Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am taking a break from recreating real life historical failures, to create my own historical failure. I've been inspired by all the crazy ideas people have tried to bring into reality throughout history. I decided it's time to make my own version of a crazy, but somewhat plausible vehicle. Today I bring to you the One Wing Catamaran Sea Plane!

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

if it was made irl they’d probably cut off the engines way before landing on the water and somehow “seal” the intake and exhaust of the jets while in water. (not an expert just hypothesizing)
@Peekofwar
@Peekofwar 2 жыл бұрын
@@hovis_esports The problem with jet intakes, is that if you try to put some sort of mesh or filter over the intake, you seriously restrict the airflow and thus handicap the engine's performance. I'd assume the same happens if you redirect the airflow. What I'd probably do is attempt to move the engines onto the top of the aircraft instead of the bottom. Of course, in real life, you could probably deflect the exhaust by a few degrees or so to trim the thrust to compensate for any center of thrust issues to some degree. Also remember that you need enough thrust to take off especially in water, since you also have to push the front of the hull through the water which I assume is heavier and harder to move through than air.

ive created in this in stormworks where the conditions and building rules are much more real, that was an issue from the beginning, which is why i positioned the jets in the rear of the fuselages, and put the jet intakes on top of the fuselage towards the back, there is no issue landing in water and taking off from water i am happy to say! and it actually flies very nicely. It flies very quick too. (i have to account for the thrust being at the rear with a constant fin stabilization system, but it works great)

The plane takes off at around 140 mph which is slower than the usual 160 mph is this also an advantage to this amazing invention? The down side is that having 1 wing means if the wing breaks ur done, instead having 2 wings you have a small chance to be able to survive if one wing goes boom.

you realize there are 7 jets on that thing? On that thing 4 should be the max to not be wasteful. maybe just 2 for it's size and now imagine how this thing would fly with 2 or even 4 if you're generous. the problem with this is also that the roll is somewhat weak when slow, having wings on the side solves that and that plane exists already, maybe not with jets, but it exists

In 1949 when the first jet-powered aeroplane was invented, the idea of commercial seaplanes were somewhat useless. even if it was better since it has a runway almost everywhere, and if an engine failure happens landing will be much easier. Most airlines had stopped investing in seaplanes. Which resulted in the downfall of seaplanes for example the Saunders-Roe Princess seaplane.

The problem about this design is that the needed structural Integrity of the Wing so that the Airplane doesn't start to wobble while flying at high Speeds is very hard to achieve in rl. Most similar Designs in rl. have additional to the middle Wing some outer Whigs to help with the Lift, so that the middle Wing doesn't need to be as big, wich makes the needed structural Integrity much easyer to achieve.

And another problem is Scrapman put the rockets under and too close to the wing and rotating ones, thinking realistically the rockets can damage the wing.
@The_Redstone_Robot
@The_Redstone_Robot 2 жыл бұрын
couldn't you put a beam behind the wing for more structural integrity? don't know much about how planes work so I'm probably missing some reason why that wouldn't work.
@rambysophistry1220
@rambysophistry1220 2 жыл бұрын
@@The_Redstone_Robot So, the reason for the complication is that aircraft are, by their nature of being heavier then air, a balance of forces that, when everything is canceled out, results in a safe vehicle, with sufficient lift and thrust to get into the air, despite drag. That "safe vehicle" thing is hard, because there is a balance of factors. The heavier the plane, the more energy required for it to take off, the more lift required for it to oppose gravity, the more torque it needs to withstand in changes in direction. A heavy steel beam adds structural integrity, but also adds torque, so there is additional force on the aircraft, and the wing itself is made of aluminum, so isn't as structurally stable as the steel beam. This is ignoring the fact that a wing has to flex in flight, so that its lifting surface is maintained despite different vectors of force. The math involved means the entire wing has to be structurally stable, and it can't be solved by just a steel beam running behind the wing.

Twin-fuselage aircraft have existed for pretty much as long as planes have, but I'm not sure if any existed with just one wing in the middle and nothing on the outside of the fuselages. One big issue that might happen if this plane was designed in real life is that all the weight is on the outside while the lift is on the inside, which could cause massive amounts of stress throughout the aircraft construction and a tendency for the plane to simply snap in half. That's why all the twin-fuselage planes have wings on the outside too, so that there is a balance of weight and lift throughout the plane.

I'm sorry scrap community but... "As early as 1913, the Radley-England Waterplane racing flying boat demonstrated the concept at the hands of pilot Gordon England. A twin-fuselage aircraft has two main fuselages. It is distinct from the twin-boom configuration which has a single main fuselage with two subsidiary boom structures. Twin fuselages have been adopted for various reasons, and a few types have entered production. A twin-float arrangement offers stability on the water without the need for wing tip stabilising floats. Mounting the float immediately below, or integrally with, the fuselage provides a strong airframe with minimal additional weight. During and after World War I a number of such twin-fuselage floatplanes and twin-hulled flying boats were constructed, and a few entered production....." - Wikipedia. That's crazy how it was invented already so long ago and also worked.

Honestly this makes sense from a military standpoint. Large wing and pontoons so plenty of fuel and bomb space. It could easily fit 3 people, even with multiple gunners, and the large wing means it could probably fly at higher altitudes. Yeah this would have been a good proposal. The only bad part was the underslung engines sucking in all the saltwater, but that could be fixed by moving them to the top of the wing, and seaplanes have shorter engine lifespans anyways.

for dog fighting it would kinda suck because the mass is on the outside preventing barrel rolls and quick maneuvers but for a cargo plane this is perfict because it allows for double the cargo as long as the weight of the cargo is evenly distributed. as a bomber it can carry more explosives but it has a easy center target for anti air missiles. would be cool to see if each side of the plane can be made to fly individually in the event of the wings being split apart and designed to detach if one side of the plane is destroyed. maybe even going as far as turning a singular cargo plane into 2 separate dog fighting planes after the cargo is dropped

You should recreate the XP-55 Ascender! Additionally I challenge you to make it have two other versions, one with a jet design and the other of your choosing

Now I wat to see a useful plane, in the context of the game, made from this. Also, if you had had the knowledge, or the appearance there of, to make it a reality, this plane seems like a pretty solid idea.

I also actually tried inventing a plane in Trailmakers, it went horribly. So basically the idea is there are two gigantic propellers on the front (and would have been back because it was supposed to be a VTOL) and attached to these propellers are jets so it flies faster. However, when I was spawning it in to see if it would take off like a normal plane with two propellers, it just broke, completely broke. I also tried placing just the propeller, not the plane. The aftermath was a thousand sparks, horrid noises, then it just completely implodes. I will try modifying it to see if I can fix it, but I believe it is just Trailmakers being weird.

So maybe next creation staying in theme of twin body planes F-82 twin mustang? It wasn't a failure but it's interesting design. (And no. It's not the only one of this type but in scale Scrapman builds it fits the best because of it's size + there was hydroplan variant)

Your long takeoff problem can probably be fixed by moving the rear landing gear in front of the elevators. As is, the elevators are working against your pitch due to the position of your axis of rotation

This looks similar to the Savioa Marchetti S.55 and S.66 which were twin hull seaplanes. Although they had three wings instead of one.

I was watching your vid and your wings were in the front and you were going slightly upward so I thought why not just move the wings to the front to go up and move it to the back and go down (with pistons or something) and/or move one side of the wings up and down to turn (idk how wings work), just an interesting idea that I thought of, but it might be interesting

If you make it so it has a vertical wing on the outside then make it so it can go horizontal and you can put a decoupler in the middle then you got 2 f14s ready for a dog fight

so, you basically cut a one jet airplane in half* "that's a lot of damage!" like, and had the wing ends touch (and added floaters for water landing)... interesting idea ^^ (conventional planes and helis are boring, alternative wing configurations are way more fun) (*alternatively joined two airplanes and removed the outer wings) (look up the _Coupe d'Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider_ for more seaplanes and flying boats)
