get. Astride has not given me a single reason to support them. I'll continue to keep an eye on it but it's a disappointment so far.

Also the genral tone of these replies gives me a bad taste in my mouth. Devs seem defensive, pissy, and superior.

@YTRattle tbf form every response we have it's always an outside force affecting them, and that development is just hard. If I remember correctly they even blamed the community for affecting the direction of the game when the first big backlash happened. That they were taking too much feedback and had to share less. They are adults and are running a company. They are selling a product. They should have a road map and stick to it with set deadlines. If you stop and fix every little thing people point out and don't care for your deadline that is a you issue. And since then, well since forever, I haven't seen them genuinely apologise and admit they are wrong without something tagged along side it. The whole not lowering the price thing is bs, the people who brought that at the kickstarter are already scammed by the misleading trailer. (you don't need to be a scammer to scam and you should have a somewhat working game before kickstarter). So they've already lost out on their money. Lowering the price now won't really make a difference tbh. The unity dots thing is ridiculous. They had funding they knew they had a deadline for buy decided to scrap their entire project for system that could not support games. Directly disregarding the funders dealine and their own road map to nuke their own project???? Yet still going full steam ahead like its okay. Its no wonder they aren't getting funding, bc they scrapped their project mid development while on a government deadline for unity dots.... Idk, they are praised for transparency but only speak up when they're caught (the kickstarter where you and to actively pay as patron to see the game was not want was advertised in posts. You had to pay to see you'd been mislead Lol) Speaking up after you're caught at launch is not honesty, it's damage control. I'm sure if people weren't upset they would have said nothing. Overall, it seems to always be the universes fault, the softwares fault, or the communities fault. Never their own choices.

« They tried » you and words😂😂😂 You said it all really. I feel they are genuine about their process, intentions and game. Still feel like a mess though😅 I don’t watch their updates anymore cause it gives me anxiety. 👀 Good luck to them, it’s a good project and I hope it will see the light cause they worked hard. I just hope they can stay focus about what THEY want to create.
